After reading about the crusades in my kids history book (Story of the World), I was curious and wanted to know more. I checked this out at our local library and found it to be quite interesting. Pretty sure I never knew half of what I read...and the fact that there were children's crusades. Sad.

I realized recently that I did not know enough about the Crusades and so have decided to start reading about them.

The first thing that is abundantly clear is that the Crusades would never have happened, if the Church of the time had not made assurance of forgiveness reliant on going to Jerusalem. By elevating places, buildings, and objects to a level they are not, the Church created an atmosphere ripe for issues. Essentially, the relics became of ultimate importance. Even Jerusalem was elevated to a height it didn't belong at. In making things "holy" you make it essential to the religion. This was a major flaw in the Church of the time.

Another thing that I always have to keep in mind when I read about conflict and war is this: BOTH sides do terrible things. Both sides commit atrocities and both sides bear blame for a conflict occurring in the first place. A conflict cannot occur on only one side.

It will definitely be interesting to read more about this topic. This book was a nice introduction because it was fairly short, read almost like a story, yet was very factual.
