It has been seven years since David sent the Ancient Enemy back to its world in the ghost town that was once the town of Hope's End.
Cole and Stella have lived in Costa Rica for the last seven years. They wanted to believe that it was really over . . . but there were always doubts. And when Stella sees a horrifying vision in the jungle, she's certain that the Ancient Enemy has returned.
David, living at his aunt's house in New Mexico, knows the Ancient Enemy is back; he can feel it. And now nightmares about a serial killer possessed by the Ancient Enemy plague him, a killer who will stop at nothing, a killer who is coming for David. With Joe Blackhorn dead now, the only person David can turn to is Begay, the former captain of the Navajo Tribal Police.
Former FBI agent Palmer's nightmares have returned, and when he's called in as a consultant on the recent copycat murders - re-creations of the massacre at the archaeological dig site seven years ago - he knows that the ancient evil is back.
Together, they are drawn into one last stand against the Ancient Enemy . . . but this time the battle will be fought in the Ancient Enemy's world.
One of the best series I've ever read comes to an end. Darkwind, after being driven back into his own world is back. David has to make a final stand against the Ancient Enemy. Stella, Cole, Agent Palmer and the others are all in grave danger. Then there is a copycat-killer who additionally creeps you out since Darkwind is inside him. Will David succeed against the evil when entering the Void? With the Ancient Enemy you can never be sure that it is defeated once and for all. Nailbiting fourth and last installment of this fantastic series. Secretly I do hope that the author comes back to this characters and the evil force described here. Must read. One of my highlights in the young year 2020!
This was the final book and that makes me sad, but I also feel pretty good because this series was just awesome, what a rollercoaster it was. Not for the weak hearted (witch I thought I was) but I loved those 4 books. And I am very happy with the ending, Mark did a exellent job. Looking forward to new books from him, thanks Mark.
The Ancient Enemy series is one of the creepiest and most engrossing series I've read. I waited to review it until I finished it, as all too often I greatly enjoy the beginning of a series but am disappointed by the finale. That was not the case with The Ancient Enemy series, the final confrontation is a worthy to end the series. If you spook easily or have a low tolerance for extremely disturbing imagery, stay away. If you love complex story lines with well written characters and dialog, on the other hand, Ancient Enemy is for you. If you're A Stephen King fan, Mark Likens needs to be on your radar. This series is on par with King in his prime, far, far exceeding anything written by Koontz, Saul or other popular horror writers. This one will stick with me for some time, and I mean that in the absolute best way possible! 5/5 stars, not just for Evil Spirits, but the entire 4 book series. I'm going to recommend this to people who don't read much anymore, the author hooks you from the beginning of book 1 and won't let you go. Just be sure you have plenty of time available to read, because its almost impossible to put down. I lost a lot of sleep in the last 3 days reading the series, you should expect to experience the same thing. Highly, highly recommended!
There is always a war between good and evil and this four novel story shows us that we can never truly erase the battle, just postpone it. In this novel David the present day shaman, has to deal with the Ancient Enemy in the space called the void, to defeat it by removing it's power and closing the doorway that had been breached, ending the cycling return for David 's life. Based on the horrid events that occurred in the previous 3 novels, this novel continues with the continued gruesome macabre killings. Details are very vivid in description, so if you aren't into horror, please skip over these details of you may have problems sleeping at night.
Fairly decent wrap to the series. But I feel the same about this book as the two previous: love the plot, great ideas; poor writing. Very linear. All tell tell tell…
I really did enjoy the series. It was a simple read; easy to follow. And it was a fun, sometimes exciting series of events.
But much of it felt the same: dead people + tentacles = meat marionettes; deep guttural voices; people torn apart—blood, broken bones, strips of muscle and other soft tissue. Also—a very predictable ending.
I’ll definitely give Luken’s other books a try. Maybe it’ll be better; or maybe just more of the same. Maybe he’s evolved as a writer..? Only one way to find out.
I finally finished all 4 books in the series. The original characters finally fought the Ancient Evil and kicked some tail. They hard a hard time fighting their fight but it was well worth it. The characters old and new are very well developed and you can't help but root for them. I really recommend that you read the entire series because just this alone would leave you with lots of questions. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
Times are few and far between when a book holds my interest throughout. This series was one of them. I feel a bit lost now because each time I read it’s like returning to old friends. A major disappointment though was the abrupt ending and the rather gentle way the story ended. It’s almost as if the author was tired of writing the story and wanted to be done. It’s a shame because the whole story was so compelling, exciting and gripping.
This book is the fourth and final book in the Ancient enemy series this book is about a young teenager who has to fight and ancient enemy from his past life .
This is a really good series I really enjoyed this scary and action pact story I really liked the ending I would definitely recommend this series to any who loves a good horror story .
David is now fifteen years old and trying to just have a normal life. Until he begins dreaming again. In fact everyone that was with David in the ghost town begins to have bad dreams. Can the Ancient Enemy be back?
David’s mentor has passed away. Can he hope to fight this enemy on his own?
I have loved reading all the books in this series and will miss Cole, Stella and David. Mark Lukens is still my favorite"new" author and he holds a high honor in my book as being right up there with my favorite horror author, Stephen King.
Mystery, terror, action aplenty. Even though more good people were lost, good triumphs over evil. The hero rides off to a better future. Others pick up the pieces and move on. A good end to the series. Thanks for the GoodRead.
Read it in one day it is that good, couldn’t put it down. Scary and kept me looking over my shoulder. When the pizza delivery guy knocked on my door I almost screamed.
A good end to the Ancient Enemy series. Alt thought I though it would be a little more climatic. It seemed to end to easily after all these years. Still well worth reading
Glad to finally finish this series. Was a great series. The last book should've been read at the same time as the first three. But I am still glad I finished it. Overall a very enjoyable series.
Sadly this series has ended, but what a whirlwind of action and insight into Native American beliefs in good and evil. Thank you for a wonderful adventure!
This was a great finish to a really thrilling series. Warning, it is a little gory. However, it is a super fun read. (I read the version from the box set.)
The final entry in Lukens' superb Ancient Enemy tetralogy. The Ancient Enemy is back and after revenge on David and all those who opposed it in previous novels. As always the gruesome, almost ritualistic, murders begin again as the body count, sometimes literally, piles up. The series as a whole is thoroughly enjoyable horror for those who like their tales both well written and gruesome.
