Still chopped

Renea is a prisoner for what she is. But what her kidnapper didn't expect is her already being pregnant by her mate. That puts a delay in his plans to have kids with her himself. But her guys haven't given up. They're still looking for her. And they've brought reinforcements.

Spoilers ahead.
So the same fractured present tense first person storytelling is in place. Except where it switches to past tense, usually in a steam scene. It's oddly disjointed to read that way. So, while the threat of abuse is there during her captivity, the extent of what's done is hunger, fear, and being caged. She's told her mom was pregnant when she died but the way it's told I can't tell if it was her dad or Mason. Because one sentence says she never consented to Mason, the next says he was the dad. So... confusion? So many conflicting ideas again. Shifters are animal form while pregnant, but how can they hide that for 9 months? Up till 100yrs ago sure. But now? With cities, jobs, bills to pay? They'd all have to live in communes to hide secrets like that and they don't. You can't hide wolves, bears, panthers, whatever else in apartment buildings and duplexes. Then they're supposed to shift back to human for birth? Why? It'd be easier for animal birth in many instances. Also, not being able to communicate outside a mate bond, although those are never explained, how would you prepare for a kid? All the supplies needed and she couldn't shop for them? And no way to communicate what you did need, because you couldn't talk to anyone. It would be so incredibly lonely and terrifying. There's a prophecy but it's so vague, even the explanation, that it doesn't say much of anything. And the bad guy they're supposed to face down is some vague mishmash of beings that all we're given is that they performed blood magic, evil magic, to become what they are. The ideas are there, hidden away in rambles, fractured tenses and half forgotten scenes. But they need better fleshing out and editing. Possessives usually have apostrophes, but not always. And tenses changing in mid sentence is jarring. And the contradictions need to be weeded out and streamlined into the plot. And we still have no idea what normal shifters, or her kind, are capable of. So there's weird scenes where she pulls previously unknown abilities out of thin air. It so needs intense editing.

So, very much like the first one, I was super hoping to love this book after winning a giveaway from the author on TikTok, but I definitely still didn't love it. I liked it better than the first one though!
The dialogue is still super stiff, and especially in an "urban fantasy" setting, it's VERY noticeable. No one says "I will do that" or "It is the only way" or "I am coming" in modern times - we use contractions.
It's in the 3rd person POV but it feels really strange and I can't put my finger on why it feels wrong.
The story is also full of holes... it's novella-sized, but rushes through a lot of things with little information. I wish I had more worldbuilding and lore.
Definitely found my fair share of typos and grammatical/formatting errors as well (misspelled character names, tense changes, extra/missing spaces, etc.)
I'm starting the last one now in the series because I'm in it now, and I'm not one to DNF anything.
