Poison Apple Books: Thrilling. Bone-chilling. These books have bite! Casey Slater can't believe her bad luck. It's the summer before seventh grade, and instead of the perfect vacation she'd planned with her best friend, Casey is in a remote country town, where her parents are restoring an old, creaky, creepy house. Worst of all, everyone else in town thinks the old house is haunted. And soon Casey thinks so, too -- a vase explodes, a heavy china cabinet falls over on its own -- and it seems like the ghost doesn't want them there. Casey thought she'd be dying of boredom, but now she's scared to death!"
Mimi McCoy was a cheerleader the same year that Halley's Comet was last seen, an accomplishment she attributes to cosmic fortune, since she never made the team again. Ms. McCoy has since traded in her pompoms for a pen and now lives in New York City.
A cute creepy story about a girl who has to spend the whole summer in the middle of nowhere. But it's not boring, there's something going on - ghosts maybe? Only Casey Slater knows it but her parents don't believe her - of course, when you don't want to listen to your children, it is enough to tell them they are imagining things. Casey's parents were going on my nerves the whole time, they never believed what their daughter told them, for God's sake they've never even shown their love to her, in any way. Oh my God, what kind of monsters are you and who let you have kids... and finally why write about such people who don't deserve anything or anybody but themselves. Thank God, Casey is a nice girl and I liked her and her battle with ghosts.
I devoured this in a day! A day! I couldn't put it down and I'm so happy I enjoyed it so much because I've been wanting to read this for yeeeaaars! I finally said enough, it's time I start this series! All the books in this series are standalone but I just had to start with the first one.
The Dead End is about a girl that moves into a summer home in the country with her family. Throughout the summer her parents are busy making the place look nice while Casey has to find ways to entertain herself. As the days go by unexplainable things happen around Casey and of course her parents don't believe her when she tells them. Which is why she finds comfort in a diary she found that belonged to a young girl who lived there in the 30's, who also went through what Casey is going through. That is until the diary entries just end and Casey has a bad feeling something happened to the girl and it's going to happen to her too.
Honestly as the pages started to get smaller I didn't know where this story was going to go. But once all the pieces fell together I was in awe in how beautifully written this was! It was brilliantly woven in my eyes because I honestly didn't see that ending coming and how it all tied in with the girl from the past! Well done, Mrs. McCoy! I loved it and I can't wait to continue the Poison Apple series! For this being aimed for Middle Schoolers I didn't at all feel too old reading it, felt Casey was pretty mature once things started to happened and she had to deal with it all on her own.
Poison Apple is a more spookier and paranormal version of the Candy Apple series. I never read any Poison Apple book except this one. And I was scared! I know i know its a book how can you?
This book i finished within a day or two. I could NOT put it down! Casey Slater is just an average seventh grader wanting to have a great summer vacation with her best friend. But her parents take her to an unforgetable vacation.
Her and her parents drive down to a house that they will be staying in for the summer. Of course Casey did not want to go. When they arrived weird things began to happen. There was a ghost in the house. Casey recieved a message on the mirror saying "Get Out!" she told her parents thinking they will understand but they did not.
Casey found a Diary that belonged to a girl that stayed there around the 1930's. Casey read it and realized the same things were happening to her as it did the other girl. And it wasnt just Casey that thought this house was haunted. It was the whole neighboorhood.
I don't want to say anymore but you have to read this!We teenagers can light weight relate to this because our parents never listen or understand us. We are UNFATHOMABLE ;) It is a pretty average sized book and I am sure you will love it. I was under the blanket the whole time thinking a ghost will write something on my mirror.
Casey gets ready to have a fun summer with Jillian but her plans are cancelled by her parents because they bought a haunted house in New Hampshire.Casey then goes through a lot of things that she couldn't really explain until she finds a diary written by Millie who died in a steamer trunk. Both Millie and Casey have dreams that connect to the other's situation.Millie dreams about a fire happening in Casey's time and Casey dreams of playing hide-and-seek in Millie's time.It ends up that the things that happened was done by Millie's 'spirit' to protect Casey and get her away from the house that was to be on fire.
An awesome book about a girl that discovers a ghost that lives in her summer house. I love love loved it!!! To all of my friends and classmates out there you have to read this book! It chills your bones. This is like my trip to Bangladesh. I thought it would be boring but I had an awesome time! I rode a horse, fell off and brige, played with a chicken, and meet a bull.
Bomb! stupid pre-teen idiocy! read the beginning, skimmed the middle and read the end. this is a thriller, horror story made for 12 - 16 yr olds. the first 3 pages in did frighten me. the writer does a very good job wording and showing scary stuff. the next 3 pages in; i had to sit through a 12 yr old thinking her parents where the stupidest people on the planet and believing her friend had all the answers. i know teenagers feel this way anyway, but do authors have to promote it? skimming through the middle i picked up enough to understand the ending. scary, dreadful things happen and i would not let my pre teen or teen read this.
Millie Hugh wrote how she is just thrilled for her birthday party in her old diary that she had in the 1930’s. Casey Slater finds the diary from 80 years ago in her new house. She has one question, why did Millie just stop writing in her diary on her birthday that she was so excited about? Casey recalls names of people Millie wrote about that went to her birthday party and she immediately goes seeking those people. But, will Casey find them and answer her question if Millie is dead or still alive? In my opinion, this is a wonderful book. My eyes were glued to the book the whole time and I didn’t want to put it down.
I just read this book together with my nine year old daughter. We were both scared, and the twists and turns of the book kept us snuggled up on the bed. I did not think this book would be so creepy, and I enjoyed it very much. My daughter loved it so much that she reread it a second time this weekend, and now she's convinced her brother to read it as a perfect get-ready-for-Halloween book. We're looking forward to reading more of this series.
I enjoyed this book and it was a fun and quick read! At first, I wasn’t sure of it and there were moments when I disliked Casey towards the beginning but I came to like her and all the other characters. Though, I wish this book had been a little longer than it was to show what happened after that night and all that. But I did enjoy this book and it was a fun short read, though I know this is probably for much younger kids. But I grew up enjoying a couple of these other books and wanted just a few quick reads. Which I’d recommend for a kid or if you just wish for a short and quick read!
It’s been a decade since I last read this book, yet I remembered every aspect of it. (Probably because I read it so many times 😅) The poison Apple Books all have my heart but The Dead End will always be my favourite. It’s just the perfect spooky read for this season, even if it is a children’s book. ❤️
Scholastic goes Goth, or at least dark and scary. This new series by Scholastic Press has some great potential - it looks like a dark off-shoot of their popular Candy Apple Books. This new series from Poison Apple Books starts with 2 out this spring, one in August and another in the fall and it looks amazing. I have read advance copies of the first two and they were great.
Casey Slater had her summer all planned out. She and her best friend knew what they would be doing all summer long and they would be doing it together. Then a few weeks before the end of school her parents tell her they have a surprise. Her parents bought a house in the middle of nowhere in New Hampshire, just outside Stillness. Her parents plan to restore this old creaky and creepy house. Everyone in town believes the house is haunted and soon so does Casey. She finds the diary from a girl who lived there 70 years earlier, Millicent Amelia Hughes, and while reading the journal, finds out Millicent's story and her own apprehension of being haunted are eerily similar. China cabinets fall over, vases explode, and all the electrical devices go on before the house has power. These and other events lead Casey to believe the house is haunted, and that maybe Millicent is out to get her. But things are not always as they appear. To quote the back of the book: "Casey thought she'd be dying of boredom, but now she's scared to death!"

Casey Slater and her best friend, Jillian Morton, have their whole summer planned out, and it is going to be the best summer of their lives.
So, when Casey's parents tell her that they have purchased a summer house in Stillness, New Hampshire, far away from their home in Manhattan, she is devastated. What will she do? When they refuse to let her spend the summer at Jillian's house, she must accept that her plans will change.
The old farmhouse in Stillness is a dream for Casey's parents. It has plenty of space, and Casey's mom has all kinds of ideas to remodel it. For Casey, who is a bit overly cautious anyway, the house is a nightmare. It's old, dusty, and hot; it needs work; and it feels creepy.
Strange things happen beginning the very first day when she finds a message telling her to "Get Out" in the dust on a bedroom mirror. Bizarre events continue to occur, furthering Casey's feelings that something is wrong with this house.
After Casey finds the diary of Millicent Amelia Hughes, another twelve-year-old girl who lived in the house in 1939, she starts to have nightmares and then decides she should find out the house's history. The presences of neighbor boy Erik Greer adds some extra excitement to the summer and he tells her some of the rumors about the house.
This scary story, a part of the Poison Apple book series, will keep readers going until the very end. There are just enough spooky events to make you wonder what will happen to Casey, what did happen to Millie, and what is wrong with the house. It's a fun and fast read for middle schoolers who like a good ghost story.
Casey Slater and her best friend Jillian have plans for a great summer when Casey's parents announce they bought a summer house in New Hampshire. Casey is ok with a vacation away from the city until she finds out her parents plan on living in New Hampshire the entire summer!
Soon after school is out Casey's parents pack up the car and a rental van and off they go to Stillness, N.H. This town is appropriately named because there is nothing going on in Stillness. There isn't even a real grocery store. The house doesn't have ac and the power isn't working. Wouldn't you be thrilled.
Soon odd things happen in the house. Casey has some strange dreams. Then she starts reading the journal of Millicent Hughes, a girl her age, who once lived in the house. Millicent was also having strange dreams and experiencing odd things in the house. Casey tries to talk to her parents about it all, but they don't believe her and think it's just her bad attitude. When Millie's journal suddenly stops Casey has a bad feeling. Find out what happened to Millie and how she is connected to Casey. Will they have the same fate? Pick up this quick read to find out.
Bottom Line: A fairly quick, interesting read. It's spooky, kind of strange, without being scary or weirding you out. The story is believable and made me want to checkout more titles in the Poison Apple series. ( Which Indian River owns- This totally bites!,Miss Fortune,Now You See Me...)
The Dead End by Mimi McCoy is a book in the Poison Apple series, a paranormal version of the Candy Apple series.
Casey plans to spend her whole summer with her friend, Jillian. They plan to go shopping, spend time at the beach, and get boyfriends. Casey’s parents have different plans. They bought a real fixer-upper home in New Hampshire and plan to spend the whole summer there. Casey is really bummed.
She won’t be able to spend her summer as planned and her parents are hardly sympathetic. Casey quickly realizes that something or someone doesn’t want her family there. She sees a message on a mirror that says “Get Out”. Her dad said it wasn’t there. As accidents continue to happen to Casey, the more frustrated her parents get. They definitely don’t believe her that something is happen. Casey finds a diary where a girl from the 1930s shows that the dreams that are happening to Casey were similar to what the girl had. What keeps causing the accidents? Is the girl haunting the house?
I definitely sympathized with Casey. It’s definitely frustrating when parents don’t believe in something they’re trying to tell them. I think this is definitely one of the better Poison Apple books. I liked the introduction to Erik. I though he added a fun element to the story.
Casey is afraid of pretty much everything. She believes every scary story that she hears. So when her family moves to their new home in the country, Casey is convinced that it is haunted. Afterall, the local folks say it is. Her parents are less than helpful and think that its just her overactive imagination. But this time Casey is right. There is a ghost. Who will believe her?
This was a really good book for its type. No it is not great literature, but it is not intended to be. It is suspenseful and a little scary. Casey is a likable character. The book has a lot to say about facing your fears. And yes for once there really is a supernatural force at work, not just some lame explanation like so many of these book. I would recommend this book to older kids and tweens.
So this was another book my daughter wanted me to read. I've discovered that I unfortunately have difficulty really getting into most middle grade books (Harry Potter was an exception, but it also qualifies as YA.) This wasn't bad, but it didn't make me interested until about half-way through. I've got one other Poison Apple book to read, but I can see why the series would appeal to middle-readers. It's just scary enough to get youngsters nervous, but not really scare the bejesus out of them. The cover art is great and will probably lead more young readers to The Dead End.
Amazing! These books are awesome and I think that they are kind of scary. It all just seems so real! I think that this book gives a cliffhanger like every GOOD book! I love this book and I would definitely recommend these books!!!
Casey is looking forward to the summer break. She and her best friend Jillian have made a lot of plans to make their summer the best one ever. What Casey doesn’t know is that her parents have bought a house in a small town and that they’ll be fixing it up during the summer. Casey storms off to her room and keeps sulking about it. When they pull up at the house, it’s even worse than Casey thought it would be. The house has no electrical power, no landline and she has no reception on her cell either. As soon as Casey enters the house she feels that something is not right. She hears inexplicable noises, things are moving on their own and she has vivid dreams every night. She even finds a message on a dusty mirror that says ‘Get Out’. Who is this someone that clearly doesn’t like the new home-owners?
Casey gets scared easily and likes to stay on the safe side. She feels watched all the time and she has no idea how to deal with a possible ghost. In the attic she finds a diary and she’s immediately drawn in by the stories of a young girl named Millie who once lived in the house. The writing suddenly stops and Casey tries to find people in town who might have known what happened to Millie. She finds out that the truth about why Millie’s writing stopped is truly horrifying. Is Millie the ghost she keeps hearing?
The Dead End is a chilling story about a haunted house. I've always liked to read creepy stories and I absolutely loved the thrill of The Dead End. I think secluded houses in the woods are so scary and I would never buy one, let alone live in one. Casey is very easy to connect with, even though this story is written for teenagers I still felt close to her and I read The Dead End in one sitting. The Dead End is the first book in the Poison Apple series and I'm certain that I'll be reading every single one of these amazing stories.
Once upon a time, way back in magical 4th grade, the only thing that mattered in my life was ice cream sundaes and colorful slime. Life was perfect- I had my amazing best friend Emaline, a great teacher and awesome fidget spinners and stickers. Emaline suggested the Poison Apple Books, and we started reading them together, sort of like a secret book club. I remember sitting in my bed way past my bedtime, trying to be as quiet as possible for my parents not to notice. I also remember that I was so scared to get up a night and see a ghost that I held my pee in until the morning. Hahahahahah. (So here’s the lesson- don’t read these books at night!) I also have the memory of my best friend and I rummaging around our school library, trying to find more Poison Apple Books. Great times, truly.
But then came 5th and 6th grades. The friendship we thought was rock-solid started crumbling under our feet. Long story, but here’s a simple version: Emaline got jealous when I hung out with other girls, and started being very bitter to me. Then she got her first phone and well- you can guess what happened. My (ex) best friend became addicted to social media, and had this uncontrollable urge to be popular and always pretty. This meant she had to drop me, because I wasn’t what one might call “popular” and “cute”. (Except I really really am, just not in that specific way). While Emaline was in Sephora buying lipstick and eyeliner, I was at Barnes & Nobles buying books. But anyways, I’m getting a little off track here, sorry. My point is that even though we went our separate ways, reading the Poison Apple Books together is a memory that both of us still share and treasure!!
It’s an amazing series. Just read it. Preferably not at night or with a friend that will choose tank tops and ripped shorts over you. :DD (sarcastic laugh, hahah)
I really, really liked it! I wouldn't normally be writing a review for this because it was so good and there is nothing more to say, except for two reasons. Well, three maybe.
1) What is it with 7th graders and crushes?! 🙄 Even in The New Class, the girls are only 12 and they're already starting the boy thing. But it's even worse in The New Class, because of the snobs, class, and all that status nonsense.
2) So the house was haunted by Millie's ghost. What about the funny things that were happening when Millie was Casey's age, back in the 1930s?
3) The accident that happens to Millie, it made me want to cry. I was so unsettled, so horrified... it was just so sad. But I'm just wondering, why wasn't she able to get out on her own? Did it get stuck or locked somehow?
Really spooky, creepy, sad, and relatable. I loved Casey and Millie. And maybe Eric Greer. 😏
