This is the first extensive anthology of contemporary Sami literature in English. The Sami are the indigenous people inhabiting Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia's Kola Peninsula. Twenty-one authors from all four countries are represented with poetry, short stories and excerpts from novels. Many of the authors are award-winners, and some have been included in Nordic and international collections. The readers will be introduced to a variety of themes and experiences, from wolves attacking a reindeer herd to river boat rafting and the making of a shaman drum, from the most tender love poems in Arctic surroundings to the bitter realities in the everyday life of a suppressed minority. The text reflects Sami resilience and selfhood, and expresses the Sami's own perspective on their struggle to preserve traditional values in modern society
