God of the Poor applies kingdom principles to Twothirds World issues and to western attitudes. It is a valuable book for all Christians in developing a biblical approach to poverty. Serving the po
I would really recommend this book to any Christian who is interested in poverty and international development. I found it very helpful to think about topical issues (especially relevant to my studies) such as the environment, politics, money, etc in relation to poverty and from a biblical perspective. The book presents a clear but balanced argument and I really enjoyed reading it.
Prior to my first missions trip to Uganda in 2008, I visited a local Christian bookshop, praying that I would find something to help me prepare for the trip. This book was answer to prayer. The message was relevant for myself and those who I was going to meet in Uganda and would recommend it as a must have tool on your bookshelf.
A true story: When I visited a baptist church I had this book in my rucksack (which was partially open). As I dialogues with a young minister he spotted the book and continued to look to look at me in surprise. It transpired that while he was in the UK he had met Dewi Hughes and was astounded that I had a copy of his book with me during my first trip to his region. There are no such things as coincidences.
This book came at a time when I was preparing form y first mission to trip to Uganda. After asking for direction about which book to buy, I went directly to a shelf in the local christian book shop and pulled this book out.
During a home group meeting someone felt that they should sing a song. Which turned out to be the same song written at the beginning of this book...
For me, this is a must read for every aspiring missionary.
While Hughes didn't present in-depth solutions to any of the complex problems in this book, he did cover a lot of the issues and at least explain in a general sense how they apply to our lives. I appreciated this book as a sort of introductory statement on how Christians ought to consider their role in combating suffering globally.
