Better to Forget

"Grant, how well did I know you?" Liza waited anxiously for his answer. She couldn't remember Grant Latham - or anything else. She had been told that she'd had an accident; that there had been a fire; and that she had worked for Grant Latham - nothing else. Grant had said he felt indirectly responsible for her present condition. But Liza felt sure that he meant her amnesia - not the wild beating of her heart whenever he was near!

Okay this book was going along as a maybe three star read, perhaps a four but then it all went to heck. Amnesia is not my favorite trope but it is what it is. This young girl, Liza, put out a fire with some couturier dresses and her hands. The H who had just met her fell into insta something, i can't call it love, and so he took over her life. He visited her everyday in the hospital, but there was no sponging, and she became dependent on him especially when it was discovered that she had the dreaded amnesia trope. The rest of the book was just him basically kidnapping her and taking her into his country house where there was an albino step brother (okay he wasn't albino but his description was downright albino) and his Step Mother who was psychotic or nice or just whacked. It was just an odd atmosphere and I was just confused as to why that step brother was in there at all. He was a writer whose wife had died and he had writers block and was profoundly strange. I thought love triangle but it really didn't happen and he started writing because of the h and then the h went back to London and he couldn't write anymore, so the Step Mother begged her to come back, but she wouldn't and then, I don't know what happened. That story was just left unresolved. There was also the H's other woman a Ms. Courtland who everyone thought they would marry but was never explained why he was seeing her and the h at the same time. Another hanging thread. There was so much more but my battery is dying so I will have to save and come back. Needless to say the h is confused because the H who had doted on her now hates her and lusts after her and she doesn't know why. Well it seems when he was holding her hostage he read her diary and misinterpreted what she wrote and decided she was a slut that aborted a child from an ex lover and he hated her but lusted after her but hated her but lusted.... You get my point. He tries to make her his mistress but she kicks him out and decides to move on. It wasn't her but her Father and his girlfriend and she explained it to him the next day when he chased her down at his store. Of course he says I always loved you to her and presto chango, all is well in the land of 'Nofreakingway'. It went down to two stars simply because it left so many hanging threads and also the fact that the Hero was intermittently bipolar. As were his step relatives. Medication recommended for everyone.

Amnesia romance. She was a 19 years old orphan working in the couture and woman's department in a fancy department store. He owned the place. It was hate at first sight. She ended up in the hospital the day they met due to fire burn and lost her memories. He became the knight in shining armor with a bit of an attitude.

Overall, a pleasant read.

Is it really Pargeter?
It’s so boring.

A young shop assistant is disgusted when she sees her new employer’s attitude towards his step-mother. Her employer reprimands and as a punishment, she is denied her lunch break. While she is alone in the shop, a fire breaks out, leaving her injured with severe amnesia.
The H is the only person who visits daily and the h clings to him. He then takes her to his estate to recover, where she encounters a hostile stepmother and a spoiled step-brother.
The H acts as though her past conceals a secret far more sinister than her late father's having an affair with a married woman, who might have been pregnant with his child.

Starts well enough. Middle becomes boringly dragging with no resolution nor reasoning in sight. Very very end (in fact, last couple of pages) is the place you finally know what was going on.
Not a well planned book as far as usage of pages concerned.

I found it quite bizarre how the alpha Hero took charge of the heroine's life... sure she's amnesiac and she has no family but it just it didnt click for me Apart from acting strange/enigmatic most of the time, I found the Hero simply too controlling, (and I just hate brutal bruising hurtful kisses) while the heroine was too pathetic....The ending better explains everything though. Just an ok read, in my opinion.

3 Stars ~ A romance from the 70's, with an innocent heroine and a white knight hero with a chip on his shoulder.

Liza is 20, recently orphaned and alone in London. She's still adjusting from the shock of her father's tragic death and her horrible last words spoken to him. She's lucky to get a job in the women's department in London's largest department store. Tending to be shy, she does most of her work behind the huge racks of women's clothing, and has witnessed the store's owner reprimanding a co-worker. On the day this story starts, Liza thinks her employer has been harsh with his step-mother bringing her close to tears. Unable to control her expression of disdain, Liza becomes the target of his sharp tongue which results in her losing her lunch break. A small fire starts in the change cubicles and alone in her department no one hears her cry for help. When others finally come, Liza has nearly put out the fire, singeing her clothes and hair and burning her hands. They find her in shock, swaying and then falling hitting her head.

Grant had worked hard building up the store he inherited into a chain of department stores throughout England, with his flagship in London. Now at 36, he's beginning to want someone to share the fruits of all that work. When he sees Liza he's taken with her and while reprimanding her, learns from her very expressive face that she has a backbone. Then the fire happens and he finds himself steadfast at her hospital bed. For two weeks Liza is heavily sedated due to her burns, but when she awakens she's lost all memory of the accident and of her life before it. Learning that Liza is has no family, Grant takes over, first with the private hospital room and then sweeps her off to his home in the country for her convalesce. The doctors believe that Liza's memory loss could be her mind desperately trying to forget something from her past.

Until the mid-80's it was rare to have male point of view in a Harlequin. As a result, some heroes come off harsh and arrogant. I would so have loved Grant's POV. While the he does confess all his emotions at the end of the story, we only had rare glimpses of them earlier in the story. As Liza's memories awaken, Grant also awakens in her the desires of a woman. It's a struggle, both for Grant who wants more than gratitude from Liza, and for Liza who wants nothing more than Grant's love.

This is the first book I've read written by Ms. Pargeter. I can now understand why she is a favorite author to so many.
