I don't have any justification on why I picked this book. Other than absolute impulsiveness.

I also didn't know that this was going to be made into a movie. But I'll surely give that movie a skip if it followed the book.

The blurb was interesting when I read it but in the book it was horrible.

I get that Clara found the texts as a way to grieve and let out her feelings but it took the entire book for Sven to let her know about it. It took them 3/4 of the book to meet each other just for them to be together instantly. The romance wasn't developed and it just clicked too fast between them. I thought there would have been more about Ben's past but it wasn't clear. The pace of this book was way, WAY too slow. I felt like I was just going back and forth between the texts in a chatroom which doesn't need to be so long.

But, it is my first translated book. This book originally came out in German in 2009. And I have null knowledge on anything related to Germany so some of the details were new to me.

I don't even know what is my review about now because I'm that underwhelmed.

You want me to believe that the man described in this book is this man…

I’m sorry, but no.

I have a feeling the movie based on this book is going to be a movie “based” on this book.

The only thing going for this book is that it had a catchy Goodreads description. I wondered how I’d never heard anyone talking about this book… but now I know why. The people who’ve read it want to forget they did.

Premise is great and there is a movie coming out next year I think, but this is not holding my interest at all so it's time to move on.

Se llamará ‘Text for You’ y estará protagonizada por Sam Heughan y Priyanka Chopra. Espero que sea mucho mejor.

0.25 stars. Holy fuck.

What this book had going for it: Interesting synopsis, it was short.

What this book didn’t have going for it: Everything else.

I do NOT know how this got on my radar, but the premise sounded angsty so I went with it. Plus it’s going to be a movie and for some reason, I think that means it must be a good book. They probably just bought it for the premise.

What I didn’t do was check the reviews beforehand… cuz if a book averages under 3, there is a major problem with it. AKA it sucks. It is also translated… and you can always tell when a book is translated. All of the dialogue, and really the writing in general, is awkward and stilted.

This was so awful. So. Awful. I would love to read a completely different version of this premise. Instead, I skimmed most of this dreck.

This book brings me comfort like a Lydia bird or a Josie silver novel. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters but the love aspect felt a bit rushed. Other than that, a comforting read.

You guys I wanted to LOVE this one soooooooo much but sadly this British, closed door romance was kind of a disappoint for me. :(

The potential was high for this love story featuring a woman trying to move on after losing her boyfriend to suicide but the anonymous texting plotline just didn't work for me. I was not invested in these characters AT ALL. Which made me really sad! I hope that the movie (which has some of my favorite actors attached) will be so much better!

Do you like heartbreaking, clean romances?? If so, this might be right up your alley. Not even my favorite audiobook narrator (Natalie Naudus) could save this book for me! :(

If you wanted to bore someone to death, this would be my weapon of choice.

If my worst enemy asked for a book rec, this is the book I would suggest.

Do yourself a favor and if you must bore yourself to sleep with this book, only read the texts in the book until they meet. There’s approx one text per two chapters. That’ll save you like 70% of the book. Other than that, this is quite possibly one of the slowest books I’ve EVER read. And it’s not even long!! It’s 245 pages of… what exactly? I can’t figure out.

I genuinely can’t believe this got published.
First of all, it took THE ENTIRE BOOK for them to meet. Literally at 77% done, they hadn’t met. Unreal. And then it was IMMEDIATE falling in love?! Coming off your fiancée dying??? So unbelievable.
There was no depth to this story, it felt unfinished, the characters were surface level.
I’m sure the movie will be better but I’d have liked to see more slow burn of the relationship and a realistic development of feelings.

Wow. This was a completely unoriginal premise poorly executed. Through hideous contrivance two people fall in the single most ridiculous case of insta-love I've ever seen. I can't even imagine why someone felt this needed to be translated to English. Avoid at all costs.

I picked this up after seeing it on highlighted on one of my favorite Bookstgrammer's page. Though it didn't have good GR reviews, I decided to give it a chance, in part because it is going to be made into a movie starring Sam Hueghen & Priyanka Chopra Jonas called "It's All Coming Back to Me" out in Spring 2023.

Sadly, the negative reviews were all too right... While it has a cute premise, it left me unsatisfied. Clara is a likable MC and throughout the novel struggles with the death of her fiance/boyfriend, Ben. Sven, a successful finance reporter, receives her loving and melancholy texts, but never responds. Instead, he develops an unrequited affection for his mystery texter over the course of the 6 or so months Clara texts what she believes is Ben's number. As an investigative reporter, Sven eventually tracks her down and uses an article he's writing as pretext to their introduction. This leads to insta-love - admitting he loves her on their third date - (one of my least favorite tropes) and an HFN ending that comes on quite quick and a without any preamble to justify it.

So, what did I think... I think that it suffered from a poor translation. Originally written in German, the sentence structure and word choice was an issue, though it bothered me less as I got further into the story. Honestly though, there are just so many books that use this same idea and execute it a lot better. Between the stalker-type behavior Sven employs to Clara's easy forgiveness when she discovers his subterfuge, it was a miss for me. Hopefully the movie will undergo some rewriting to bring it up to par.

Sofie Cramer's Text for You, an English translation of the 2009 German SMS für Dich, has me befuddled. Or rather, the push for this book to be translated into English and adapted to the big screen nearly 15 years after being first published in Germany has me confused. Let's also take note that SMS für Dich was ALSO made into a movie in Germany in 2016. My question is WHY and why NOW?

The concept of Text for You is nothing new. In fact, I feel that I have seen this plot line in one form or another in several books published over the years. So why is this version of the story being adapted to film when the source material is so poorly done? Text for You meanders around the issues and characters, not really going anywhere, and certainly not in an engaging or interesting way. When the two main characters do meet and fall in love, it literally happens so fast that I, listening to the audiobook, completely missed that something significant was happening. Clara is grieving her deceased boyfriend and immediately falls for this stranger that she has been accidentally texting, but has never actually had a conversation with? Not buying it.

Perhaps Text for You feels fresh and original in Germany, but the American audience has read this story multiple times over by the year 2022. I just don't find that there is anything "new" to gain from this book. Hopefully the screenwriters beef up this story and give it more substance because as is, it is severely lacking. I do recommend this book to readers who might be new to the idea of meeting the love of your life over text, but for the rest of us, Text for You is likely to be a snoozefest.

I was disappointed with this book; not sure if it can partly be attributed to it being translated or not. It started off promising, with an often used plot device of strangers meeting through incorrectly sent text messages. But as the book went on, the characters felt flat, and Sven was just creepy and stalker-ish, which he does admit to feeling.

I ended up skipping through much of the book towards the end, as I prefer dialogue to description in my novels, and here the dialogue was minimal. Also, there were scenes where Sven and Clara seem to overreact and got angry and impatient with each other in situations where it a bit of discussion and questioning would have had a better result (but yes, maybe a more boring scenario). Not to mention a glaring error where Clara's name is written instead of Sven's friend to whom he is speaking.

I am curious how the movie version, which is apparently being filmed now, will deal with this uncomfortable plot.

Oof. This one took forever because it was such an utter snooze fest. The premise was phenomenal. But it took forever for anything to happen and once it did a.) we didn’t even get to see it and b.) it was over.

I picked this up on a whim while hungover at Penn Station awaiting my ride home via Amtrak. I’d been in town a night or two for an event and had finished whatever I’d brought. I hadn’t expected to. Now, don’t get me wrong, I read a TON of really light stuff and I genuinely enjoy it, but this? This was awful from the start. So awful, in fact, that I set it aside immediately when I got home.

Buttttttttt… I’m on a mission this year to finish all of the many, many unread books I own (physical, e-, and audio) so I picked it up a few weeks ago and have been plodding along.

I’m glad I am down a book. I’m bummed it’s this one. Onto the next!

Casualidad, destino?

Clara and her fiance have an argument. Before they can make up, he dies. Grief stricken, she texts his phone number as a way to "talk" to him. Unbeknownst to her, his number now belongs to someone else, Sven. Sven is captivated by her messages and eventually wants and sets out to meet her.
I picked this up from my library while browsing. It sounded interesting. In reality, not so much. Clara and Sven do NOT meet (I repeat do NOT meet) until well past the 1/2 point of the book (it's actually closer to 75%). And then their relationship is way too fast. Just no. I didn't 1* this since I actually did finish it for a Bingo square

I liked the premise for this book
I picked it up to read before the movie coming out
Maybe it was the translation
I liked the 2 characters and the story line and the idea of it and expected more
It just ended too quickly for me in the end unless the first part of the book dragged?
Had more promise on paper sadly, hopefully I enjoy the movie more

A fine enough, mystery driven rom-com book that has a very intriguing set-up that simply doesn't deliver well in terms of pacing and believability. The tension from Claras (female mc) past sets up a great opportunity to show growth and her learning to love, however it seemed at times that it was just holding her back for way too long and at times made Clara insufferable to listen to. The point in which her character starts to shift really jenks the pacing as she continues to fight growth until meeting Sven, in which case the pacing falls off the deep end. Sven (male mc) is a good enough character and a bit more enjoyable to read, although he doesn't really exhibit much growth (least compared to Clara) and he is not really given any reason at all to pursue Clara until much later in the story.
Although this book is framed as a rom-com, it is almost exclusively a comedy (and at many parts a tragedy) until the very end as the writing, especially from Clara's POV, is so distanced from emotions asides for anger, depression, and desperation that it seems entirely out of place for the MCs to just fall head over heels for each other at the end. That said, the comedy was alright, and the comic relief characters on either side of the story were funny and useful enough in terms of the plot.
Although it may be a difference of cultures as the author is German, however the diction and syntax of the whole book was a little off putting and made the characters and their thoughts seem inhuman at times. Characters sometimes talked in their head as if they were distanced from themselves. The narration also was unnecessarily and boringly specific and direct, not leaving readers much room to imagine or think ahead since every fact hit like a brick.
All in all, a fine enough rom-com with mystery and tragedy thrown in that reads a bit awkward, but hooked enough to worth reading to finish

Text For You by Sofie Cramer translated by Marshall Yarbrough
originally published as SMS für dich
245-page Paperback

Genre: Romance

Featuring: Hamburg and Lüneburg, Germany; Text Messages, Cell Phones, Death, Grief, Get Out Your Baby Name Book or Site, Dual POVs, Unnumbered Chapters, Pink Floyd, Secret Identity Trope, Slow Burn

Rating as a movie: PG-15 for adult content

Songs for the soundtrack: “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion, “Far From Perfect, But He Was Mine” by Chanteuse, “See You Again” by Carrie Underwood, “There You’ll Be” by Faith Hill, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” by Al Green, “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd, "Gekommen um zu bleiben" by Wir sind Helden Floyd, "Us and Them" by Pink Floyd, "Time" by Pink Floyd

My rating: ⭐️⭐️½🤳

My thoughts: 📖 Page 62 of 245 Sven - These people are utterly dull. The names are all over the place. I don't know how realistic that is, but it feels odd to me. These texts aren't doing it for me.
📖118 Clara - Ugh! I fell asleep! Now I have to backtrack.

I don't know if something was lost in translation but this story was awkward. First, it didn't seem like a romance and it was a bit boring. Then after they finally meet I don't get the connection or anything. They are talking about moves and it's like, how did this happen, it's like they connected off-camera we got random highlights. He is talking about how he thinks they are going to sleep together, then they meet up and are kissing, but then it's like their first date ??? Throw the whole book away I'm so confused. The 3rd act and beyond was cheesy and outlandish, kinda ridiculous honestly. Don't get me started on the nonexistent ending.

Recommend to others: Nope. This was just weird, not horrible just odd and choppy.
