Teen Titans (2003) #3

Teen Titans, Vol. 3: Beast Boys and Girls

Rate this book
The spotlight is squarely focused on Beast Boy in two complete sagas. First, in the days before the current incarnation of the Teen Titans, Beast Boy tries to reignite his stalled acting career only to find himself implicated in a murder. Then, Beast Boy is seemingly cured of his animal shape-changing powers only to see the children of San Francisco suddenly run riot, assuming green animal shapes with no experience and lots of panic. Introduction by Geoff Johns.

I will confess that I have gotten into watching Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network, and I really like the character of Beast Boy. I decided to give these graphic novels a spin and this is the first one I grabbed.

My Observations:

Beast Boy on the cartoon is a lot more wacky than in the book. He looks more childish as well and is of diminutive height. In the books, he's movie star handsome. While not tragic, you can see that he has suffered a lot. Part of Beast Boy's story is one of loss--his birth parents initially and later his adopted family, the Doom Patrol. Ultimately he triumphs over his circumstances and tragedy and manages to maintain sense of good humor and a joy of life. That's infectious.

I wasn't that drawn into the storyline, honestly. It was more mildly interesting than unputdownable. I enjoyed seeing the Teen Titans dynamic on paper, and there is a bit of a crossover with some of the characters of the Young Justice tv show. I've done some research into Teen Titans on the DC Wikia and apparently the teams did sort of blend together throughout the history of the groups. It made me want for the 2nd Season of Young Justice to make it to Netflix (hint, hint). Anyway, I went off on a tangent.

Overall, this is pretty good. More of a cool adjunct to my tv explorations of Teen Titans.

Oof the first half of this book is terrible. It's basically a Garr story but he's pretty much the lamest titan. His Hollywood story is boring and cliche and even nightwing couldn't help it.

Luckily the second half is decent. Story of garr again, which is still boring, but we get alot of cool moments with Tim and Connor, raven and the girls, and Cassie. That saved it from being a total bomb of a volume.

A 2.5 out of 5.

I love BeastBoy. I really do. So I was really looking forward to this. But this just seemed to skim the surface of his story. The deep feelings I know he has about his past and his family and his friends just weren't there.

This was split into 2 parts. The first was him being framed for a murder, and about his ambition to be a star. I've never been a fan of his journey to Hollywood, so since that was a major plot point, that also brought down the rating. That being said, the 2nd part was AWESOME. He was somehow cured of his illness and then everyone else under the age of 13 started getting it and turning into green animals and running rampant through the streets and it was just plain COOL.

I can't wait for more of the series though. Once the rest of the Titans got involved the story really picked up. So hopefully there's more amazingness to come :)

PS, definitely read the Introduction at the front; the way this story was made was really unique.

This series was mostly about Beast Boy, how he came to be what he is and the journey he took before becoming part of the new team of Teen Titans. It was interesting to see Gar in a different way and not as someone so self-confident and immature, but as someone that wasn't sure of himself but knew the right thing to do. Overall, a good story if you want to know a little more about Garfield Logan.

To be totally honest, the only "heroes" I was a fan of growing up was the X-Men. A few years back, Cartoon Network released an "anime" type of series called "Teen Titans". I was an instant fan!

Because I didn't really know the Teen Titans until the Cartoon Network show was released, I didn't really know much about the back story of any of the heroes. I mean, I knew Robin was Batman's sidekick, but the series got me hooked. I started reading this series a while back, but I couldn't find the rest of the series to buy (until I found a local Comic Book Store, that sold them).

The reasons I really enjoyed this graphic novel? I was a big fan of Beast Boy and Raven. The previous vol. introduced you to Raven and gave insight to her past, this vol did that for Beast Boy, Changeling, Garfield Logan, whatever you want to call him. I couldn't put this down until I finished every last page! Not to mention, the artwork is always great in the Teen Titans series!!!

So why only 4 stars? The problem was, unlike the other 2 vols I have read, I found this one, at times, was hard to follow. The speech bubbles didn't always flow, and at times, the story didn't seem to flow either. It was a bit confusing. That being said, don't let that deter you from reading! I recommend it to any Teen Titans fan, only, read the first 2 vols first, to get a sense of how to read graphic novels, they are much easier to follow!

If you're trying to follow the Titans series, this will mostly be treading water for you, as it is mostly a collection of the Beast Boy/Changeling mini-series with a couple Teen Titans issues thrown in.

Still, for those who like the Changeling character, this adds some depth and understanding of why he belongs in the group as more than comic relief.

This was actually kind of cute. A little disjointed because half of the book is a mini from years before, but it provided nice development and depth for Gar Logan.

Always love a Beast Boy-centric story, as he's my favorite Teen Titan. Much more interesting than Wonder Girl or Cyborg.

Book 3. Two stories focusing on Gar Logan AKA Beast Boy AKA Changeling.
The first story, from before this current run of Titans, sees Gar cut loose from the Teen Titans and return to Hollywood in the hopes of reviving his acting career. His efforts are derailed, however, when he finds himself accused of murder and begins to doubt his own memory.
The second story sees Gar mysteriously cured of his powers but then finds kids across San Francisco turning into green animals.

I can't honestly say I've ever given much thought to Beast Boy as a character, his name, power set and visual look all contributing to me writing him off as a goofy comic relief superhero. Here, however, we get the chance to learn a bit more about who he is, where he comes from and what, ultimately, makes him a worthy member of the Titans. It was an experience that I certainly valued and enjoyed.
Over the course of these two stories (one from the late-90s and one from the early-2000s) I developed a much stronger interest and attachment to the character in a way that genuinely made me totally reassess how I felt about him. It's not often a graphic novel manages to fundamentally change how you look at an established superhero, so credit to the writers for that.

Aside from the excellent character work done for Gar, the actual plots of these stories are pretty bland and cliché. The first amounts to 'long-lost child of a supervillain seeks revenge' and the second is an equally unoriginal 'person ruined by hero/hero's family seeks revenge'. Neither of them are outright bad but they're not exactly good either.

Overall it's how much we get to know Beast Boy that makes this book worth reading. If you don't like Beast Boy, then maybe give this a try and see if it changes your mind.

Beast Boy (mini-series). This mini-series is actually badly misplaced, as it's from the previous Titans era, about four years previous to year two of Johns' Titans. But, it's included here presumably because it's Beast Boy-focused and co-authored by Johns. Unfortunately, the four-year- previous Johns, offering up some of his earlier comics work, just isn't that great. We get a dull story of Gar returning to Hollywood and being framed. It's good for its Titans West / Flamewing connections and for its reveal of the big villain at the end, which has nice connections to Gar's history. But otherwise, this is almost entirely forgettable [2+/5].

Beast Boys & Girls (#13-15). Johns giving Gar a spotlight in Teen Titans itself was a good choice, and this is some nice background (returning to the present day, as of course it must), but it just doesn't have the immediacy and interest of the stories about the more beloved characters in Johns' Titans. In fact, the subplots about Superboy and Robin and about Wondergirl and Ares are much more interesting [3+/5].

I’m quite conflicted about how to feel with this one. The entire first half of this volume is a sort of disconnected story focusing on Garfield Logan (Beast Boy/Changeling), which is fine, but it feels so weird where it’s been placed, narratively speaking. It just kind of interrupts the whole overarching plot we’ve gotten so far. The second half, though, is a continuation of the previous volume, which I was excited to see. We get some continuation with previously established elements and some good establishment of other conflicts. I don’t think the first half was bad, per say, and I love he nods to the old Titans and Doom Patrol, but I feel like the whole story dragged on a bit longer than necessary. The second part’s story was fantastic, though. It gave us more stuff I’d expect from a line titled “Teen Titans”, giving us more time with the other characters and how that dynamic impacts everyone’s actions. The plot of the second part put Gar in an interesting situation that really showed us who he is at his core, removed from the whacky circumstances of his life, and that’s a hero.

A much more focused story than other Teen Titans book. Beast Boy is center stage. I prefer the first story that feels more grounded. Nightwing makes an appearance that is well done.

The second story is involved with the team much more but the story is still driven by Beast Boy.

Both these stories are small and feel like they have time to develop. This is different than other TT books but I would have liked for a trend to develop. Each character getting a collection of issues both exploring their background and growing them as a character.

The majority of this volume consists of the 4 issue Beast Boy miniseries Geoff Johns cowrote way before he started the Teen Titans series this trade purports to be part of. That miniseries, about Gar Logan in Hollywood, is not good.
The 3 issues of the proper Titans series that are included are fine, but minor and a drop off from the excellent Brother Blood arc that preceded them. Hopefully volume 4 will get the series back on track.

Another great collection of the Teen Titans.

This one brings old favorite Beast Boy center stage in two wonderful stories. Having been retired from the Teen Titans, he’s back to being Garfield Logan out to make a name for himself in show business. But as he tries to do something for himself he is involved in a horrific series of deaths and is out to find out who’s responsible.

Eventually things turn back to Jump City as he is once again brought front in center as he learns a lot more about his past. Having obtained his powers as a side-effect of being cured of a lethal African virus, he is somehow restored to normal as he learns so much more about his parents and the work they did in curing him and changing him to Beast Boy.

All this and more makes me really appreciate Beast Boy and am so glad that he’s back. Hey this should just be Young Justice and a few of the Original and New Teen Titans.

I really love this series! It's a way different than the TV series that was on Cartoon Network, but like reading The Walking Dead and watching the series, I like seeing how they differ and relate.

In this book, I started off fairly confused. They leave everything that happened with Raven in the last edition on a cliffhanger for a bit and do a filler-like story on Beast Boy. Now I enjoyed reading about good ol' Beast Boy, but still had the "what about Raven!?!? Get back to the story line!" going on in the back of my head. They do return to the story line in the last half of the book thankfully :)

Not much else more to say aside from I really enjoy these books and can't wait to read more (hopefully with a little less filler-stories)!

Beast Boy battles a doppelganger while trying to get back into Hollywood and then suffers a setback after being accused of infecting other children with his disease. The collection reprints the Beast Boy series from before the Teen Titans series, which by itself wasn't bad. The Beast Boy series doesn't make entire sense when it is combined with the Teen Titans series which always portrays Gar as a younger character. The Teen Titan story arc almost seems repetative and goes too long.

There were two very well written stories that centered around Beast Boy. The first follows Beast Boy being accused of murder in Hollywood after he tried to revive his acting career. He got some help from Flamebird, a former member of the Teen Titans West and Nightwing.

While the second story found him losing both his abilities and his green coloring that were some how transferred to the children in San Francisco.

If you're a Beast Boy fanatic then this volume is a must-read.
I loved Justiniano's artwork in the Beast Boy story in the first half of the trade.. very Bachelo/Tony Daniel-esque. The Teen Titans story was pretty fun with a girl Robin and an evil scientist ripping off his face to reveal his crazy purple scaly skin. Gotta love mad scientists!
