Buddy is an eight-year-old goldendoodle who loves to play hide-and-seek . . . at least he used to. Buddy is losing his vision and can't do many of his favorite activities anymore. So when he comes to Doggie Daycare, Shawn and Kat try to find something that will bring the old Buddy back. What will it take to get Buddy's tail wagging again? Doggie Daycare is open for business. Join siblings Shawn (9) and Kat (7) Choi as they start their own pet-sitting service out of their San Francisco home. Every dog they meet has its own special personality, sending the kids on fun (and furry) adventures all over the city!

Book title: Library Buddy
Author: Carol Kim
Illustrator: Felia Hanakata

Reading Level: LG
Book Level: 4.0

Summary: Kat and her brother Shawn take care of Buddy, an elderly golden doodle who is losing his vision. They learn that Buddy loves to be read to. The kids sign up for a summer reading challenge at the library and begin to read books to Buddy to hopefully win the challenge.

Bookshelf mentor writing traits:

Presentation - clear print with large text size. Text is uniform throughout the book. Spacing is consistent. Margins are sized appropriately. Text is effectively placed on the page and supplemented with relevant illustrations.

Other suggestions:

I would assign this reading and then utilize the "Think About It" section at the end of the book. This section prompts the reader to reflect on the story. The first prompt asks students to think about a time they were teased and how it made it them feel (similar to how the character Joshua teases Kat). The second prompt encourages students to create their own reading challenge. The third and final prompt asks students to research service dogs and explain different jobs that dogs can do. These prompts are useful for extending learning beyond the initial reading and would aid students in enhancing their comprehension of the text.
