Having eased her doubts a about Haruma, Yoh starts to relax around him, not realizing that he was actually behind the stalker incident. But when Yoh begins to assist the University Students’ Union, she finds herself in trouble once again. The group’s vice president, Kunie-senpai, has a grudge against her—and he’s threatening to take it out on Sawako if she doesn’t do as he says! In desperate need of help, can she bring herself to rely on Haruma?
Haruma continues to insinuate himself into Yoh’s life, bit by bit, and her friends are slowly leaving her isolated… but whose fault is that? Then a danger from Yoh’s past, no, not the one you’re thinking, rears its head as we show that no good deed goes unpunished. Possibly doubly so in this universe.
I mean ‘the mystery continues’ is basically this volume in a nutshell. Until this series finally lays its cards on the table it’s really hard to recommend it, but it’s certainly a much different sort of read than I get from my usual high sugar shojo and I do enjoy it. There’s just always a big question as to whether this is being clever or awful.
Haruma is still not so hot about personal boundaries, but he’s not too pushy either (on balance). Instead he appears to be engineering everything so that Yoh falls in his clutches, but how much of that is sinister intent? Depending on how you squint, a lot or not at all, which is obviously what the author is gunning for. We’ll table the discussion of how healthy his methods are for another day.
There is a scene between Haruma and Touya, Yoh’s bestest male friend, that is expertly staged to draw maximum dread and paranoia from not just their meeting but the lead up to it before it utterly pulls the rug out from under the whole premise. Now, is it possible that what actually happens is being manipulated? Oh yes, but that’s also for another day, clearly…
I genuinely like Yoh a lot, she reminds me of a nicer Hori from Horimiya, so it’s super easy to root for her. She’s an innate people pleaser whose good nature gets her into trouble constantly, so it’s equally easy to see why having the incredibly suspect Haruma around is an interesting way to balance her.
Sometimes this book is very smart about how it’s framing the big picture - it knows that if we are to root for a prime suspect like Haruma we need somebody who is unquestionably worse than him, which we get in the form of the odious Kunie.
To sum up this volume’s villain? Too much money, not enough common sense, and a mean streak like a particularly disgruntled skunk. It all combines to make our new antagonist a real piece of work. It’s also where the storytelling kind of wobbles off course a bit.
Yoh is sort of held hostage by this guy, in terms of expectations and work obligations, but he only manages some very vague and weird threats against Yoh’s female friend that don’t exactly make a lot of sense. It’s one thing to imperil our heroine, but it gets really muddy when the stakes don’t make a lot of sense.
For all that, this conflict does come to a rather good climactic scene that I genuinely appreciated, showing that Yoh’s got a limit, but it then has an odd denouement that, while I appreciate it not veering into sexual violence, feels for all the world that it’s heading there and just pulls its punches.
It does seem at times like the sneaky double-talk nature of the plotting and the constant concealment of Haruma’s actual deal is at odds with having the characters making sense and, as a consequence, both of them don’t come across as fully as they should. Still, I would rather have a book that overreached than didn’t try hard enough.
3 stars - I can’t see myself ever going higher in my estimation until it’s far clearer how sketchy this book actually is. There’s a lot of interpretation and it needs to be a bit less nebulous about how it’s treating Yoh. Still, it’s an interesting ride so far and I doubt that that, at least, will change.
First I want to say that if you don't like yanderes then why are you reading this series? I see people complaining about Huruma yet they still read vol. 2, that's your own fault.
Anyways, I loved vol. 1, unfortunately I didn't like this volume as much because the Kunie thing went on for too long. I understand why the author did it but it still shouldn't have been going on for so long. I was like, "when is someone finally going to punish this guy?!" Hopefully he gets what he deserves in the next volume.
I still like the main characters and Yoh's best friends. Haruma is different than other yandere characters I know of. He didn't just jump in to save her, he waited until she asked him for help. He wanted her to ask him for help, he knew how hard that is for her.
Overall, this volume could have been better if the Kunie stuff was shortened. I still love the creepy atmosphere which is still there. We still can't tell what's really going on and who Haruma really is. It is hinted that some incident happened in the past, which is probably why she can't remember him. In vol. 1 I thought he was lying about the childhood best friend thing but now I'm not so sure. I love the mystery and the mind**** going on with this series and am interested to see what will hsppen next and how this series ends. I just hope that everything going on and being said is not all just a red herring where Haruma turns out to actually just be a normal guy. That would be so disappointing and a huge waste of time.
In my review of vol. 1, I said that I will read a few more chapters before deciding buy the series and you would think that because I didn't enjoy this volume as much, I would decide not to buy the books. You would be wrong. I'm really intrigued with this mystery and am really enjoying Haruma, Yoh and her friends. So tomorrow I will be buying all of the volumes that are out in English so far.
I read somewhere that this series has finished publishing in Japan and is only 10 volumes long. Which is very manageable when it comes to money and space. I've decided not to start collecting series with over 40 volumes now. Although that's hard to know when it comes to ongoing series like Spy X Family.
💙gotta admit, I enjoyed the first one more but it’s definitely one of those series you’re like ‘what is happening but why can’t I put it down’ you know???
💙Yoh gets asked to join the student union (with only like 2 other members — one is Kunie: the popular, rich guy who has ulterior motives for asking Yoh to join… & the other member who does all the work)
💙Yoh ends up being isolated from everyone & doesn’t want to ask for help (she’s used to having to do things on her own & doesn’t want to seem ‘weak’)
💙Haruma asks to meet with Touya and then a girl suspiciously asks Touya for help & keeps him away from his phone in his free time so Yoh has a hard time reaching him
💙of course Haruma is always there at the end of the day for Yoh when he’s needed most
💙my feelings towards Haruma are complex & layered because I feel like we still have a lot to discover about him— I do read dark romances all the time & this manga definitely gives me that feel
💙to be honest my favorite part was the epilogue when Haruma is trying to figure out Yoh’s fetishes 😂😝 hehe
This is an odd series. I don't know how to classify it and I have no idea where it's going, but I was grinding my teeth the whole way through this volume. Yoh is an extremely likeable heroine who duels internally with being independent even when she really needs help. She may seem like a doormat, but she's really just kind to a fault and does actually have limits. She wants to see the best in people and that bites back at her. Haruma is a piece of work. I don't know what to think of him, but I'm glad he's there when he's needed. He seems both manipulative and respectful of Yoh's true boundaries. He may hang all over her at home, but when it really matters, he waits until she's in genuine danger or asks for help before intervening. He's interesting and conniving. Yunie doesn't know what's coming.
this series is buck. wild. and i have no idea where it's going, given that one character seems to be both the primary love interest and i would say, given the emotional manipulation, stalking, etc., also the main villain (however, i will note that this appears to be a conscious decision on the part of the mangaka rather than having the behavior framed as "romantic"). i don't know if this series is going to become a thriller once our main gal realizes all that's been done or, like, a "girl has pet psychopath" situation, which. you know. could be useful??? all of this to say, reading the second volume has gotten me to be like "i'm shifting into Unhinged mode" and thus am ready for whatever will come my way.
In the second volume its becoming clearer that Haruma is obsessed with Yoh but it seems she (while still confused by his behavior) was reassured by her mothers approval of him.
At this point I think her mother is not a very good parent (obviously)
Poor Yoh, she really seems to attract creepy guys as most of this volume involves her getting invited to the Student council by the popular Kunie. But...Its never a good sign when someone tells you to RUN while you have the chance.
I still find it somewhat distracting by the amount and placement of the speech bubbles.

I began reading this manga because I thought it was a mystery manga. So far it's just a high school drama-esque type of story. Dudes popping out of nowhere yet the protagonist can't remember them. And the male lead just happens to be near to rescue her each time. If this story ever gets better I might pick it up again. But after reading 2 volumes for now it's just not the manga for me.

No way they f**king kissed and he confessed his love for her and she just acted like it never happened!!?? Also kunie can catch these hands disrespectfully I hope haruma puts him in his place.
