Vampire High #2

Vampire High: Sophomore Year

Rate this book
In the satiric and funny sequel to the witty Vampire High, Cody's hopes for a great sophomore year at Vlad Dracul are dashed when his train wreck of a cousin, Turk Stone, moves in and messes with his life.

Turk's a brilliant teen artist and goth with a sky-high ego . Her attitude infuriates the vampire (jenti) students, especially the dark, brooding Gregor. But something changes in Turk when she stumbles on the abandoned nineteenth-century mill in the forgotten district of Crossfield and immediately claims it as her new arts center project.

Though Cody resents his cousin at first, he has his own reasons for helping make Turk's dream come true. But Crossfield has many secrets, and a mysterious vampire army called the Mercians will do anything to make sure they stay hidden. And when he takes on the Mercians, everything Cody has learned about courage and determination his freshman year at Vampire High will be tested.

I was born on October 19th, 1947 in the hospital at March Air Force Base just outside Riverside, California. My father, Norman, was a career sergeant who'd served as an aircraft mechanic and infantryman in the Philippines campaign early in the war and was taken prisoner on Bataan. My mother, Agnes, was a nurse at the hospital where he was sent to recuperate after the war was over.

Until I was fifteen, I lived on or near a number of Air Force bases in this country and in Germany. My sister, Patricia, was born in 1950 at Travis AFB.

Until I was six, I wanted to be a fireman. Between six and twelve, I wanted to be a paleontologist. When I was twelve, I decided I wanted to be a writer. I still haven't outgrown that.

I made some occasional stabs at writing and submitting manuscripts in my twenties and thirties. When I turned forty-seven, I decided to start writing things more regularly. I've been doing so ever since.

( Vampire High: Sophomore Year by Douglas Rees )

My personal thoughts on this book was that I liked it a little less than the first one which had me laughing in stitches more then once. Of course it's been about five? Years since I have read the first and now the second so that may be why. The end was the best part but isn't it always? The conclusion especially if it is perfect. I knew what was coming between Turk and Gregor and my bsdfbsjfbs I ship them real good! I was surprised / shocked at Cody kissing someone else, or someone else kissing him and for a moment I thought he and Ileana might just be the end, but in the end, all's well that ends well.

I love Turk and Gregor together, they're perfect for each other! I think Pestilence and Justin will end up together and Cody and Ileana, while due to what happened have planted my doubts, their still an awesome couple. I simply love and adore Dracula! He reminds me of an old kid. Like he's so old, he can be a silly old man and just do shit like give away a few million dollars.

Love him the best I think. Justin's actions and Ileana's were pretty shit and I personally would not have forgiven them but hey then it would end badly so. Cody's a smashing upright kinda guy. The only real thing I can say of true like 'reviewers actual critique' is Rees's use of 'he said / she said / Cody said / Dracula said' you know? I think that was a little... like grade school like? But in any case it's not the end of the world and I think it just fits.

Either it's simply the mans' style or he could manipulate his style into making it sound like a real teenage boy's. Which props to him if that's the case. And yeah, that's basically it. Oh and Turk was / is annoying as hell but when she teases Gregor, totally cute! I think it was more focused on the other characters this time around then Cody, Ileana and Justin per say which I loved as well. I definitely hope to see more Vampire High in the future!

( Update 2019 )

Before I say anything else, can I just say what a fucking shit review I wrote! Talk about lazy. I can't believe my past self. In any case, now that that is out of the way, here is my updated review. Loved this book. Like the first, it was like catching up with a dear old friend again. I fell right back into place. Again, at some points I wasn't as 'involved' as I wanted to be, but then at some points I couldn't stop rereading. This is true of the first book as well. And I want to explain, not as involved meaning I've already read the book you know? Then, unable to stop rereading, this book is that damned good.

It's packed full of life lessons like the first book. The characters are amazing. The interactions are spectacular. The pacing is really light and easy, meaning its a quick, easy read of a book, and again there was never a point where I was bored or wished that I could just skip ahead to the good stuff already. It's all good stuff. Again, I thought some spots sounded weird, as in writing mistakes, more so than in the first book, but again I could just be mistaken. Maybe it just read weird to me.

Loved Vlad. Loved him and Cody interacting and no it wasn't as weird this time around in the second book slash rereading it. In fact my only real critique and complaint is that, I did not get enough Turk and Gregor. Give me more of those two, and I'll be able to die happy! My only other thoughts are, I don't know why Mr. Rees stopped writing about Cody and his machinations.

I really do feel like, these two books were meant to be part of a larger series. I mean, the biggest clue to that belief is right there in the title ladies and gentleman! How many years does Cody still have left of high school? Four? Three? I feel like Mr. Rees could have written a book for every school year. I feel like there was more to say and more to write about old New Sodom and the people living there. But I guess if two books are it, then I'd rather leave Cody and his people off of a high note.

Who knows? Maybe if Mr. Rees had written more, then the gold dust would have turned to shit. But then again, maybe not. I just feel like there could have been more. The only other thing I wanted to share is, I am glad I have reread both books. For some reason I had this impression that Cody and Ileana's relationship was in real danger of ending or... I dunno. The thing with Pestilence just seemed up in the air to me. Like, Cody could really not get back together with Ileana and move on with Pestilence. Like, it felt... Unfinished to me. But upon rereading this book, I've discovered that I was mistaken.

Which actually surprised me. I mean, it is a wee big ambiguous, but I think overall, it's clear. Pestilence was a blip on the radar, and it's Cody and Ileana's ship all the way. Hehe, speaking of ship, I really do ship Turk and Gregor. And when I referred to Cody and Ileana's ship I meant a real ship. Like, their story? Ugh, I'm not making sense. I just mean I didn't mean a ship-ship like in anime when I used the word 'ship' just then with them. I totally mean an anime like ship with Turk and Gregor.

Anyways... If Mr. Rees ever does write another Vampire High book, I'd be ecstatic. Oh, and I surprised myself again by laughing in some places even though I was rereading this book. I mean, I also kinda forgot that Cody totally got his ass kicked and that Turk was hurt too. Turk... Gregor. Man. I seriously did not get enough of them. Again, I highly recommend that this wonderful book is read! Forget what I said before, both books are equally swell!

Cody is looking forward to sophomore year at Vlad Dracul Magnet School. He has a best friend and a best girl. Imagine his chagrin when his artist cousin arrives and takes up residence in his attic. If that isn't bad enough, when she mentions wanting to buy an abandoned textile mill in a part of town known as Crossfield, Cody's friends abandon him. Crossfield is the place where many jenti were buried after they were murdered. When Cody find a diary belonging to Mercy Warrener in which she shares her desire for peace between both factions of jenti and the gadje, he joins Cousin Turk in homesteading the mill and turning it into an art center. Surprise, surprise - his deadly enemy Gregor from book 1 falls for Turk and helps in the project. There is plenty of danger from assault and battery to arson, but Cody and Turk prevail. I enjoyed the book as Cody is witty, clever, and DETERMINED. You can't help cheering him on no matter which "stupid idea" he is forging ahead on. This kid doesn't know the word "quit."

Well, well, well... Příběh jasný s jednoduchou linkou, zajímavá témata (i když 'upírská střední' sama o sobě křičí tuctovost), a i docela příjemné postavy.

Kniha mi i celkově přišla méně naivní a hloupoučká.

Ať už v knihách, v malbách, v sochách, v hudbě a zpěvu. Pokud budeme chtít, pojítko se dá vždycky nalézt.

Druhák více ocení mladší čtenáři a lidé, kteří se rádi odreagují u něčeho jednoduchého, přihlouplého a zajímavého. Osobně se mi velice líbila pasáž s úryvky historie jentiů prostřednictvím deníku. Vždycky jsem měla ráda historii. Knize tak dávám 4 hvězdičky.

---------Reakce po dočtení knihy---------
Překvapivě lepší než první díl. Méně naivní a hloupoučké.

Závěrečné kapitoly, jejichž děj mi přišel až příliš překombinovaný, ovšem předávají čtenářům autorovo poselství: umění a hudba dokáže mezi lidmi, přáteli i nepřáteli, smazat i ty největší rozdílnosti.

Navzdory několika logickým nesrovnalostem a občasnému přehnanému, až nerealistickému jednání některých postav nabízí román s ponurou obálkou zábavný příběh o přátelství a snaze udělat svět o něco lepším.

In Vampire High: Sophomore Year, Rees has probed further into the hearts and minds of the jenti and this sequel is definitely richer for it. Rees has stepped up the game and told a compelling story that deepens the plight of the jenti. The backstory of Crossfield, the largely abandoned town near New Sodom and its black history are the focal point of Rees’ sequel. Terrible things have happened in Crossfield’s past…to the jenti. And they will never forget it. Whereas in Rees’ debut, you got more tepid high school fare and shenanigans, his sequel is quite different…complete and full of substance.

When we last left Cody he was being marked by Dracula and he and Leanna finally had a meeting of the minds (wink wink). He’d become a hero at school and managed to earn the respect of the faculty and his peers. All in all Rees gave us a happy ending to the yearlong conflict that had plagued gadje and jenti alike. With the polo team in full swing, things were finally going swimmingly at Vlad Dracul Magnet School and the local vamp population. All of this changes when Cody’s troubled cousin Turk arrives.

After finally overcoming the prejudices the jenti had about humans, Cody is once again thrown into the deep end, as his cousin inflames his friends and colleagues at school with her irreverent disregard for the tradition and history of the jenti. By openly pursuing an arts center in one of the abandoned factories in Crossfield, Turk engages all forms of opposition especially resurrecting an ancient rift between the Burgundians and Mercians. But some of the jenti who desire long-term change jump aboard and Cody realizes that his cousin is not so cracked up as he’d assumed.

The overall point that Rees is trying to make is that through art and music, the differences between people can find common ground. The art center could be a place where gadje and jenti can bridge the chasm of prejudice. Turk serves as a catalyst for Cody, a more fully realized self that can accomplish great things through perseverance and teamwork. One of the things that Rees makes so appealing in his sequel is that he presents real issues in a paranormal setting that go beyond the shallow contrivances that are so common in this genre. I really found Vampire High: Sophomore Year charming, engaging and a satisfying read. This book is great for middle grade readers, difficult readers and those beyond.

I remember reading Vampire High by Douglas Rees when it was released in 2003 (!). Mind, this was before anyone had ever heard of Twilight. I simply adored Vampire High, as it was funny but also very real, with great characters and a fun story. Now, seven years later, we have a sequel to a book that was obviously not written with sequels in mind.

The story in Vampire High: Sophomore Year takes place, naturally, during Cody's sophomore year at Vlad Dracul, a school for...um...vampires, but don't call them that. Call them Jenti, and humans are Gadje. After successfully healing some wounds between Jenti and Gadje the year before, not to mention reinvigorating the school's water polo team, this year finds Cody struggling to deal with his ecclectic cousin, Turk, who does not fit in to Jenti society as well as Cody does.

Honestly, that sounds very convoluted, but trust me when I say that you can read Vampire High: Sophomore Year without having read the original. This is because, while a few elements from the first are briefly explained, this is an entirely standalone novel. Characters that played major parts in the original are reduced to secondary status here, while new characters like Turk and minor characters from the first book now take center stage. As a matter of fact, even protagonist Cody is shoved onto the sidelines, mainly doing damage control for his out-of-control cousin.

Aside from the odd disjunction between this book and the original, the story is definitely passable, although it lacks much of the charm and wit of the first. In particular, the "history" of the town and the diary entries from Mercy Warrener were very engrossing.

It's hard to say if this book was written in earnest, or simply to cash in on the vampire craze, but it certainly isn't a bad read, and probably worth it if you adored the original like I do. Probably a toss up for most other people.

Loved this one, too! Just not quite as much as the first. In this one, Cody's cousin, Rachel/Raquel/Turquoise/Turk comes to stay with them and attend school. She and her mother were on the verge of strangling each other, so Cody's mom thought bringing her to them might help. Turk comes across as not caring about others' feelings or cultural things. She's an artist, and I guess she wants to evoke emotions on a more regular basis than her art allows. She finds an old mill that she wants to convert to studio space - but it's in a place with negative memories for the vampires. Cody thinks a gallery or a place for the arts where everyone could mingle with each other would be great and build new memories. Justin and Ileana both warn against it. Turk and Cody, however, proceed with their plans. They figure out what is needed to own the space and work towards making it functional. However, someone or some group is out to get them and doing anything they can to sabotage the efforts. It's an enjoyable read, and Turk's an interesting character, but I think I would've preferred reading about her elsewhere. Maybe let Cody finish high school and then bring her in, where he could mentor. But, that's just me. I'm so sad that there's no book 3 out, but I can always keep my fingers crossed that it'll come. There was a pretty crazy long gap between Rees publishing books 1 and 2, so maybe we'll get lucky in a couple of years :)

It's sophomore year for Cody Elliot at New Sodom's prestigious Vlad Dracul High School, and things seem to be going well. He managed to lead the school's water polo team to victory, acquire a girlfriend in the form of a jenti (vampire) princess, and maintain a C average. Not bad for a lowly gadje!

Unfortunately, Cody's good fortune is short-lived. His crazy cousin, who goes by many names but now refers to herself as Turk, shows up on his family's doorstep. Turk and her mother are at odds, and felt it best for Turk to have a change of scenery. Turk's main goal appears to be rattling everyone's cage. She also wants to open an arts center in Crossfield, a place that holds bad memories for the jenti.

Things are going to get dicey for Cody and Turk, and ticking off the jenti is never a good idea.

Rees has successfully kept his story going in this second VAMPIRE HIGH offering. His vampire folklore is different from his fellow YA writers, and I think that's what makes these novels so enjoyable. These are not your typical vampires. I also appreciate the fact that Rees keeps a consistent narrator throughout the story.

I think there is much more in story for Cody Elliot and his jenti friends. I will be anxious to see what happens next!

Vampire High was a pretty good book, but not good enough to reallyy stand out from all the other vampire books out there. I received an advance reader's copy from winning a contest and just got around to reading it.
Cody is a great main character; he's funny, sweet, a nice guy, and as is very evident in this book, and I'm guessing in the previous one, he is extremely determined to do what he believes is right, and he never ever gives up, no matter how many obstacles are in the way. I also really liked Cody & Ileana, and I wish we could have seen more of them. Turk annoyed the hecka out of me, so I suppose she fulfilled her purpose.
I didn't feel like the Mercian & Burgundians thing was explained all that well. I was still a bit confused about that at the end of the book. Another thing I would have enjoyed hearing more about was Crossfield's history. It seems like it would be very interesting.
The beginning was a bit slow, about until the Crossfield mystery came up. Oh, and if calling a jenti vampire is insulting to them, why name the book Vampire High? Hmm?
In spite of a few things, I really enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to reading the previous one.

This poor book, I had no idea they published a second one, none, I was fixing the Children’s Face out display where I work and that’s when I saw it. I completely fangirled out and bought it (after my shift of course.) I think I tore through it in two days. While, it didn’t have as much mythology as the first one did I still really liked it. As with the first in the series, it was funny but also serious when issues came up for the characters. I really love that about Douglas Rees, when he’s funny it can be almost cheesy (in a good way,) but when he goes into darker elements and believe me it does get dark, it’s believable and compelling.

Only complaint the sometimes out dated dialogue, certain phrases seem like they were said in the 50s rather than in 2000s on up, and that cover art. Douglas man, you’re amazing get someone off Deviantart or another artist community to design you cool editions because these don’t do your work justice.

Overall Rating: 6/7

Douglas Rees is hilarious. Wonderful wry sentences keep the reader chuckling as Cody Elliot starts what should be a great sophomore year at Vlad Dracul the rigorous jenti (vampire-but Don't call then that!) High school in his town. He had a great freshman year and is looking forward to fitting right in - enter his gothic, prickly, strident artist cousin Turquoise (Turk to you) who get right to work alienating everyone she meets.
As ever, Cody measures his reactions to each problem and opportunity against what is right and strives to do the decent thing even if it is hard or strains his friendships.
Cool themes and funny writing make this a refreshing read.

A really good follow up to Vampire High! The presentation of vampires by this author is very original--their social structures and culture (complete with dark secrets, an old language, and historical background) is well thought-out. The first book was about an outsider, a normal guy, healing the rift between vampires (jenti) and humans (gadje) that lived in New Sodom. In this next book the main character discovers old feuds and resentments within the vampire community and has to deal with an abrasive and alienated cousin who comes to live with his family. Lots of metaphor and mirroring of situations. Well done.

This was a fun read. It flowed well, read fast, and the characters were likable and fun, even Cody's cousin Tuck who I thought I would dislike turned out to be a fun likable person.

Don't expect anything deep except for the concept of learning about people and accepting them for who they are and not what you think they should be, but then this was a theme that ran through the last book as well.

If you enjoy the vampire books, then this is one to pick up and read for the fun of reading. Be entertained by the it, and then share it with someone who also enjoys vampires and light romance.

Woohoo!!! It's Back to School time at Vlad Academy, We catch up with Cody Elliot, and meet another family member with Big ideas, Turk Stone, his cousin! She's all about Gothic and art and the free spirited rebel, and like Cody, she's here as a last chance. Things heat up though when the Jenti go to war over something Turk and Cody are up to. WHO WILL WIN?! And why was the war sparked? Hehehe! It's a Delicious story. X3

Every bit as good as the first book, if with more depth and a more mature tone. I love Cody who perseveres in spite of everyone's doubts. With each accomplishment, he gains more and more respect of both the jenti and the gadje communities in these books. I really hope Mr. Rees at least goes through senior year with Mr. Elliott!

But something FIC Rees 334376

Hmm... I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. I'm a lot older now than when I read the first Vampire High, which has something to do with it, but another part of this is that the major characters from Vampire High took a dramatic backseat to new characters. I did like Turk a lot when she and Cody had their bonding moment, though.

I have to say I didn't like that he introduced someone new but quickly got attached. I LOVE these two books. What a great tale. So clever. Not dissing the beginning of the book, I just wasn't prepared for a 'new' person. But I love love love both of these books.

Enjoyed the first book, which made me excited for this one. However, it felt like I was reading just to see what happens, not because I care about what happens. So overall, disappointed with this book.
No offense to anyone who loves it!

Not as good as the first, but still enjoyable. The beginning is pretty hard to plod through, but the payoff is pretty decent. I'll probably read the next one.

Different type of style then I usually read but its a pretty good story line.

He is someone who makes a difference when it seems impossible to do so.
