New Hopeland City may be the birthplace of Tech Shifter gear, but it isn’t the only place that likes to blend technology with folklore. Now, a new nightmare is stalking the streets…When PI Cassie Tam is attacked on the way home one night, she expects the police to get involved. What she doesn’t expect is to be forced into acting as bait to lure out a lunatic in a tech-suit that’s literally out for blood. But past actions have consequences, and doing so may be the only way she can get a clean slate from the city’s law makers. If only that didn’t mean having to face down a wannabe vampire.

3.5 Stars. This is the third installment in the Cassie Tam Files. I have enjoyed this series and these books have all been a consistent 3.5 stars for me. The best way to describe these would be futuristic mysteries. As a guess, this takes place 20-40 years in the future. The tech is amped up but there are no flying cars or anything too fancy. The tech improvements are pretty believable for the time period. In this book Cassie talked a lot about what happened to her in previous cases. Because of that I recommend reading these books in order. If that is not doable I highly suggest at least reading book 2 The Fox, the Dog, and the King before this one. I think you would be scratching you head too much since book 2 and this book are so connected.

Cassie Tam is a private investigator in a city filled with crime. But it also happens to be a city where it’s hard to always tell who the good and bad guys are. After a date with her girlfriend Lori, Cassie is attacked by what she can only describe as a vampire. Since vampires don’t actually exist, Cassie is frightened. When the police give her an offer she can’t refuse, it looks like Cassie will be teaming up with the police to hunt the “vampire” down.

I think Doyle has a great imagination. All the tech they make up is just really impressive and it’s something new every book. It’s also really well explained so I never feel like my brain is on pause or something is flying over my head. What I also really enjoyed was all the action in this book. While the mystery might have been a little less than usual, the action made up for it. There were some really exciting scenes that kept me turning the pages.

My two slight complaints were I needed more of Bert and Lori. Bert is a pet/guard dog that happens to be a robot gargoyle. Yes he’s a robot, but you forget that and I love the parts of the book with him. Lori is Cassie’s girlfriend. Like Bert, Lori was in the book but it just wasn’t enough for me. I’m hoping both have a bigger role in the next book. And there should be a next. At least Doyle left things open for another; and if there is I would absolutely read it.

A copy was given to me for a honest review.

P.I. Cassie Tam is back, just as sassy, with the same amount of snark and attitude, but this time, maybe just a little less fearless, because this time, she was the victim and now the police want her to be the bait. In a world where technology rules, and Tech Shifter gear popularity is growing, must she now deal with a vampire, too?

Who or what is LV48? Is it a secret weapon about to be unleashed on the world? Is it good or evil? What does it want with Cassie? What’s going on with her familiar, her pet gargoyle, a bot with some new quirks showing up daily? Does it have something to do with her case? While we’re at it, why are the police being so cooperative with her?

Matt Doyle’s world continues to fascinate me with Tech Shifters, good old fashioned human frailties and that on again, slightly off again romance that Cassie seems to stumble through.

I love this series, it’s different, not all dark, not all lightness and filled with great vocabulary, Cassie’s ever-entertaining quick wit and sharp mind, not to mention her ability to get herself into a jam, no matter how hard she tries not to! Matt Doyle has created another great read with just enough mystery and suspense to keep me turning pages! And Cassie, he has Cassie!

LV48, the third novel in the Cassie Tam Files series featuring intrepid private investigator (PI) Ms Tam, is another enjoyable addition to this queer sci-fi mystery series. Although it is the third book it works perfectly as a standalone, but if you wish to see Cassie evolve and grow it is worth picking up the previous two. Doyle's writing is easy to follow and he does a good job of immersing the reader in the story from the very beginning. There's a sense of foreboding and menace that runs throughout that comes as a result of not knowing exactly who you are hunting or what they could be capable of once you do collar them.

A quick, easy read and a post-apocalyptic/dystopian landscape that is developed well. I look forward to the next instalment in this futuristic saga.

Many thanks to Ninestar Press for an ARC.

Caz, my favorite P.I. is back along with her metal gargoyle Bert her artificial intelligence with another blasting case where she joins the police department to assist them after being mugged.

The story excited me and kept me on my toes to begin with. I loved the various intricacies of the plot. There was a rising tempo which matched my pulse rate. The plot captured the essence of the first two books and amalgamated with this new case where there was a pseudo vampire terrorizing the 'good' people of New Hopeland...

My third book by Matt Doyle, I couldn't help but follow Caz closely as I simply loved her. I loved her intelligence, her boldness, her courage, out-of-the-box thinking, and the way she walked the world between light and dark, all straight and narrow.

The book started well and then lost me down the pages, all alone with my niggles. The plot though intricate was too drawn out. I wanted more adrenaline in the scenes (as in the previous two books, they have left me with huge expectations), but this lacked the sharp peaks of it. It took me 4 days to finish reading...(Horrors)... And the book left me with unanswered questions, I don't like this strange feeling of dissatisfaction. I am sure it will all be tackled in book 4.

Overall, I am still the biggest fan of Caz and Bert (caw caw) and it was a good read.

Matt Doyle's Cassie Tam Files just keep getting better and better. This outing has Cassie recruited to help the local police department try to track down a tech-augmented "vampire". The criminal has already left their mark on Cassie, and the cops need to use her as bait to lure the blood-stealing vamp back to finish the job.
Bert, my favorite familiar gargoyle/bodyguard is back (CAW!) and we get to know some of the members of the police force a lot better, with some great banter and camaraderie. I have a couple of secondary characters I'm starting to like a lot.
Doyle does a great job balancing the action and the story. I'll take more Cassie Tam anytime I can get her!

This is my favorite of the whole series so far. Love me some action. Just love how with each book, you are seeing so much more development with the characters. Not just the main character but all of them. You really get to see the police working as a team. Even the new character was a really nice touch. He added to the story, made you engage more because you wanted to know more about him.

Just can’t get over that end though, really loved how the fights were done and the whole action scenes. Was nice to see a different side to her.

“Set in the near future, Addict combines the engrossing, tenebrous elements of 1930s noir crime fiction with the spectacle and possibility of science fiction.” – Extract from my review of Book 1 in this series.

I wanted to read LV48 as soon as its release was announced. Not only was it written by Matt Doyle, a highly active and positive member of the online LGBTQIA+ community, but the title was clearly a nod to Aliens – which happens to be on of my favourite movies.

This is the third book in the Cassie Tam series, a collection of futuristic crime noir stories set in the ever-fascinating city of New Hopeland. Manipulated and controlled by a complex criminal network, Doyle continues to work wonders as he explores New Hopeland’s shadowy underworld. It would be difficult to understand the intricacies of the plot without having read the first two, and so I hope readers pick up ‘Addict’ and ‘The Fox, the Dog, and the King’ before delving into LV48. That said, the author has done well to guide readers back into the city’s inner-circle.

This story is—much to my delight—a little lighter on Cassie’s internal monologue and heavier on dialogue and action. The scenes in set in the hospital were particularly exciting; a well-written climax indeed. There are some vague hints about Cassie’s past but, on the whole, characterisation stagnates a little in this instalment. This was fine though, because the focus was more to do with Fuerza’s tightening (or, perhaps, loosening) grip of the city. Cassie’s romance with Lori bookends the mystery plot, as it did with Book 2, acting as a soft form of cushioning for the reader. Given Hanson is a favourite of mine, I was excited to see her appear in more scenes (though, of course, I wanted to see her get a girlfriend). Doyle continues to provide imaginative and intricate detail regarding the operation of technology in his fictional world. In this case, he has concocted a rather magnificent exoskeleton used by the antagonist/s to attack their victims.

This series is palatable and well-executed on the whole. If you like old-school crime fiction (think Bogart or Ford) but with lesbians, mechanical vampires, and psychedelic light shows, then this is the book for you.

This book was provided for free by the author and Love Bytes in exchange for an honest review.

This review was first posted to Love Bytes: LGBTQ Book Reviews. It has been slightly edited here for content.

In the last book in Matt Doyle’s “Cassie Tam Files” series, hot-mess PI Cassie and her tech-shifter girlfriend, Lori, were enjoying the beginning of their shy courtship while Cassie got herself embroiled in the tangled mess of the New Hopeland criminal underworld. Things moved at a slow-but-steady pace, but unfortunately, this book is just plain slow.

The crawling pace of this book comes from Doyle’s still-developing grasp on writing a mystery plot, which was also a huge problem in the first two books. He doesn’t trust his readers enough. By the time Cassie (supposedly a very sharp character) comes to a conclusion, the reader has already figured it out two pages beforehand. Paragraphs are dedicated to putting the spotlight on minute details that mystery lovers have already noted and cataloged for future reference. While Doyle is talented, this series still feels too shy, too insecure. He can obviously handle the gritty and grimy, so he needs to trust his readers with keeping up with a complex mystery, too.

Once more, the technology is a highlight. I like how we get a glimpse into the more horrific aspects of tech shifting and how it can be used to achieve awful means. I also like seeing tech-shifting within the police department and how a counter-culture can blend (with differing results) with bureaucracy. And though the romance is a sideshow still, Cassie and Lori had a lot of nice, quiet moments together that let their easy relationship shine.

I think it is at a plateau in terms of character and plot. The things I’ve enjoyed have stayed consistent, but there needs to be more growth. After book three of this series, I can’t see myself being interested in much more—but who knows. Maybe Cassie Tam will reel me back in once more.

LV48 is a suspenseful continuation of ‘The Cassie Tam Files,’ which features even more twists and turns than the previous books. LV48 takes place shortly after the events of The Fox, The Dog, and The King and jumps right into the action.

What I love about ‘The Cassie Tam Files’ series is the feeling of the novels, you have these noir crime-mysteries taking place in this futuristic but still familiar world. I’ve always pictured these big cityscapes with steam obscuring the streets, dark danger filled alleys, and tech just running a muck throughout- for me it’s all very reminiscent of Blade Runner with it’s gritty glamour.

All of the books in the series really capture this feeling with their amazing and eye catching covers. I particularly love the one for LV48 because it gives a glimpse of the tech suits that have featured throughout the books. As Doyle’s books are so atmospheric and features some really imaginative tech, it is great to be able to see some of this tech. Don’t get me wrong, the descriptions of all manner of different tech paint really great pictures but its great getting to visualise some of the technology within New Hopeland City.

I will admit that mysteries and crime books aren’t usually my cup of tea, so it sometimes takes me a while to finish these stories, but all of the Cassie Tam books have been excellent examples of the genre and have kept me reading to the end. LV48 is ambitious as ever, with a the larger story slowly coming clear – I really enjoyed the story as at no point was I overwhelmed with detail, I was able top easily keep up with the mystery of the novel.

We’re also all in luck because a novella collection has been released by Nine Star Press. The new book is called Shadows of the Past and looks to be as interesting as ever!

If you’re looking for an immersive, atmospheric, and intricately told science-fiction crime story featuring a kick-arse, lesbian detective with relationship issues, the look no further than LV48 and ‘The Cassie Tam Files’ because they’re the books for you!

Please note: I received a copy of LV48 from NetGalley.

Even though I'm starting the series with this novel the book was easy to get engaged with. I didn't feel lost or confused. The characters were interesting and different enough so that each one stood out in my head with ease. I liked the idea of a strong female lead and I loved that her being a lesbian was a non issue (as it should be). I found the backdrop for the story interesting and I really wanted more of that (this is my only criticism of the story I would have loved more information on the world of this book), but I loved what I got. The author was able to craft a good mystery but didn't bog us down in details that made the story lag. Overall it was a fun read and I enjoyed it.

I would definitely be interested in picking up the other books in the series.

4.5 Stars.

Another good series instalment in the futuristic New Hopeland with a favourite PI of mine, Cassie Tam.

LV48 revolves around a vampire Tech Shifter that has created waves in New Hopeland, and Cassie Tam is its latest victim. The NHPD make sure she joins them for this investigation, a little coercion is required as Cassie usually works for herself, but she has friends on the force and they work well together.

Bert is back, Cassie's AI gargoyle. I love his protective ways - Caw.

Cassie is dealing with her issues around Tech Shifters, which is good because her girlfriend Lori is Ink, a panther TS.

This is an interesting series for lovers of (LGBTQ) futuristic and tech related fictional reading.

The mystery was much more solid in this one, and at some moments quite thrilling. I was a bit disappointed how much questions were left unanswered in this one. I really really hope there will be another book in the series. Cassie is a cool character, real bed ass without being unrealistically “super-human”. There are things she is good at, and there are things she is not. I loved the side characters in this story. We got to meet New Hopeland finest, and they all were quite interesting, multidimensional with good stories to tell. We also got some nice info about Bert and familiar’s AI. I loved that Cassie is ready to except him as a living creature. He is fierce little cutie.

Vampires in New Hopeland?

LV 48 is the third of the Cassie Tam files by author Matt Doyle and follows the cases of Chinese-Canadian private investigator Cassandra Tam. Picking up shortly after the close of The Fox, The Dog and The King, life for Cassie has settled down a bit and she manages to get an evening out with her girlfriend, Lori. But when a quiet evening out turns into a harrowing encounter with a mysterious creature, Cassie realizes that there will be no rest for her. Upon finding out that she has become the latest in a series of bizarre “blood muggings”, Cassie once again finds herself working with the cops in order to track what they have termed the “LV” or light vampire. Teamed up with the head of the Tech Shifter division, Cassie enters a dangerous game of cat and mouse with her most terrifying adversary to date. As the threads start to unravel and the mystery of the “light vampire” becomes clear, it comes as no surprise to Cassie that the motivation of the LV revolves around the criminal underground, but how deep do the tentacles go and how many more people will fall victim to these tech-enhanced nightmares before they are apprehended?

With Cassie’s third case closed, we see a return to the more tech-heavy Noir feel that we saw in “Addict”. The LV’s introduction as another player on the already bizarre field of New Hopeland’s inhabitants when you think about it really is a natural progression due to the availability of tech in the city. But with people having the ability to literally become whoever (or whatever) they want to become with the addition of a few prosthetics also comes the challenge of determining the motives and identity of the person within. Cassie once again finds herself relying on her contacts both within the police force and the criminal underground in order to crack the case. LV 48 is probably my favorite in the series thus far, but that’s not saying much because all the books in this series are excellent. With the case of the light vampire closed, Cassie can get back to normalcy; or can she? I cannot wait to see what Doyle and New Hopeland have in store for this P.I. when her next case comes knocking.

*I received a free copy of this book, with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

LV48 is the third in the Cassie Tam series and further develops the wider storyline of Cassie vs the Four Kings and New Hopeland’s culture of corruption.

Here are the familiar faces alongside Cassie – Bert, Lori and Ink – but we get to see a different aspect to Cassie’s work as she partners with the police to form a crack team to take down the latest threat to the city. I particularly liked the team dynamics between Cassie, Hanson, Dev, Hoove, Donal et al, and felt that the developing roles of these side characters really enriched the story.

We’ve already seen the Tech Shifter equivalent of werewolves and now Matt Doyle gives us some high tech vampires as antagonists, with some very nasty tricks under their wings! I love the blend of old mythology with new technology that the author has created and continues to explore and expand as the series progresses.

An interesting quirk which I will be looking out for in future instalments is how, whilst half of Cassie’s job involves routine police e-paperwork and legwork, the other half seems to be increasingly solved in Cassie’s subconscious mind. I really enjoy when the author indicates that Cassie has picked up something ‘off’ but isn’t consciously able to pinpoint what, because it allows me to pay along and try to figure it out before her!

Fans of urban sci-fi PI adventures will love this series, and this is definitely another great addition to the Cassie canon.

“Help…me…”
I freeze. “Hello?”
“Help…me. Please…” the voice comes again, rising weakly from a darkened alley a few steps ahead.
I narrow my eyes, my internal paranoia engine on full alert. Mysterious voices crying for help from darkened alleys are not always what they seem. My moral-compass is pointing due innocent-in-trouble though, so I opt for the balanced approach and walk towards the alley. Slowly.

– Matt Doyle, LV48

An exciting new adventure for Cassie!

Cassie is attacked on her way home. In another exciting adventure, she finds herself getting involved unexpectedly in the investigation into why, and what attacked her, after expecting the police to help. With a vampire like creatures looming in the streets, threatening the city, Cassie is facing new and different enemies, Cassie is threatened with helping bring them down if she wants a clean slate from the law.

I love this series. Each additional story brings something new and exciting for Cassie to face. Life is never going to be simple for her with technical beings, and now mythological creatures invading the city and attacking people, especially her. It is the mystery that always surrounds the investigations Cassie finds herself embroiled in that really make these stories. It is an ever changing world and each time Cassie has new challenges to face.

With this story it was exciting to see how Cassie handled being involved with assisting the law. She is usually one for setting her own rules. She has her way of doing things, but this time she is having to work with others and build her team skills, yet still she independently remains strong and self-assured in rising to the challenge and solving another case relying on herself, alone. I loved joining her for this latest mystery and trying to work it all out with Cassie to figure out what was going on.

Although part of the Cassie Tam Files series, you could read LV48 as a standalone story. However, you will definitely benefit from understanding Cassie if you have read the other books in the series, which I would highly recommend.

A very exciting and thrilling read, great instalment to the series that has left me nothing but excited to read more in this series. It is thought-provoking, futuristic, and completely brilliant.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve followed Cassie into the ever-murky waters that is New Hopeland. I’ve missed her, Bert and the other colorful inhabitants of this world. Doyle does a great job of presenting us with another great mystery, and of course Cassie does her thing as the titular prickly, yet lovable PI in the game. Stakes are higher than ever, the mysteries run deeper and the who knows just what LV48 actually is. What we do know is that Cassie is a target and she and the New Hopeland PD use this to their advantage in trying to get a leg up on the one running around terrorizing the city as of late.

I’ve got to say, I loved this one just as much, if not more than the previous two books. We’ve got the lovable Bert (who remains one of my favorite characters), Lori (who I also like quite a bit and best of all, we get more of Cassie interacting with the PD characters I like. We also see Cassie develop more as a person, and I loved that. Seeing a character go through changes you didn’t think possible before…that puts a smile on my face. The case is a tough one, we see Bert go through some things, and man oh man did I mention the character development from Caz? I was going to go into more detail, but I thought what better what to get you to enjoy this book than just a whole hearted recommendation?

GO READ THIS BOOK!!!! It’s that good.

I have enjoyed reading Matt Doyle's Cassie Tam series and hope that he continues to write them. A great mix of mystery, sci-fi/cyberpunk and detective story makes them an enjoyable read.

That being said, I still find Mr. Doyle's style of endless description in LONGGGGG paragraphs a little hard to read. I think that this book in particular would benefit from more action and less description at times.

I enjoy the cyberpunk aspects of this series and Mr. Doyle's imagination is wonderful. I have always wondered what it would be like to be a big cat or wolf and the idea of that being a possibility some day is great. The descriptions of the Tech Shifters is a great addition to the books.

There is a little bit of romance, but it is not graphic. The emerging relationship between Caz and Lori was a very minor part of this book. As another reviewer stated, I also missed Bert's presence throughout this book. Who wouldn't love to have a robotic gargoyle as pet/protector?

I like how Mr. Doyle adds a new aspect to each of the books in this series and the vampires in this one were especially interesting. However, I once again wish there was more action and explanation of motivation and less lengthy descriptions of walking through buildings, etc.

I was given the opportunity to read this book by the author through a review group and chose to review it.

Matt Doyle has a neat future with tech-shifting, suits that give a person animal shapes; techno werewolves. P.I. Cassandra Tam’s third case involves a different sort of suit. LV48 (ebook from NineStar Press) is a suit that gives the wearer vamperic abilities in order to collect blood samples. Cassie is attacked, but the blood sample is broken in the fight to defend herself. Since the ‘vampire’ left a tracking chip, Cassie is drafted by the police as bait to lure the attacker in. Many of the victims have a relationship to New Hopeland City’s gangster family, adding to the fun puzzle. I had a lot of fun, even though I never read the first two books in this series. I thought this was a pretty cool cover... and it’s perfectly fitting for this sci-fi mystery story.

LV48 is Book 3 in Matt Doyle’s Cassie The Tam Files series. I’ve enjoyed the first two, this one and look forward to more of Cassie’s stories. Although this is part of a series, each book is a complete story and necessary backstory details are presented. It works as a stand-alone.

The mystery: When Cassie is attacked by a supposed mugger, she’s thrust into a new case and a new role working alongside the New Hopeland police department. The mugger is nicknamed LV48 and the mystery of who he is and why he is attacking must be solved. There are several characters pulled into the story as victims, suspects and investigators. Each one brings a different slant and new possibilities to consider. I thought the pacing was very good even if a bit fast as characters and scenes change and unfold. Some of the manoeuvrings are a bit intricate and I was a little confused at times but overall the story flowed well.

The secondary characters introduced in the first two books are brought back and some of them have more of their backstories revealed. It was fun to get to know the PD staff better and the inclusion of tech shifter marshall, Donal was a well-written, entertaining addition.

The number of characters and how many of them are connected could be confusing at times and I did find myself double-checking a few bits. One character will probably show up again in a later story, providing a bit of a cross-over from this book and some more answers.

The technology: I found it very Interesting to read about the ‘futuristic’ tech being described. The stuff that Matt introduces isn’t too far out or far off. You can just about imagine it being invented soon enough. Except the pet-protector AI gargoyle, Bert, as wonderful as he could be.

Overall, this is an entertaining, well-plotted futuristic mystery and I look forward to continuing this series.

I am thoroughly impressed with the 3rd book in the Cassie Tam Files. LV48 was gripping, fast-paced and just as entertaining as the first two. This might be my favorite of the three.

I’m a huge fan of Matt Doyle’s writing. He has a really great talent in writing mystery in a Sci-Fi story. I was invested and surprised in the end.

There are a lot of characters, which could get confusing at times, but every one was very well developed. I love the characters that have shown up in each story, because they have all grown every book.

I highly recommend this one. It’s a fast-paced, sci-fi thriller with cool technology and interesting characters.

This is my third Cassie Tam book, and the author's imagination continues to amaze me.

Although each novel introduces new futuristic technology, the descriptions are detailed and so well done that it's easy to visualize.  The drawings near the end of the book help explain the tech even more.  This time around Cassie faces a "light vampire" - which explains the title.  I love me some vamps, but these aren't the traditional vampires seen in most novels and and movies - no spoilers here.  Cassie is wrangled into working with the police department on the case and, although not crazy about the idea, she makes the best of it and and dives in head first - which is a trait I admire.  That and her snark - I always appreciate witty snark.

Bert, her gargoyle familiar, has to be one of my favorite characters.  He's protective and kind of moody, but you gotta love him.  Cassie and Lori also have some nice scenes together in their new-ish relationship, but I wouldn't have minded more.  Some new characters are also introduced, and I hope to see more of them in future books.

While there are action-filled scenes, the pacing waned a bit for me in the middle.  I guessed who the villain was early on, but it took longer for it to click with Cassie and friends than expected.  Still, I'm a fan of this thrilling sci-fi series, and it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the novel.
