Douglas Macarthur had an incredible 2nd wife, named Jean, who never left her husband's side following him into war zones and making daring escapes.

General Macarthur was humble and courageous and saved the lives of his men. Many generals are filled with hubris and narcistic thinking only of themselves and not that of a private Ryan.
Not so with Macarthur. His soldiers would kill 10 of the enemy before 1 of Macarthur's men got shot down.

Macarthur was appointed by President Truman as the most powerful leader in Japan. He brought equality to Japan 🇯🇵 like they had never seen in its history and showed incredible mercy and grace when many others wanted revenge. This is what made Macarthur such a powerful leader. Because of how well Macarthur ruled over Japan gaining tremendous respect from the Japanese in how kindly he treated his enemies, especially women in giving them job equality, allowing 2,000 women to enter the police force.

Based on how well and beloved he was in Japan as their leader, it can be argued that he would have been a greater president in the US over the man who had been a small assistant in his office... Dwight D. Eisenhower.

I like the character but the actual book was a little slow, needed more conversing, and more 3D characters 🤪🙂

When I started listening to this I really wasn't too interested. However the farther it progressed the more invested I became. Douglas Macarthur was a highly courageous general and commander during countless battles and fights. I had never heard his name before this and now I have huge respect for him.
In true biography fashion, it covers his entire life, birth to death. I was surprised to find myself interested in the battles he fought (normally I am not at all).
I am a teenage girl, I would recommend this for teenagers 13+ and adults. It does mention battle details and deaths but nothing graphic.

What a hero! I loved reading about Douglas MacArthur's life and wish we had more like him. I admire his tenacity, strength and courage.

What amazed me was how many battles he was in and how many bullets were meant for him - and yet his life was spared every single time. It reminded me that we do not need to live in fear - according to the Bible, our days are numbered from before we were born! Live with courage and passion. Do the work God has assigned for you without fear.

I reviewed this book for a teacher and was surprised how much I liked it. I knew very little about MacArthur and it has made me more interested in the events that took place in Asia and the South Pacific during WW2.

hard to imagine having any feelings about a book so feelingless
it feels as if i glanced over the wikipedia page, actually less than that, very surface level with not much deep diving.

Informative. It has moments of action, as well as dry spells, but my daughter (11) and I enjoyed this book. We learned about WWII in the Pacific.

An excellent recap of the life of one of America's more interesting soldiers, especially in the modern era. This biography is written with reference to original sources, rather than the fictions and assumptions which so easily passes for some of the shoddy "scholarship" foisted on the world today, where political positions are substituted for facts.

Douglas McArthur was a fascinating man whose life seemed to lead inevitably to the many dramatic situations in which he found himself. The background of his family life helps to put in perspective many of the choices he made.

His life and choices are more complex than one may expect in the two-dimensional world of history as it is taught today. It also puts the lie to the claims of the "evil" United States expanding through a policy of imperialism.

How this man dealt with the nations of the Philippines and Japan both prior to and subsequent to the Second World War are enlightened and enlightening. This is especially true when one remembers that this is the story of a career soldier whose entire life is devoted to the military, even at great personal expense.

Histories such as this should be taught in the schools today to give our current students a better understanding of how this country rose to the position of power it once enjoyed, even if it is only a shadow of such a world power today.

Eminently readable, and highly educational and entertaining.
