Indeed, this “rough beast” is well-nigh inescapable. It can neither be evaded on the micro- level, nor traversed on the macro- scale. Look without, and you will find the demon of emotional incontinence and unchastity; look within, and you will be dismayed to find the same.The short term goal of the rough beast’s reign is to sow psychic enslavement, but its “long game” is, I submit, to induce despair. That this mission has largely been accomplished is a reality to which I myself can testify. For I DO despair, quite against my wishes, and very much against my better judgment.
