As babies grow, their routines and patterns change. In The Contented Toddler Years , Gina addresses the many changes in sleeping and feeding habits that arise during the second and third year. She offers invaluable advice and insight into these crucial stages of a child's development, from walking and talking, to teething and potty training, and also shows you how to deal with tantrums, food refusal, and sibling jealousy; prepare for the arrival of a second baby, including how to cope physically, emotionally and financially, and how to adapt her routines when caring for a baby and toddler; make teeth-cleaning fun and put an end to habits such as thumb-sucking, nail-biting, and eating dirt; and decide what type of childcare is best for you and your toddler. Gina's advice is derived from hands-on experience of dealing with children. Parents can be confident that her techniques, which have been tried and tested many times and have proved successful with many different children, can also work for them. She has listened to the concerns of thousands of parents via her consultations and website. Reassuring and down-to-earth, parents will find Gina's advice can help make the passage from contented baby to confident child a happy and stress-free experience for the whole family.
This book gave me an unrealistic expectation of what a newborn would be like. Coupled with my 1950's style health visitor telling me to make the baby wait 4 hours between feeds during those first weeks, absolutely ruined my first baby experience, she cried and cried and cried and I was so tired from sticking to the rigorous routine that I cried a lot too. The second time round I didn't have a routine that was so rigid, I fed when he cried, picked him up and held him and nurtured him....what an absolute load of shit! She doesn't even have any children! Trust your instincts and go with the baby's pace xx
The Contented Toddler Years is the sequel to Gina Ford’s New Contented Little Baby Book, which discusses how to care for toddlers between the ages of 1 and 3. It covers topics such as dealing with a toddler and a new baby, eating and sleeping problems and teaching them good habits.
Having used the routines in the first book to good effect with our 9-month old, I was interested to read this. There is some sensible advice here, and although some of it is a little old fashioned it broadly hits the mark. I was reassured by the emphasis on being responsive to your child and finding a solution that manages their behaviour, especially from an author who is sometimes accused of being too rigid.
The sections on suggested routines with a baby and a toddler are a useful pointer for managing two at once, which is probably the most valuable part of the book. My main criticism was that most of the other advice was rather banal, without enough detail. The chapters on potty training and dealing with a second baby fall into this category, and should be seen as an overview rather than a comprehensive solution.
In sum, there is nothing wrong with this book, but there may be better books out there for this subject.
