When zombies show up at their annual barbecue, Wiley and Grampa try to find a way to stop the hungry creatures from eating the other guests until Gramma comes to the rescue with a surprise weapon.
I learned that zombies LOVE to eat BBQ before dining on the living. So make sure there's plenty of grillin' going on should there be a solar eclipse and/or your grandma mistakes her paprika for something you cooked up with the jr. chemistry set.
I must also give the author credit for figuring out a kid-friendly way to kill zombies that didn't involve headshots, decapitation, or other head destroying, brain spraying methods.
I want to see more zombies in both kids and teen books and more completely crazy chapter books like this one - this could make readers out of some of the book-hating-est guys!
My 7 year old and I read this before bed during spring break last week, and really enjoyed it! We had some good laughs as the zombies overtake what is supposed to be a regular BBQ. They are obsessed with the sauce. And when it runs out....the picnic attendees are in trouble!
A wacky, fun and out there read. Perfect for my little guy and I! We will definitely be picking up the rest in this series too.
This book is very interesting. It is about Wiley and Grampa's crazy adventures. On this book, Grampa has its own bbq and magically Zombies start to appear coming from the PPK Wiley and Jubal made.
4 stars! This was a quick and funny read! Although I read it way before I knew Goodreads existed, it was great! I honestly don’t remember much, so that’s all I can say about it! 🤣
"Grampa's Zombie BBQ" by Kirk Scroggs is a funny, lighthearted, quick read that features fun characters like Wiley, Jubal, a lunch lady, lots of hungry zombies, and of course Gramma and Grampa. When zombies first show up at Grampa's annual BBQ no harm is done because the uninvited undead guests prefer to chow down on the chicken and sausages covered in Gramma's secret marinade. But when all the BBQ fare is eaten, the zombies become hungry for human flesh. Wiley and Jubal must find the secret of what attracted the zombies to the barbecue and figure out a way to get them back to their graves. Boys in third through fifth-grade, especially reluctant readers, will enjoy this hilarious chapter book that contains extremely short chapters. It pairs a fast-paced plot, funny one-liners, and whimsical characters into a story that will have readers searching library shelves for more of Wiley and Grampa's adventures.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story, and I highly recommend it. Johnny Heller has the perfect voice for this type of cartoonish book, and his voices made all the characters come alive, especially Gramma and Grampa. Because of its fast pace, engaging story, hilarious illustrations, and the superb voice of the audiobook narrator, readers will finish the book in one sitting and marvel at how 45 minutes just flew by.
Grampa's Zombie BBQ continues the adventures of Wiley and his Grampa, introduced in Dracula vs. Grampa at the Monster Truck Spectacular, reviewed below. This time Wiley and his grandparents are hosting a neighborhood barbecue. Unfortunately, when the hungry dead start to rise from the local cemetery, Gramma's special recipe barbecue sauce isn't enough to appease them, and Wiley and his Grampa have to find a way to stop them before the neighborhood becomes zombie lunch. Once again, Kirk Scroggs has produced a creative, horror-themed book filled with hilarity. There are some jokes and references that children will miss, but adults will catch them, making the book an excellent title for parents and kids to enjoy together. The book is filled with entertaining illustrations that complement the text and has a nice large readable font. The suggested age range for this title is 8-12, but teens may also enjoy it. A great choice for kids who have zoomed through the Captain Underpants books and are, um, hungry for more. Recommended for school and public libraries. Contains: Zombie mayhem, explosions.
I continue with my luck of picking the second book in a series first with Grampa's Zombie BBQ by Kirk Scroggs. It's the sequel to Dracula vs. Grampa at the Monster Truck Spectacular. The books are hybrid graphic novels.
In this book the family is planning for a town barbecue. Something goes wrong and zombies end up invited too! Rather than freak out, Wiley and his family just serve them barbecue just as they do all the other guests.
I liked the book. It reminds me of a juvenile (and violence free) version of the film, Shawn of the Dead. I'm thinking of the ending when the survivors have come to terms with the fact that the zombies can't be defeated and decide to learn to live with them.
The book is aimed at kids about my son's age but he wasn't interested. Traditional monsters aren't his thing. I though zombies might be an exception since he and his sister like to play zombie but, no.
I am zombie friendly. They humor me and in this book the whole cast of zombies, grandpa, and neighbors humored me. I could not imagine being invited to the best BBQ in the county only to have zombies show up that want to eat me. Essentially, that is what happens in this book and the ensuing way to get rid of them is a riot. I found the ingenuity genius!
This book was like one big cartoon from a newspaper with colorful scenery and outrageous characters to make this chapter book fun. Kids will love to see what happens next with every flip turn and will get a chuckle or two along the way. I sure did!
This is a terrific book for the early reader who is interested in zombies and wants a good laugh. 4 stars. Disclosure: I obtained a copy of this book at my local library. The views expressed here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~MM aka Naila Moon
Grampa's annual barbeque is crashed by hundreds of zombies who loved the smell of Gramma's famous BBQ sauce. There's more to the sauce than meets the eye and only something REALLY toxic will be able to save Wiley and friends. Vera, the world's worst lunch lady, provides the toxic borscht that just might do the trick.
Pike just started reading these. They're excellent books for kids! Just the right size to get through quickly, before they lose interest, and there are a lot of pictures, and plenty of wackiness. We went to the library and got three in this series and by bedtime the next day Pike had finished them all!
As funny as the first one. The jokes are quick and constant. It doesn't quite have the heart of a book like Junie B. Jones, but there is a lot to laugh about, a lot of adventure, and a lot of suspense. I'd guess this series would be great as an introduction to chapter books or a read aloud for young kids... especially young boys.
This book is great for the younger boy reader who is ready for bite-sized chapters. The fact that this is part of a "Creature Feature" series (zombies and creepy creatures) makes it ...(Click here for the full review http://storysnoops.com/detail.php?id=...)
I can see why my oldest loves this series. I wanted to know why she likes it so much. So I start to flip through the book, started to read it and well ended finishing it. This was super fast and funny. Has funny illustrations and characters.
