La résistance expliquée à mes petits-enfants

Rate this book

The shortest book of this series I’ve read so far, it differs from others in being written by a well known member of the Resistance rather than an academic specialist in the field on which it focuses. This seems to make it more a testimony than a wide ranging summary of the topic, and, although Aubrac was a courageous and resourceful participant in the fight against the occupying Nazi regime and Pétain’s Vichy collaborationist government, the book didn’t match my expectations, based on other volumes of a generally excellent series.

She’s also got that annoying habit of using the word “Angleterre” instead of “Royaume-Uni” - maybe it’s easier to spell! - which suggests a certain disregard for historical and political facts. The War Memorials in towns and villages throughout Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland testify to the rather obvious (one might have thought) participation of the other three nations of the UK in the 39-45 War.

An English edition of this book exists too, but I review the French version for its authenticity. I've read quite a few books on the French Resistance to the Gestapo, but the 53 pages of this book depicts that resistance viscerally from a first-hand account; Lucie was right in the middle of it for Raymond. This woman lived long to be a grandmother, only five kilometers from where I live, and given her combative yet affectionate side, I can imagine she wrote this book mostly for her grandchildren. For me, this short book demonstrates the sharp difference between first- and second-hand experiences.
