How did one go from not noticing a person for two whole years to being obsessed in a few weeks? Darius Udeng should have only been concerned about the devious, yet unknown, competitor trying to discredit his top notch security company; threatening, so far, the biggest deal Secure Inc. has ever had. However, a chance encounter where his secretary kissed him thinking he was a stranger had him tying her to him with a contract as his mistress for a month. As the deadline approached, Darius felt reluctant letting Nsikan go even as he suspected she’d been selling out client details to the competitor.
Emem Bassey loves romance in all its forms. She writes what she terms a hybrid romance - love stories with bits and pieces of other genres. All her stories carry plus size heroines and she staunchly believes the world is filled with tragedy, so she writes to entertain and lighten hearts. Emem lives at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and is basically a ghost to her neighbors.
Very hot 🥵 and steamy 💦 A work place romance that’s full of spice! Darius is a grumpy hero and Nsikan the timid secretary. He wants her and makes her sign a contract to be his exclusively for a month. Of course, with the passion that blazes between them, one month is not enough. A spicy 🌶️ romance read !
This author has fast become one that is an auto buy, auto TBR-jumper whenever she releases a new book. This came out only 2-3 days ago and I immediately had to read it. On the balance of it, I liked it but the version I had does have a few teething issues.
The premise of this dark erotic romance is that former Nigerian Navy Officer and SSS Officer (Nigerian version of the FBI), Darius is a huge butthole, whose buttholery is not helped by his bitter divorce and general sense of entitlement. When he unexpectedly hooks up with his secretary, Nsikan, all this changes but he can’t afford to let his guard down when someone is out to destroy his business and can trust no one.
This excels in two major areas, the sexy times and the overall plot. The mystery angle is not super twisty but it is well-executed. The back and forth, hot and cold between Nsikan and Darius is also well-done, totally buyable in the fact that they’re soooo... lusty for each other. As always this author writes larger-bodied heroines who are significantly plus sized and not in the just for the sake of mentioning it way like how you would say a heroine was blonde or had long hair, it is relevant to the fashion, the thinking, the sexing, and realistic to the experience of existing and thriving and enjoying oneself in a larger body. If constant interactions between the heroine and her size bother you, this might not be the book for you. The largeness of Nsikan’s body is intrinsic to her sexiness in this book as part of it and it is emphasized in every encounter so it’s best if you’re “here for it.” I was hear for it and I was fine. This book is EXTREMELY spicy so prepare your eyebrows and gird your loins because “ooooh wweeeee!”
For me this was let down in two areas. One was the editing, I think it needs an extra layer of proofing because there were quite a few typos and homophone-level errors take away some of the luster from an otherwise really entertaining and well-executed dark erotic romance. In fairness, I got this within hours of publication so it is possible I got an early, not fully-proofed version so make sure to check it out yourself. My other issue with this was the villainisation/“bi*chization of skinny people in this romance and the low key dragging of their boniness. It wasn’t malicious or anything, and the characters were truly evil, but the evil was linked to their skinniness just the way authors of the past used to link greed and slovenliness and lack of sex appeal to being fat. I didn’t really like that and it didn’t sit well with me. It’s not a major component of this and definitely shouldn’t stop you from reading it, but it exists especially if you might be triggered by it.
When this author first talked about this retired navy series, I was really excited because Nigerian military romance isn’t something that exists enough and I’m not let down by this super sexy dark romance. We don’t get that much militaryness, but we do get a super stern, super rude and disrespectful hero who gets his comeuppance à la dark romance. If you’re not a dark romance reader, Darius might bother you, if you are, you will enjoy this. I’m somewhere in between when it comes to dark romance and I liked this and could bear Darius but YMMV. I’m still fanning myself from the heat and spice of this. If you want to read a dark erotic romance featuring a plus size heroine and a rude, broody jerk sort with A LOT of spice and sexiness tied to the heroine’s larger body, I recommend this one for sure. Can’t wait to read Matt and Jane’s story and to see Matt get his just desserts!
Fair Odds is a story about Darius Udeng, an ex-Naval officer, who after a kiss from a voluptuous beauty was distracted enough to notice it was his personal assistant, Nsikan aka Niskan at the same time that he discovers that there’s a mole in the office and decides to keep his ‘enemy’ closer. Nsikan is shocked to find that the man she kissed in an attempt to escape her ex is her boss. He makes her an offer she can’t refuse but her last relationship had left her self-conscious.
This is a clear case of taming the shrew. Here’s an insecure Nsikan still nursing old wounds while daydreaming of her obnoxious boss. A kiss to save her pride in a club turns the table and she’s entering a contract to be a mistress.
This book has lust, sex, and is in subtle trailer mode.
It started so well and made me want more. It’s an enjoyable read and I would have loved to see more of the thriller aspect that was introduced at the beginning of the story e.g. the sabotage and the Navy.
Oh wow, this author never disappoints. Seriously, she never fails🥹🥹 I absolutely loved this book. I'm always hooked on enemies-to-lovers, grumpy-sunshine, and office romance stories. This was such a great read, I couldn’t put it down.
Fair Odds was a great read!! This book had the drama, mystery and heat. Nsikan and Darius keep me laughing and I loved watching them fell in love. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.
