About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

This is an interesting collection. Normally you don’t read these stories together. They are some of the most well known though, so it is very enjoyable. You get to see Holmes solve gruesome murders, comic mix-ups, and locked-room mysteries.
Edward Hardwicke makes an excellent narrator. I have enjoyed the Holmes TV series he played Watson in. Having him read all the stories was really enjoyable.

I am slowly listening to all the volumes of Sherlock Holmes in order. These were good stories.

This digital audio loan was only intended as a stopgap but turned out to be too satisfying to just cast aside. Edward Hardwicke's reading was part of that enjoyment, he does a wonderfully growly Holmes. But the stories themselves were fascinating, twisty yes but also throwing light on the concerns of the age in which they were written. Different in form perhaps but with similar themes to modern day difficulties - addictions, debts. And it was salutary to note what might be described as the lack of resilience of many of the characters, how powerfully they were affected by things which happened to them - there were brain fevers and swoons all over the shop - which rather gave the lie to things which are said about people today being less emotionally robust for whatever reason.

The stories on this playaway are delightful. Of course, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" has always been a personal favorite of mine. I also quite enjoyed "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire." I love Sherlock Holmes in all his superior skills and smug demeanor. I kept getting distracted on one or two of the stories but other than that I found this a very pleasant listening experience.

If you have enjoyed the acting talents of Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson in the BBC television series with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, you will undoubtedly also enjoy these stories from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, narrated by Hardwicke. An epitome of mystery of all time. Valley of Fear is a gripping thriller and the case study has the most singular and interesting short cases.

Loved it and the adventures of Sherlock Holmes never requires any recommendation.
