I have a "thing" for the poetry of the 1970s lately and this hits the spot. It was published in 1976. You can see language poetry gathering its bones together here, ready to launch, but most of the authors are off on other vibes. Some of it gets a little dippy, hippy-trippy but that's the fun of 1976. Interesting inclusion of different voices but could have used more POC authors since so much great essential writing was coming from there in the 70s. Lorenzo Thomas is here but that's about it. Queer authors are well-represented. Joe Brainard's funny timeline guessing at his life and date of death is so plangent when you realize we now know exactly where to place the dot of his disappearance. Lally is an interesting figure. I had no idea he had a side hustle as an actor and is known for playing memorable street characters on television crime dramas. Would be great if he wrote a book of poems about that.

All the poets highlighted in this collection are impressive...I accidentally found this book in my highschool library. It hadn't been checked out in YEARS (YEARS & YEARS!). I thought it would live better with me. I'm not promoting theft. At the time I was 16 years old and became emotionally attached to things so easily. Taking it made perfect sense in my mind. Anyway, my point: if you are a Darrell Gray fan, you will greatly appriciate his contribution to this collection. I love "The Poem Machine" & his description about himself and his daily regimen...its hilariously entertaining!
