I love this series. History is easy to understand when people are acting it out for you.
We start with the birth of Genghis Khan. His is quite a story. His father dies when he is still small and he and his mother are ostracized from the main clan. But when he gets older he has a comeback. It turns out the Mongols were pretty tolerant of other ethnicities and religions, and kept the trade flowing. So, sort of an internationalist group at the time (albeit, so long as THEY were in charge—so, benevolent dictatorship—not the best place to be). So, eventually succession disputes arise, and the empire inevitably weakens, but not before Marco Polo and his dad visit for many years, and see the failed Mongol invasion of “Japan”, the ‘islands of gold.’ Great story.
Next, the Crusades!
After the Muslims are run out of Spain by the Franks, some Pope gets a great idea. The merchants of Venice make a killing, but Constantinople is sacked. Saladin has some wins, and the Germanic ‘King of Sicily’ outwits a Pope. Then there is a schism, Pope Innocent III institutes the Inquisition and Joan of Arc is captured and burned at the stake by the Brits. Done.
Note Bene: The facial expressions on certain power-hungry leaders as they realize their narcissistic dreams have backfired or they have been outmaneuvered by less powerful people are … hilarious and wonderful to behold!
