Meh. I am not sure when this book was published, and I am a graduate student, so I should have expected the amount of valuable content received in this book. I still am unclear what makes an essay more compelling than making it specific and relevant to your life and answering a prompt. Reading this book could be helpful, and it motivated me further to apply to more scholarships, but I do not think I would recommend it generically.
I thought this book was quite helpful. It confirmed many things I had already known. The section on 30 winning scholarship essays wasn't as helpful as I had hoped because the scenarios written about were very much beyond the typical teenager's experience (immigration, hiking the Appalachia trail, etc.) that my son had no hope of writing a similar essay. Still, the 12 essays that bombed were helpful, and I am glad I read this book.
