ESSENCE ( Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations ) refers to the group of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, ADHD and tic disorders as well as conditions gaining increasing awareness such as ARFID, PANS and PANDAS. Professor of child psychiatry Christopher Gillberg describes the lifetime prognosis of ESSENCE, examining the common co-occurrence between these conditions and the symptoms they present. Whilst diagnoses are often treated in isolation, Gillberg presents these issues as an overall condition, and advises treatment and support based on a holistic approach. This book also demonstrates the need for holistic whole-person interventions and assessments to improve outcomes for people within this group.

Begrepp som självet, delad gemensam intentionalitet, är strukturerna som bygger upp metafysiken. Detta är avgörande för att förstå teologiska begrepp liksom treenigheten. Begrepp som ryms inom ESSENCE-paraplyet har kanske sina motsvarigheter i kyrkohistoriens själavård, men då får man leta längre bort än den pietistiska väckelsen, ett försök att samla flocken under kristider, med rätta kan man beskriva dess själavård som 'ett opium för folket', smärtstillande suggestion.

Jag tror att stoikerna försökte hitta 'botemedlet' till den så kallade psykiska ohälsan, och den katolska traditionen, som har förvaltat det grekisk-romerska arvet, har bättre förutsättningar till att försöka angripa de 'psykiatriska' tillstånden ADHD och depression, där den moderna predikanten står handfallen. Möjligen finns svaret i beskrivningen av det interpersonella som dramaturgi, vilket förklarar teaterns uppsving efter kyrkans sönderfall , inom dramat försöker man förklara de sociala mekanismer som leder till psykisk ohälsa

I read this book in English and it was sent to me by the National Autism Society in exchange for a review for publication in their magazine, 'Your Autism'.
This book details the different neurological conditions classed as ESSENCE which includes Autism, ADHD and lesser known conditions such as Selective Mutism and the focus is that all the conditions overlap and that individual diagnoses, particularly in childhood may not be useful due to their overlaps. It advocates for essence centres which could be used to ensure that professionals discuss an individual with each other and better meet the persons needs.
I liked the short chapters but as a result there were limits regarding the detail the book went into. It also uses a lot of anacronyms which may be confusing to a person unfamiliar with such terminology. An interesting and well researched book.

En klinisk bok. Viktigt om att utöka diagnosställandet till hela omfånget av neuropsykiatriska funktionsnedsättningar eftersom individer med NPF ofta har flera. Då måste man se till helheten för att missa något.
