‘She made the weapon her own. It felt comfortable in her hand, a natural extension of her being. It became part of her. She pulled the thick elastic cord back to her chin. This was the moment of complete concentration. She took three controlled breaths, holding the third as she released the ball bearing.  It happened smoothly, one fluid motion, muscle memory and training taking over. She had done this many times.’

Blanks is a book for young readers. It is set in the present and tells the story of an adventurous week in Sam’s school holidays.

Sam lives with his parents and his younger brother in a small village in northern England. He has lived in the village all his life, and he knows everybody. Or so he thought. There is one mysterious girl who has eluded him, until now.

Cycling home one evening, Sam witnesses the girl killing a cat. The adventure that follows throws Sam and the girl into an unlikely friendship, one which will change their lives forever.

Brilliant

This is the 2nd of Matt Shaw books I've read that isn't extreme horror and I must say I loved it. An amazing read and a fantastic storyline. So much so that I'm hoping there will be a sequel to it. I really felt like i was there in the story and could visualise everything happening. A definite must to read. And please Mr Shaw a sequel! If love to know what happens with all these cats communicating and their nasty streak!

Blanks is middle-grade action/adventure— even a little dystopian. It’s a great read, fast-paced with likeable, well defined characters and a story with twists that will take you in unexpected directions on a very different kind of journey.

I think many of us never really grow past the age of middle-grade or YA books. Sure, I read *grown up* books too, but if you’re like me and can still enjoy looking at the world through the eyes of a child, or if you have kids in that age group, I’d definitely recommend Blanks.

The story is set in Yorkshire and as a Canadian, I always love the British style. Matt Shaw has a terrific contemporary voice and an imagination that makes you wonder if he knows something that we don’t.

Looking forward to more from this author.
