I haven't hunted in many years now. I had a job that required a lot of time and the support of my family and day to day life sort of pushed out door activity out of my mind. I always thought I'd get back into the woods, camp out and enjoy the outdoors after I retired. It hasn't worked out that way as physically I'm not able to do any of those things anymore. I camped out a single night two years ago and just getting to the sight was all I could do. My son and two of his friends wanted me to go. I still hold hope that I'll get more use of my body back, but who knows.

I do know this, I still love the outdoors and yes I still love animals. Now I can hear many who may have the anti-hunting bug screaming at that. But it's true and I believe most "true hunters" do hold a love and respect for wildlife and the outdoors close.

Give this book a chance (and there are others like it) if you just would like to know about white tale deer. Be sure and read the chapter on ethics.

Hunting is far more than just killing an animal. I have spent many hours in the field tracking or simply scouting that did not lead toa kill, and maybe wasn't even intended to. Hunting camps are places where friendship and camaraderie grows and thrives.

So, learn about deer, enjoy the wisdom and stories that surrounds them and hold on to this way of life just a little longer.

This book is really more of a collection of 1-5 page articles and essays than a cohesive book. The stories cover a variety of topics, from practicalities of whitetail habits and habitat, to whimsical and warm-hearted recollections from hunting camp. Packed full of material that references academic studies, and many years of accumulated experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, especially in the week leading up to my first whitetail hunt in Wyoming. I hope I can apply some of the wisdom. I particularly enjoy the articles by Larry Weishuhn. Since I've seen him on TV many times I can imagine his friendly demeanor and grandfatherly mien.

An informative work on whitetail deer, managing their environment, and hunting them. I would consider this a good beginers book for the the layman. It is easy to read and presents basic informatiion.
