A treasury of fantasy by an author whose fiction ranges through the mythologies of major cultures of the world includes The Secret Mountain and Other Tales and other stories never before reprinted or published under a pseudonym.
Kenneth Vennor Morris - sometimes using the Welsh form of his name Cenydd Morus - was a Welsh author and theosophist. Born in South Wales, he moved to London with his family as a child, and was educated at Christ's Hospital. In 1896 he lived in Dublin for a while, where he became friends with George William Russell. From 1908 to 1930 Morris lived in California as a member of staff of the Theosophical Society headquarters at Point Loma. The last seven years of his life were spent back in his native Wales, during which time he founded seven Welsh theosophical lodges. Morris was a friend of Talbot Mundy, and the two writers often commentated on each other's work in The Theosophical Path magazine.
Astonished at the low rating as this is stylistically brilliant writing. Granted its slow placed and deep, so if you like Harry Potter its probably not for you, but its also readable fantasy on the fairly superficial level
If you like this older more lyrical style you will probably love this collection of fantasy tales. But his style of story and retellings of myths and fables is a bit too dry for my tastes. You really need to sit with each word to appreciate it but in the end most of these short stories were too short. Many of them if he had stretched them a page or two more could have had a little better structure.
The Welsh author Kenneth Morris was a brilliant writer of early 20th century fantasy. This volume edited by Douglas A Anderson offers all of KM's short stories which range from fantasy stories based on Welsh myths and legends to other myths and there be dragons here! Some of the best I think are his really early short stories which are included at the end of the book. Highly recommend and can't wait to explore with Douglas Anderson this autumn in The Mythguard Institute Roots of the Mountain - Tales before Tolkien course at http://www.mythgard.org
