Another great read. Things I learned in this volume include: (1) How the Machu’s took power in China by agreeing to help a Ming Chinese general put down a populist rebel army that had taken over the capital—with this one tiny condition, that they be put in charge of everything. Be careful who you make deals with, Republicans.
And (2) after her father died, Princess Maria Therese of Austria, being ‘only’ a woman, was deemed unfit to inherit rule of Austria by Frederick Wilhelm of Prussia, who despite being an avid patron of art and philosophy, was also a louse who spotted an opportunity to plunder land from a neighbor. Princess Therese appealed for help from Hungary (her father had helped recover Hungarian independence from the Ottoman Empire), and with the Hungarian’s help, she was able to save her rule, and Austria, from Prussia (for the time being).
This volume also covered the rise of the Ottoman Empire, and the circular firing squad that was the Thirty Years War in Europe which ended with the Peace of Westphalia.
