A short 100-page introduction to the "idea of communism." The book seeks to give historical context to the rise of this very notion, trace its expression during the 20th century, with special emphasis on Stalinism, and make a case to revive it in the midst of the 21st century crisis of capitalism.
While in many ways Ali's introduction is not original in its development, it is certainly accessible and pleasurable to read. Unlike other authors who avoid the issue altogether, Ali is not afraid to confront the monster that Stalinism was, and question whether those miscarriages will happen again. Indeed, his answer to the whole question of the Soviet Union is very dogmatically Trotskyite, but still worth a read.
All that being said, Ali's narration of the history of Stalinism and its influence on characters such as Mao and Tito is provocative and it is certainly the most interesting part of the book. As for the calling to revive communism, the issue is only devoted a mere 10-15 really short pages. Should've been further developed...
If you are not familiar with Marxism and looking for a good introduction to the hsitory of Communism, specially 20th century, this could be a great resource. People more familiar with the literature will not necessarily learn a whole lot, but will enjoy Ali's writing style and incisive commentary.
In all honesty, while the book is good in itself, the most exciting thing about it is the cover design. Really awesome!!!!
