Delia had spent sixty years as a slave to the Corpets, caravan masters, learning reading, writing and math. Then her master, Corpet, and a local human lord, Traford, told her she was the embodiment of a prophecy and to be the most powerful elf to ever live. Now she’s being chased by her evil great-uncle, bent on taking over the elven kingdom and Delia doesn’t even have her powers. On the run, she must learn to use those powers and get to know her parents. Soon, before great-uncle Iyuno kills them all.
A 20-year Air Force career, time as a manager at a computer operations company, wife, mother, sister and volunteer, provides a rich background for Connie Cockrell’s story-telling.
Cockrell grew up in upstate NY, just outside of Gloversville, NY before she joined the military at age 18. Having lived in Europe, Great Britain, and several places around the United States, she now lives in Payson, AZ with her husband: hiking, gardening, and playing bunko. She writes about whatever comes into her head so her books could be in any genre. She's published sixteen books so far, has been included in five different anthologies and been published on EveryDayStories.com and FrontierTales.com. Connie's always on the lookout for a good story idea. Beware, you may be the next one.
Slave Elf tells the story of Delia, a young woman sold into human service as a means of hiding her royal lineage from enemies of her family. Once she learns the truth, the story is off and running.
The real meat of the story comes from Delia learning not only about her royal family and the ongoing civil war of the elves but also the magical power within her--more power than any elf in a long time. The "chosen one" of prophecy is a bit trope-y but basically works here. Delia faces a slow process that is part tutoring and part introspective discovery to unlock the magic she needs to survive and save her people. The book is fast-paced and flows pretty well.
I think this would appeal to the YA audience, and readers who like coming of age stories.
I was honored to have read this prior to release (releases Feb. 19, 2019) and I enjoyed Ms. Cockrell's fantasy world very much. It was easy to root for the main character and I found myself holding my breath as she learned to adapt to her new identity and surroundings, and find the inner strength to prove she belongs in this new life she's thrust into.
I enjoy fantasy, and to journey along with Delia as she discovers who she is, the magic that burns inside her, and the way she adapts to her new world was breath-taking and exciting. It's a fun read with action, introspection, and a whole lot of magic and of course, battles of good vs. evil.
The Slave Elf is the first book I've read by Connie Cockrell and it will not be the last. The storyline was engaging and kept my interest as well as the drama, twists, mistakes and emotional turmoil created tension for the Delia. The characters and the storyline was well written and entertaining to read. Can not wait to read more from this author.

From slave to princess to queen, Delia's story is quite an intriguing tale. For the first sixty years of her life she has been kept as a slave for her protection. Now she must take the reins of her royal duties as heir to her father the elven king as they prepare to battle their long standing enemy. A YA fantasy, action packed with a hint of romance.
