Long time ago I had a textbook required in a college Humanities class by Fiero. I believe it was book #6. I have missed any education, beyond the very basic, regarding the first civilization and classical period. After I read 'Rubicon' by Tom Holland, I have been pulled in! Fascinating!
This book was a good overview specifically of 10,000 B.C.E. to 500 C.E. in chronological order covering- world events, literature and philosophy, arts and architecture, & music and dance. It focused on 'search for origins, self and society, meaning of death, quest for self-knowledge--that speaks to the universal aspects of the human condition.' It has wonderful pictures and extracts from literature of that time.
It took me a long time to get through it, and it had great bibliographies to find new books regarding this time period. I bought the first three "Humanistic Tradition" books but will pause before I read the next one. It's a selfish reason why I didn't give it 5 stars- the font on my specific edition (different than shown-my version is 1998 Third Edition) was difficult on my eyes, but if you want a book that give a great overview of time periods, I definitely recommend these books!
This is a textbook for my Humanities course at SNHU. It's a very fascinating course to take. I'm usually not big on history but this book has a lot of interesting facts that I would have liked to take more time to explore. Sadly my course is only 8 weeks long.
