When photojournalist Kamaria Trayhern goes undercover at the Mason family ranch, she's hoping to find her real father, not romance. But keeping everyone convinced she is who she claims to be will be harder than she expects--especially where one sexy ranch hand is concerned.

After all he's been through, there's no way Wesley Sheridan wants to tangle with more heartache and lies. So the last thing he needs is to be drawn to the pretty new caretaker. But with a jealous killer out to rewrite Mason family history forever, two lonely hearts must learn to trust each other...if they hope to survive the season.

I've lived six lives in one and it all shows up in the books I write, one way or another.

I was always a risk taker and broke mustangs at thirteen years old in Oregon. I learn to break them with love, not threat or pain.

At 17 years old, I picked night-crawlers (worms) out in our Oregon orchards from 9pm to midnight, every night. I earned enough money to buy my school clothes and book. I also plunked down $600 to a flight company at the Medford, Oregon airport and asked them to teach me...a girl...to fly. I soloed in 12 hours, which is average. From that time until I left for the US Navy at 18, I had accrued 39 hours of flight time in my Cessna 150 single engine airplane.

I was in the US military and was an AG3 (weather forecaster). There was no airplane club, so I couldn't fly when I was in the Navy. But I could look at the clouds in the sky ;-).

Later, I flew in a B-52 bomber for a day and night mission (18 hours total), a T-38 Talon jet, USAF, where I was riding in a "chase plane" on a test flight in a Dragonfly jet.

I was one of the first AFLA (American Fencing League of America) women fencers to fence with epee and sabre. These weapons were closed to women because they were too 'heavy' for a female to handle. I said baloney and fought the males and won half my bouts. I was part of a surge of women fencers on the East Coast in the 1970's to push for equality in the sport. Together, we changed the sport and changed the mind of the men. Today? In the Olympics? Women now fence in foil, epee and sabre, thanks to what we did as a vanguard showing the world it could be done.

I then became a volunteer firefighter when I was a civilian once more, the first woman in an all - male fire department in West Point, Ohio for three years. I became a local expert not only in firefighting, driving the engine and tanker trunks, but also had training in hazardous material (Reynoldsburg Fire Academy, Columbus, OH).

My books always reflect what I experienced. If you like edgy, gritty, deeply and emotionally intense love stories with sympathetic heroes and heroines, check out my newest series that will be available mid-Oct. 2015, and it incorporates much of what I have lived.

I hadn't read any of Lindsay McKenna's books before, and I can guarantee I won't be reading any more. The plot was predictable and the actual story-telling was ackward and didn't flow well. I definitely would not recommend this book. There are so many other books out there to read that frankly this one is a waste of time.

Reading a good book can make one think, but when an author can make one feel, that is a different story entirely. This is Lindsay McKenna's talent and the gift she gives to her readers.

Shadows From Her Past, written in 2009, is timeless. I confess I have a soft spot in my heart for cowboys as a result of a visit to a Dude Ranch when I was a young girl. Those images remain with me to this day and I can still smell the earthliness that is its own perfume.

Ms. McKenna has created a stunning array of characters in this work that shows parental love with all of its diversity. Rudd Mason, owner of Elkhorn Ranch, the largest spread in Wyoming and his magnificent mother, Iris, together run the operation with single minded purpose and love of the land. Rudd's unfortunate marriage to Allison, a woman ill suited in temperament for such a life has eroded the peaceful workings of the ranch. Flitting back and forth between the ranch and her Hollywood lifestyle, she has no problem ignoring her son and daughter while at the same time, claiming to love and protect them.

Kamaria Trahern, a beautiful and independent woman who, as a photo journalist, has traipsed around the world on assignments, is ready to settle down to a more peaceful life. As an adopted daughter, raised by an amazing, loving couple, she nonetheless, is looking for answers about her biological father. With her natural mother passed on, only months after her birth, the possible answer lies in a photo showing three people ~ her mother and two men. She won't rest easy until she finds the truth. Little do Rudd and Iris know they are about to get the surprise of their lives.

Wes Sheridan is a man fighting demons from a past with an alcoholic father and a mother who was unable to find the strength to leave, thereby exposing them all to abuse. Wes is an integral employee on the Elkhorn Ranch and Rudd values his strength and loyalty.

What transpires between the pages becomes an intriguing book showing human nature at its finest and at its worst. People can choose to embrace life and love in its purest sense, or not.

Kudos! I loved it!

I didn't like this book at all. Like others have said the book was preachy but for me the hardest to get past was how whiny the heroine was. Yeah, she didn't know who her bio-father was but she acted like being raised in a loving family was nothing. Once she found him she seemed to forget the people that raised & loved her, unless she needed to bitch about how bad she felt. When she got engaged she actually said "I can contact Morgan and Laura and let them know the date, too." (Wow, what a great daughter how kind of her. *eye roll*) and "I'm sure they'll come down and help." (Oh, she has things for them to do, no wonder she's decided to let them know her wedding date. :-\) When you add her attitude with her father's stupidity and the preaching it was a hard book to get through. Honestly, I only did because I also bought the other two in this trilogy and thought there might be needed info in this one...there wasn't.

Kamaria Trayhern - photojournalist around the world... adopted by a wonderful couple... mother died in a fire... she has a picture of her mother and 3 men... EMT trained

Wesley Sheridan - 2nd in command on the biggest ranch - Elkhorn Ranch, Jackson Hole...

Rudd Mason - runs the Elkhorn Ranch. 29 years earlier, in his youth, was in LA for a convention... met a beautiful woman, and ended up in bed with her... but then went on date with a glamorous actress who was at the convention selling something, and also ended up in her bed... he never found the beautiful woman, and she didn't contact him... but the actress showed up at the ranch a month later, and she swept him off his feet and they were married 2 weeks later

Iris Mason - Rudd's mother, matriarch of the ranch... ranch in family for 150 years, and she and husband made lotsssss of positive changes over the years, for a very prosperous ranch. Had a stroke, not taking her blood pressure medicine, not slowing down... very much into gardening and also has herb business...

Kamaria ready to settle down... and wants to know her father... follows clue in picture and finds Rudd, who is advertising for a companion for her mother with EMT or nurse training... she applies and gets the job (to get lay of land)... and hits it off with Rudd, with Iris, and... is attracted to Wes.

Rudd's wife is the fly in the ointment (having run/paid of 3 companions already)... her children are spoiled, she goes back to Hollywood for 6 months of year looking for acting opportunities... and her children are not Rudd's biological children (Iris took hair from all for DNA tests)...

When Kam finally gets nerve to tell Rudd, he welcomes her with open arms... his wife, feeling her children will lose out on inheritance... and hires a hitman to kill Kam (and then Iris)... but Wes notices hitman and foils him...

and Wes and Kam take over caretakers house... and ...

Lindsay McKenna - Shadows From The Past

I really enjoyed this story. In it we met Kama Trayhern who is looking for answers as to who is her father. I love the way Lindsay explores the issue. For it brings to light a issue close toany people's heart. I also like meeting Rudy and Iris Mason. I'm hoping to find there stories in the future. In this story we meet Wes Sheridan. I loved the way the characters complement each other. The story has a great flow to it. Wes has had a history with alcohol thru his father. It gives you a idea how alcohol can affect and destroy a family. This story has a flow to it I really like. It let's you see how each character relates to each other. I've been reading alot of her work and the issues she covers. They are a joy to read.

My Review: I feel like we came into the story already well into it, but more is explained as the story continues. I really enjoyed the characters and getting to know them. Kam is great, strong and resilient and perfect for the setting. I really loved Wes and Iris totally makes the story, who doesn't love a fiesty grandma?! I enjoyed the danger of the story, though it doesn't take over, it was a nice balance of small town Wyoming ranch, romance and thriller/suspense. I look forward to continuing the series.

Kam is Rudd's daughter, whom he never knew she was born, he had no idea that her mom was carrying his child, now years later he finds out he has a grown child. Kam is a caretaker for Iris who is very old, but getting along fine.

Kam was hired to be a caretaker

Parts of this book were pretty good and then other parts I just felt like it was the same information or part over and over again. And why make a point if then it's never explained. That makes me kind of crazy in a book. I felt like some parts just needed to be cut. So while not bad it wasn't great either so that's why I'm giving this book a 3 star.

Ia selalu saja penasaran siapa ayah kandungnya. Akibat gempa, orangtua adopsi Laura tak berhasil mengumpulkan barang-barang ibu kandung Kam sehingga praktis mereka sendiri pun kesulitan mencari siapa orangtua kandung Kam.

For some reason I keep trying to find a romance author that I can read. Sadly, Lindsay McKenna is the latest in a long line of failures. I have a soft spot for novels set in the West so I thought McKenna's Wyoming series might hold some promise. I read the first three chapters of this first novel in the series and rolled my eyes on almost every page. The characters are the worst kind of stereotypes, the dialogue is ridiculous, and the writing is just plain bad. Lines like "She liked his cowboy insight and use of colorful Western slang" and "Where I live there aren't many cowboys. I love the iconic symbol of them. They stand for the rugged independence that made America what it is today" just make me cringe. I can't waste the afternoon that it would take me to finish this book since I already know what is going to happen and I have no interest in finding out how it comes about.

I'll continue my quest for a romance author that clicks with me, but Lindsay McKenna is definitely off the list.

2.5 stars.

Right off the bat, I had trouble with the heroine. So she's adopted but she has great adopted parents and a loving upbringing - so I just don't get the whining about wanting to find her birth father. And then finding an old photo of her birth mother with 3 other guys, she automatically wanted the cowboy in the photo to be her father? Just because he's a cowboy?????

Then she went undercover as a companion/helper for the matriarch of the cowboy who just happens to own a huge Dude ranch and immediately she "loves" her grandmother and father? A father who had TWO one-night stands during a convention and then just gone home?!?! Who then just married the first woman who followed him home? Who just lets his wife goes off to Hollywood to do her rounds on the casting couches? Who doesn't even know if his legitimate kids are really his? Not much of a father if you ask me.

It's hard to like a book when you can't really empathize with the characters.

An interesting storyline there's plenty of stuff going on to keep the story moving in the right direction. There's even some reference to the Native American way of life and the treatment of the living things of the earth. There's also some great insight into what it's like to be adopted and wanting to know who your biological parents are. There's even some action and suspense to keep up the reader's interest.

Kamaria Trayhern is searching for her birth father. While she is working on the ranch of the man she suspects to be her birth father, she meets Wesley Sheridan. Kam and Wes feel an immediate mutual attraction. Once Kam has confirmed that she has at last discovered her birth father, her father's family goes into defense mode, since they feel threatened by another potential heir to his ranch. The hero and heroine in this book are too virtuous to be believed. The story drags in places.

This was the first book I have read by Lindsay McKenna and I really enjoyed it. It was a story about Kamaria Trayhern who had been adopted and she had always wanted to know who her father was. Her mother had died when Kam was three months old and she had been adopted by a wonderful family who had raised her well. She was a famous photographer who had traveled the world over but she was ready to slow down and take the time to find her father. This is a good story with a good heart.

This is one of my favorites. The writing and the plot are exquisite, as always. The action and adventure don't revolve around the heroine and the hunk, but rather sizzle between two different characters that aren't romantically connected. The romance takes a backseat to the story and the action, and I absolutely adore McKenna for it. I swear, no matter what story this woman is cooking up, she prepares it beautifully and in just the right order.
