ONE MISTAKE IS ALL IT TAKES TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY.
It’s 1973. Oil wars, terrorist attacks, Watergate... Senator Temple has his hands full, maneuvering political turmoil at home and the powder keg that is the Middle East. His mistake allows a criminal businessman to seize control of the world’s energy sector. Powerful oil dynasties—the Kingsleys, the Sheppards, and the Barronses—could help Temple fix things, but greed and old grudges threaten the alliance.
Three families, their fates interlinked. A politician with secrets. An enemy to fear. From high-society New York to dusty Middle Eastern villages, from broken romances to bitter conspiracies, they battle their way through the glitter and grit of the ’seventies and ’eighties. One wrong move from any of them, a single error, will echo across decades and change history.
The Maltese Attack starts a gripping political saga, a tale of powerful men and women who fight ruthlessly, hate virulently, and love unwisely.
Lilah and Harry are missing. As per the news, Harry has killed the abductor and have run away. But later no new updates were received. Are they dead? Escaping the unforgiving sahara is near to the same. They belong from and have links to two very high class and nationally important billionaire families . Here, Temple, the US senitor who happens to be the friends to Shepherd and Barron's is on a wild goose chase to search for them in the chaotic politically unstable border of Libya-Ezypt where the dictetor is blind to stop heinous crimes. A wrong move and you will end up in pieces.
But amidst the vast desert Libya was spoted, the 16 year old teen of the US envoy who was engaged with Harry in Paris when a sudden news of the death of one's parents pushed them into an unthinkable politics of lives where hope and time will shows them the path to get reunited.
But why were they suddenly abducted and forced to such ordeals? All backed by a lifetime full of family secrets that start to speak of the rule of greed of money and power surpassing all family bonds.
In the war of oil and political chaos of the nations, will they be able to save their children and legacy? Is a closed one engaged in this tragedy? What's the agenda behind it all? What I liked about it is that, from the very first page it is intriguing. It is a story of suspense, politically infused agendas, family secrets, war for greed, love, hate but ultimately resilience and hope. A political thriller to keep you on the edge with its riveting backdrop, swift transitions between scenes and subplot, thoughtfully inclusion of deep characters and fast pace engrossing storytelling.
This is a political thriller with a bit of mystery and romance to it. It focuses on the story of three families - Kingsleys, Sheppards and Barronses, a star crossed couple and the fight for political superiority which leads to terrorism, corruption, death and much more devastating consequences. It shows the political rivalry between the US and Libya which is under the authoritarian rule of Gaddafi.
The story starts with U.S. Senator Temple going on a search and rescue mission to find two abducted sixteen-year-old kids Lilah and her friend Harry. After the death of her parents, Lilah and her twin Dan are left with the only option to live with their brother in law who wants to legally adopt Dan. Both Lilah and Dan reject his proposal for adoption but Andrew is determined to get Dan at any cost.
When the political situation in the country is already getting worse day by day, Lilah's sudden trip to Libya to meet Harry makes it more disastrous. They are abducted by someone they were unfamiliar with and encounters far more dangerous circumstances. The news of their abduction reaches Senator Temple who is already in the guilt of his actions in the past goes on a mission to search and rescue them.
Who kidnapped Lilah and Harry? Will they be able to escape from the hands of the kidnappers? Will the political rivalry ever end between Libya and the US? Why is Senator Temple on a mission to save Lilah and Harry? How are the three families interlinked?
The story was fast-paced with interesting twists and turns. The characterization and the narration are very good. All the characters are unique and see given equal importance throughout the book. Lilah's strong nature and her presence of mind and determination in facing the situations at hand is just brilliant. I loved her character in the story.
The story has multiple POV's which makes the story more fascinating. It shows how people for the sake of power go to any extent to achieve what they want. The characters feel so real and the description of violent activities are done perfectly. Altogether it was an emotional roller coaster and a page-turner with an engaging plot that keeps you hooked till the end.
The book starts with the sneak peak of the book attracting all our attention and hooking right at the point. I should say, it imparted a sense of danger and anxiousness into me as I read through it. The love between Lilah and Harry is subtle and felt more real.
A 16 years old girl called Lilah and her friend Harry got kidnapped in Libya. However, the Libyan Dictator Gaddafi denied it. The Senator Temple joins the fight voluntarily and finds that so acclaimed dead young people were still alive. How does the life of the teens, who were living a very good life, travelling to cities and been happy two years ago were now here? It is a political fiction that involving, three families, wars, and a feel of anxiousness all around.
Political fiction had never been my cup of tea, so I found it difficult to understand the problem that was going on. However, I found it more interesting than what I expected it to be. The character list in the beginning of the book served its purpose.
The writing style is so good- it is expressive and it took me time to set my mind that it is fiction. It seemed to be more of a real story. I love the book cover too.
I recommend this book for people who love political fiction. If you hadn't tried this genre yet, then this is a good book to start with.
The book follows Harry and Lillah, two pawns caught up in a war that was not their own.
Fifteen year old Lillah was the daughter of a retired deplomat and his Indian wife. After the untimely death of her parents her world shattered and was forced to become an adult.
Harry was a son of a struggling businessman. An entire nation was after their livelihood and Harry too was forced to become an adult, worrying plotting and trying everything he can to help his father.
When the two sweethearts got together, they were kidnapped. Now the two pawns must fight against all odds, invisible enemies, vile monsters with the help of a few allies.
Things I liked:
The book sets up lot of things for books to follow and establises a lot characters.
A lot of research has been put into writing this book and it can be clearly seen.
The sense of being hunted is captured very well.
Forces of antagonism are quite strong.
Powerful character arcs.
Through out the hardships the main characters endure we will get emotionally invested with them.
Overall I liked the past paced action sequences, political setup and the emotional rollercoaster we will experience. It is fun visiting Libia, learning about the culture and few tribes through this book.
This book is the third of the series of “One Hundred Years of War”, the story is fast-paced and follows the story from where it has left, where you will find even more political turmoil, dangerous escapades, and mission. As now Temple has gathered “The Kingsleys, the Sheppards, and the Barronses” under her name, there is also a romance plot in this book. This book has lots of action, drama, and thrills a complete package for a reader. A Must-read book for a political drama reader.
Do you like political thrillers? I mostly go for psychological thrillers. But as I am slowly expanding my horizon towards newer sub categories of thrillers when I heard about this new release which many have been talking about I thought I shall give it a read even if indulging in politics in these days when the news is almost bubbling with the heat of elections may feel heavy. But to my surprise, the story was so encaptivating, I instantly was drawn into it. The very beginning where the search for the 16 year old Lilah was suspenseful enough to keep me reading till the very last. Why? She is a young girl like us. A sweet one in a bond with her friend. Both are missing. Entrapped into the Mediterranean region by few criminals where the border of the two politically unstable nations are always being patrolled by armed forces, it is impossible to escape. But an US senitor is on the run to save them. The question also is thrown if he who acts like the friend of these two teens families himself is engaged in this crime! Their families are putting blood, sweat and tears to reunite with their lost ones. A mind-boggling link between families spilling many hidden dark secrets, the war for power, suspecipus activities, shuttering twists kept me keep reading as each chapter took me on a jouney into the vast deserts and a tensed family background in the America wrapped up in the reasons that made two teens pay the price of stubborness of two families. And now a lot is on the stake. I highly recommend it to everyone. In this time when we truly need an escape this thrilling fiction can keep our mind engaged.
A story about greed grief self-worth lust ambition struggle for power absolute power and........... love world is changing around us but a human s core nature still can be described by these few emotions and some the author jay perin does fine job of establishing his characters and their many facades before kicking the accelerator taking the story a notch higher and when it does you will not be able to put the book down its story about children shoved into middle of an adults war pawn in a deadly game story of lilah trying to finding her place in this world with her dignity intact story of harry trying to make sense of constantly changing world around him story of dan and his unwavering love loyalty for his sister story of a senator desperately trying to protect his world from those who threaten to destroy it but will he able to protect before its too late
the story entrances you with hues of first love and innocence before everything comes crashing down i guess this one of those books that can be truly called a page turner it lures you in and then keeps you at the edge of your seat till very end
Lilah is missing or you can she have been abducted. But by whom? Who could have kidnapped the daughter of the former U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East? This amazing start to this book was enough to grab my attention and kept me hook till the last page. Not only the prologue was gripping but this book comes with many twists and turns that made the entire read engrossing. . Lilah was enjoying her sweet time in the city of love 'Paris', with her lover Harry. But soon her care free life comes to a halt when the news of the death of her parents broke out. The series of events that takes place after that shaped and sharpened the character of Lilah more and more throughout the book. . The Maltese Attack is political thriller. It focuses on the power struggle and political war between Libya and US and centres three families primarily- the Kingsleys, the Sheppards, and the Barronses. Crime and strive for power in the business world jeopardising the lives of many is a common scenario. Very interestingly written and powerful characters, this is a must read political thriller for everyone.

The story is a page turner read and all the characters were very well described and unique in nature. Some strong characters are shown in the book with their determination and presence of mind. I really liked the book and language is also easy to read.
This novel is considered a political thriller, which I normally wouldn't be interested in because I have no love for politics, but this novel is so much more than that. There is romance, betrayals, family conflict, hidden enemies, and that's just a few of the things that makes this novel a great read. I really enjoyed that this book takes place in the year I was born and that there is a lot of historical references to Nixon, Watergate, Gaddafi and the Libyan oil contracts and the tension between them and the U.S. In fact the oil tensions between Libya and the U.S. is what fuels this book (no pun intended). There are three families that are at the center of this novel and they all have secrets of their own that will indirectly affect the actions of others. It's interesting that on the cover of the novel is a pawn on a chess board because the entire novel is one giant chess game, with the pawns being three young adults, two of who unfortunately are seen as a necessary sacrifice. This novel has so much intrigue and hidden agendas that make it a very good read and maintains the reader's interest.
This book is an engaging political tale of powerful men and women. The story sets up in early 1970s and is about the power and money. The story is about 3 families Kingsleys, Sheppards and Barronses. It also shows the political rivalry between the US and Libya. The author has very well narrated the fight of political superiority which includes terrorism, corruption, deaths and many destructive after effects. He has also talked about how the west made money linking with oil companies of UAE.
The cover of the book is aptly designed. The title of the book is related to the content. The plot of the story is interesting, engaging and relatable. It is a perfect blend of politics, thrill, rivalry, suspense, corruption etc. Language used is simple and lucid. Characters are well developed and described by the author. The flow of the book is well paced.
Overall, an interesting read.
Rating - 4/5
I recommend this book to everyone specially to those who love reading political thrillers.
Maltese is a story of war, a page turning political saga. The timeline is based in 1973 U.S Libya relations. Plotline revolves around the families os Kingsley's , Sheppard's and Barronse's. It portrays politics in its raw form. War , politics and suffering of people. Kidnapping of Lilah and Harry and US Senator Temples mission to find them and bring them back. This takes a toll on US Libya relations which are already so strained. It is an interesting story with a variety of characters. Each character has its own vibe and charm. It is dark , terrifying and political. A fast paced book which keep your adrenaline rushing. The plotline , characters and narration is done well. Overall I enjoyed this book. Do give it a try.
I think this was my first political thriller in a really long time. . From the very starting of the book, you will feel hooked. The first chapter itself builds up the interest in the book, where you see the Senator out on trying to save Lilah and her friend Harry, who are kidnapped. . The book in itself is very fast paced. The plot of the book is very interesting and it doesn't fail to keep you engaged. This book is filled with war and politics. I also loved how the characters are developed in the book. . The ending of the book do suggest that there might be a sequel to it. I for one would be definitely waiting for it.
Political fiction is something i enjoy a lot and with war details its like cherry on top . The depiction of scenes is really engrossings as you can picture it all in your head . The maltese attack starts a gripping political saga , a tale of powerful men and women who fight ruthlessly , hate virulently and love unwisely. The book is a page turner , with good narration every reader would be happy to read this one . Powerful character development of all those young character and the love dynamic is something you should definetly pick this book for ! Happy reading
I received a free copy from Voracious Readers in return for a review. This review reflects my honest opinion - they haven't all been good!
Loved this! Many books that are around the oil and gas industry, or OPEC, can become a bit tedious at times. Don't let that put you off. Tension is built throughout. Characters are believable and well presented. The end manages to conclude the story whilst leaving it open for more. It's one of those books where you can't wait to see how it ends, yet you're sad to leave the lives of the characters.
The Maltese Attack gave me different insights into the internal infighting between major oil companies and political intrigue. The background story of the main young couple caught up in the middle of a power struggle was a great build up to the harrowing ordeal of being kidnapped and their struggles to escape and reach safety, while trapped in Middle Eastern countries. The writing was a fast pace ride of unsuspecting turns of events. The vivid description of the horrid trials and tribulations they suffered kept you on the edge of your seat.
Fantastic, twisty plot. The characters are well done and I want to know more about all of them, even the minor villains. There is a real villain, but he only makes a brief appearance. Can't wait to find out more about him in the next book. This first book makes me want to continue the series, and I hate series books! If you like action, political intrigue and a bit of romance, this is a book you're going to want to read.
I was given the book to review. I enjoy historical fiction and honestly I wasn't sure if I would like this book because of the politics of the middle east. However, I was very surprised how much I liked it. I am very glad I gave it a chance because it was good. The character development was excellent, the plot well established and it kept my interest as a page turner. I look forward to reading mre of the authors work in the future!
This book grabs your attention right from the beginning, and is fast paced to the very end. Two American teenagers are abducted in Libya in the 1970s. An action packed story set against a political background. The story draws you in and you are desperate for Harry and Lilah to escape and to succeed, in their bid for freedom.
Received as ARC. Set in the political turmoil of the 70's, the book gets off to a slow start, due to setting up the backstory. I personally thought this took too long, but when the action starts, it was hard to set it down. A great first in series book. Now that the background is complete, I am looking forward to the next installment.
If the main characters had been young adults, the story would have been both exciting and believable in a novel sense. But, their being 16 years old requires a suspension of belief/common sense to enjoy. I guess I just don’t have that ability to suspend.
I did not enjou this book. To me it was a slow starter. If a book does not grab me in the first chapters I have no desire to finish it. I would normally give books a chance, however i would say this was not my cup of tea. For starters the characters seem to overlap. There was no concise integration of these characters.
Have you read any Political thriller before? What were your reactions about the work? Did it ever impacted you mentally? The Maltese Attack is a Political Thriller with elements of Romance, Business and Family Relations. The protagonist, 16 year Old Lilah gets Kidnapped and is held hostage in Libya, the oil Capital for the World of the 1970's.After she and her friend, Harry is abducted the novel becomes a fast paced and heart racing tale of how senator Temple, risking everything surrounding him jumps on the mission to save the two kings from the clutches of the Libyan Territory. Gaddafi, the then representative of the state denies every allegation that is hinted to him. But, as the time in the plot progresses along with some dramatic details and revelations, senator Temple is challenged to fulfill his mission, and we the readers are are kept at the edge of our seats, gripping to the thread of the story that if at all will Temple become successful in rescuing the kids from their captors? I have not read much political thrillers before and for me this work has been one of the best written works amongst it's kind. The Work opens in the situation of the present where after the rebellious searching operation, Temple finally spots a totally different Lilah along with Harry. The sub plot of romance in this book is equally captivating where to young souls struggle to stay together for ever. One of the most prominent stigma that this book has correctly highlighted is that how the barrier in age still remains a stigma in marrying one of the other's choice, independence and freedom. When an Indian Lawyer that is Lilah' s mother marries a widower quiet elderly from her, that is Lilah 's father who already has an issue from his previous marriage, certainly the become the talk of the people. After finishing this novel, I have gathered a question that why political wars always needs to have a prisoner and why they always have to be the ones who stand as the symbol of innocence?
Love, adventure and honor as two American teens in the 1979s must escape Libya before crooks and Gaddafi make mincemeat of them . Vivid setting, convincing characters and harrowing incidents keep the reader interested enough.
Enjoyed reading, fell in love with Lilah and Harry, great protagonists for next adventure. New York to the middle east the action is spectacular, rich in sights and smells. It provides in depth insights into Libyan politics and global oil monsters influence in international politics.
This read quenched my thirst for International plots along with political intrigue. Not many reads keel me up until the wee hours, but this one dominated my full attention!
received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. I don't normally read political thillers but I really enjoyed this book. It keeps you wanting to read more to see what happens. I definitely will be reading the rest.
I enjoyed reading this story. Some of the subject matter was difficult but described thoughtfully. I don't recommend this book for the young adult reader.
Solid political thriller. A bit annoying at the end with overly verbose soliloquies appearing for the first time. The rest of it was pretty good though.
The Maltese Attack drops us in the midst of the oil wars in Libya, as two teenagers with highly influential families are kidnapped and held for ransom. A setting that explores Libya and Libyan culture in detail as Harry and Lilah make their way through corrupt officials, terrorists and native tribes to find their way home.
The book is brilliantly written, pausing at the right places to help the next event unfold. It starts slow, but once it begins, the exhilarating sense of adventure and adrenaline takes control.
It checks all the bullets of what makes a beautiful thriller!
A plot that rolls like a boulder downhill? Check! Suspenseful incidents at every turn? Check! Twists that you hardly see coming? Check! Characters you fall in love with and remain with you for the long haul? Check! A central plot that involves stealth, escape, betrayal and a lot of gunfire? Check! Political intrigue and an underlying subplot that reveals something greater at the end? Check! And the biggest bonus?
Self Published? Check!
Oh and the ending? The ending is not just an ending but a stage for something bigger, a storm, a new beginning!
I will definitely be looking forward to reading the sequel as in when it comes out.
Self published books are dreams made reality by hard work and a goal to tell a story, the author's story. I was under the misconception that self published books do not make good reading companions but The Sword of Kaigen changed my mind, Never Die instilled more faith and now The Maltese Attack has cemented it. Beautiful stories like this one are being told on an every day basis and often get missed because they are shadowed by books with reputed publishers(not that it is wrong). These stories are missed out and this makes me think about the numerous times I could have stared at a good book and not picked it up because it was not published by someone I'm familiar with.
Why am I telling you this? Well, imagine being ignored just because of certain traits. The popular kids will always be popular because they have the ability to put themselves out there. Us? We need to do something to get noticed, we need a chance, just like these self published books do!
