Conundrum

Rate this book
What could go wrong?Alex Hutton had plans for his life, which included the big city and a job at a high-end newspaper. Now he was packing his suitcases and moving back to his hometown that was one step away from a ghost town. The only positive thing about it was that the man he’d always loved was now practicing medicine there; he just didn’t know if the young doctor liked women or men. He was stuck publishing a two-page local newspaper and taking care of his father, who was recovering from a car accident. He didn’t know that there was a mystery surrounding his hometown, one he never conceived. A strange cloud of death had beckoned several of the town’s residents to its door. That isn’t unusual in itself, but as Alex delves into the distant past, the strange and unusual becomes more commonplace than he or anyone had known. Caught in the middle of secret societies and whispers of strange things, Alex will walk straight into the world of conspiracy theories, danger, and the unknown.

Wasn't sure quite what to expect from this one as it is by a new author to me. I hoped the mystery and romance would be as well balanced as the blurb led me to expect. I don't mind of one predominates, but I was in the mood for a nice mystery. This one absolutely delivered. I loved the characters of Alex and David and it was interesting at the beginning to watch Alex have to find out if David might be interested in him romantically. They make a great couple both personally and professionally as they start to try to unravel the mystery as their newspaper and medical backgrounds are both required in the search for answers. I am a big sucker for secret society stories both fictional and non-fictional and the ones in this story are very well drawn and interesting. I will definitely be looking for future books from this author who knows how to write a compelling mystery and a great, believable m/m romance.

Nothing is as it appeared

Alex had to return to his small hometown after 4 years of college in Kansas City after his Father had been injured in a car accident and needed Alex to run the small local newspaper. He loved his Father and it was just the two of them since his Mother had passed away so he couldn't refuse and at least David, who he had secretly loved for years and who had been his best friend since elementary school was back in town as well. He could never of foreseen his cat Fluffy bringing a women's finger to him just four weeks later or everything that would happen afterwards. They had alot of things to learn... everything would depend on it.
MM, romance, fantasy, adventure, sci-fi, paranormal, pageturner, fantastic story captivating throughout, I absolutely loved it.

A decent attempt at writing a fantasy story. I've not read anything by this author previously, but I was quite impressed by this attempt. Both MCs are likeable, especially David, and I liked the premise of the story. It was unusual, and exciting in parts. However, what spoiled the whole thing for me was the poor editing. I do recommend that the author edits more carefully, or hires an editor. There were a few mistakes, which pulled me out of the story. Still, a good effort, and I am interested in discovering what happens next.

This was the first time I had ever read anything by this author. I seriously loved the mystery to the story! Alex comes back to town to help his ailing father. He left to be a big journalist. His friend David is still in town and is now a doctor. I loved how they try to solve the mystery. This was a captivating read for me, loved it! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.

Conundrum is the first I've read by this author.
The mystery and intrigues of this type of book usually keep my attention. I'm sorry to say that Conundrum did not do that. There is no flow, the POV is not consistent, and the writing style was not easy to read. I like the premise and feel that it could be a fantastic read, just as David and Alex would shine in a more polished version of this book.

Great start for the series. Alex and David are a great couple to follow for this murder mystery. I loved how their romance weaved into the main plot and I wanted this to be so much longer because I didn't want it to end. Can't wait for the next. I voluntarily reviewed an 'Advance Author’s Copy' of this book.

Very unique and interesting.

This was a very unique read and it had a lot of interesting aspects to it. I loved the concept but it confused me too. My main issue was the POV it was written. It felt mixed and I couldn’t connect to the characters much. I do know that it would have been great longer with more build up. I still want to read more about this world the author created.

Promising

The concept behind this story is great and I liked Alex a lot.
However I would say that it does need some revision for continuity errors and inconsistencies. It does also shift pov mid paragraph.
That being said, there was a lot of story and it was fast paced to put in all in a novella

DNF @ 27%

I felt like the story was a bit disconnected/disjointed.
I didnt connect with Alex. At times the story contradicted itself. The only place to drink coffee is a one room restraunt, then on the same page, mentions a cafe for coffee.

Sinister secrets

To be honest, this book is a conundrum. I liked the mystery but I’m still confused by the characters and everything that happened. Perhaps I’m channeling Alex and David and their peculiar experiences.

Conundrum is a mix between a mystery and a romance. The book is ok, but I didn't connect with the characters, and the POV got confusing at times. The story is fast-paced and interesting.
