Summary (CIP): From She's Gotta Have It to Malcolm X, this filmmaker [Spike Lee] has brought to the screen penetrating stories and controversial topics. Learn about his beginnings at NYU and how he stays true to his principles.

REVIEW: Not really aimed at their private lives, this series focuses on the making of, type, and response to the director’s films. The book includes a frank discussion of Lee’s film career and movies along with his philosophy. Racism, a core theme for Lee, is addressed throughout by discussing reactions to his films and how he gets targeted as one of few black directors and is made to represent all African-Americans. Extensive quoted passages allow both the director and his critics to speak for themselves. Many movie bills and photos are included along with life and movie chronologies at the end.

Booklist: Positive. "Both works are afflicted with typos, but they still make worthwhile reading for budding filmmakers and general readers with an interest in the history of movies. "
