Ganges #3

Ganges Vol. 3

Rate this book
In the third issue of Kevin Huizenga's Eisner Award-nominated comic, Glenn Ganges still can't fall asleep. In "Mind and Body" Glenn tries lying still, but his mind — The Wanderer — keeps thwarting his plans! In "Getting Things Done" he gives up trying to get to sleep and tries to get some things done...until the cops show up! All executed in Huizenga's strikingly crisp, lovely two-color "clear line" style.

Kevin Huizenga was born in 1977 in Harvey, IL and spent most of his childhood in South Holland, IL, near Chicago. He attended college in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and moved to St. Louis in 2000 where he lives and works.

He began drawing comics in high school, xeroxing his first issue (with friends) at the neighborhood Jewel Osco in 1993. Since that time he's made approximately 30 more. In 2001 the Comics Journal named him "Minimalism Cartoonist of the Year" and called #14 of his "Supermonster" mini-comic series "one of the best comics of any kind released in 2001."

In 2001 he also started the Catastrophe Shop http://www.usscatastrophe.com, an online shop for self-published mini-comics (now run by Dan Zettwoch http://www.usscatastrophe.com/zettwoch/).

After following up the perfect Ganges 2 , Kevin H. gives us the beautifully crafted and thoughtful Ganges 3; however, this long story about insomnia, identity and the flow of thoughts doesn't reach the devastating power of the last issue, especially last issue's story that personalizes the busting of the dotcom bubble by following one fired salaryman whose fate is encapsulated in the fury of a Quake-like first person shooter, and how his co-workers show solidarity while playing the networked shooter, expressing intense and even tender emotions during a session of violent death, which was a crazy story that was both weird and brilliant, yet was still almost matched in the same issue's ending thoughts of love and longing all while resting in bed, staring at a loved one and drifting to sleep. The problem with Ganges 3 is that Kevin H. just used the ruminations-while-resting-in-bed routine. Maybe this issue would be better if I hadn't read the heights of the last issue. This one is pretty good, but it lacks the jarring novelty of the other two issues, and it lacks the psychological power of the Gagnes 2, or of his stories in
Curses . Still, Kevin H. is, for my money, one of the best cartoonists out there, and this is a damn good comic.

"Ignatz" series #35: ¦STAPLED¦ + [->|fully|<-] flapped jacket
—>"First Printing: September 2009" ¦ $7.95

Narrative: *****
He did something masterful here!
In Kevin's obvious self-personification as Ganges, he micro-examined the struggle to fall asleep to the point of exacting subconscious minutia without even being confusing about it, as he watched and made note of himself as a mobile spirit that represented his wandering mind, which I could exactly relate to even from memories of past years when I would invariably lay awake in bed in essentially the same pre-dream theatre.

Delivering personal feelings of self from the past in intimate detail is impressive- but he ALSO tapped in to one of my present issues with a shared sympathy that helped me further understand it. Skipping a long story, I went the whole way from someone who was too much of a "doer" into a "thinker" to the point of being caged in my own head for too much time per day. He described that feeling of letting go of self-awareness into engaging in activity, when time moves quicker and inner issues are cast aside, in a way that gave me new strategy upon reflection in my desperation to "stay outta my own head" more!

Visual: ****
The art is very well considered and orchestrated across the panel sequences.

Kevin Huizenga is my favorite cartoonist these days.

There are lots of great comics out there. The vast majority would still be entertaining as books or movies. Artists choose to work in comics, but tell stories that would be engaging no matter what.

Huizenga is not like this. The plot of Ganges 3 is this: Glen Ganges can't sleep. The amazing thing about Huizenga is that he explores insomnia using the medium of comics as the means of communication. The fact that there's some English in the book is irrelevant - he's communicating with comics.

Not as good as Or Else 2 (my all-time favorite Huizenga), but still gets five stars.

Huizenga never fails to amaze. And this volume has a story called "getting things done," so you know he's calling my name.

Seriously, though. You've got to see this art.
