I expected not to like this manga, but turns out I was mistaken. I like the art, and the humor that can be found throughout the book. I also like the ideas that Hokami created and developed through the book. I picked up the other two volumes in the series.

Ok, this has some nice visuals. The first major hell ghost looked good, albeit better as a posessed human to be honest. And the concept of a human hell warden is fine.
This does have some intriguing concepts with the hell guardians and all. However, that the girl is just thrown in is a bit weird, and you really have to question a hell where the souls of the dead learn such fantastic powers. Now we had a centaur flame spider, so ... really, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of hell?
That fox looked interesting. And to be honest, it does have interesting concepts and characters and while this is a solid 3 stars, I have to prioritize what I will read and I won't continue with this.

So this is what it's like to feel bored out of your skull. Very much like every other manga I've read of the urban fantasy kind, there is no real danger anywhere. The main character's only challenge is to choose which one of their all-powerful skills they use against foes. The foes are from hell, nothing special. They got away and Higuma is capturing them again. Really basic stuff if you're like me, unimpressed by 'spectacular' fight scenes and 'awesome' supernatural powers. I used quotes because they're not. I'm again reminded why manga is not for me - maybe only for 15-year-old me. Yeah, 12 maybe. I think I was young enough for this puerile humor way back then. And why is it demons sentenced to years in hell? Isn't being in hell supposed to last an eternity?

Higuma Kagarite is a hell warden tasked with recapturing the souls of demons that escaped hundreds of years before. The demons have possessed everyday humans and have caused them and those close to them a great deal of harm. He helps a young woman named Ayaha who stands up for him on the bus. She is possessed by a demon from hell that makes her steal from people. It's trivial for Higuma to exorcise that demon, but it's another matter altogether to face the one possessing her brother. It made him use violence against his family to make them do anything it desired. Higuma defeats the demon and claims its hands. He already has a bunch of them called Zaiju. They do Higuma's bidding in his fight against demons. Then he exorcises more demons. That's pretty much it for this volume.

This volume contains the first 7 chapters of the Hell Warden Higuma series.

Higuma is a "Hell Warden" who battles the escapes spirits of Hell, sending them back to where they belong so they can repent. He takes their energies and gives them a form of redemption- alongside his friend Ayaha, someone who he helps in the first chapter. This first volume is pretty simple, but I like it as a starting point. The enemies we face aren't particularly strong, and Higuma can handle them with relative ease, but it gives the reader a chance to learn about what these spirits are and why defeating them is important beyond "they're evil". We familiarize ourselves with Higuma's personality and powers. It's a decent opening volume with some nice art and a good, if played out, premise.

I’m a sucker for powerful characters that know they can mess you up, so this is a fun series for me. However, I understand that not everyone likes it when the good guy wins by being strong from the start…. Different strokes for different folks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I read chapters 1-3 only on the Shonen Jump app.

This feels similar to Queen's Quality, where there are individuals that fight demons that possess people going through struggles. This version seems less centered on character development and more on fighting, although it's hard to tell from just a few chapters.

If I see the full volume at the library I may grab it.
