It's been SIX YEARS since I last read this????

Where the hell does the time go?

I actually thought this one got a little long-winded but the fact that I've read it this many times means I'm not coming off those stars.

Ever.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

5/14-I still love it. This triad has become a comfort read for me.

Can I give more than 5 stars????

Gideon is a notorious vampire hunter who also happens to be Jacob’s brother-Jacob who’s married to Lyssa (Vampire Queen of the Far East Clan). Gideon is also a lost, lonely and tortured soul until one fateful night he walks into Anwyn’s BDSM club looking for something but not quite sure what. Anwyn is the formidable Mistress of Club Atlantis who notices Gideon right away but allows him to basically mow through 3 other Mistresses of the club before she intervenes. Gideon responds to her immediately but the wrinkle is Anwyn is involved with Daegan-vampire assassin extraordinaire.

Throughout the reading of this I kept having old adages run through my mind like: ‘still waters run deep’ or ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ as Gideon is a man of few words but there are so many emotions that lie just beneath the surface. He is the master of deflection via humor as well as denial. He’s such a well constructed not to mention complex character it’s hard not to love him. He can break your heart and have you laughing within the span of a few minutes.

Daegan at this point is mostly an enigma. We don’t get much info on him other than he and Anwyn have a relationship which involves her submitting to him. Only him. Anwyn is tough as nails which is part of the reason she's never become Daegan's servant. She’s also got a 747 worth of baggage and has to relying on both Daegan and Gideon to help her get through her transition. She's exceptional at compartmentalizing her issues and focusing on the task at hand ordinarily, but her transition is challenging and wrests her control.

I have to be honest I’ve been clamoring to get to Gideon’s story since he was introduced. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the other books in the series but these two were spectacular. In fact, I got so engrossed that I didn’t even review this one prior to starting and finishing Vampire Trinity. But, I will try not to mix the reviews. This one mainly focuses on the development of Gideon and Anwyn’s relationship, coaxing Gideon to admit the possibility of having feelings for Daegan as well. I will say if I’d had had to wait a year to read the conclusion to this I probably would’ve had to rock myself to sleep for many MANY nights. Thankfully, that was not the case.

I thought that Joey W. Hill did an honourable job with this book, turning worn-out themes into a rather smart and good story.

Gideon is a vampire hunter, overwhelmed by guilt and grief since the woman he loved was killed by a vampire. Pure tortured Alpha male with a knight-in-shining-armour complex and I can see you rolling your eyes!
Daegan is a vampire, tall, dark and broody (duh), powerful and dominant.
Anwyn is a Dominatrix, owner of a BDSM club and already involved in a relationship with the above mentioned vampire when she meets Gideon in her club. I got interested in this story because I liked her and this quote sums up her character pretty well : (…)”her lips had curved, a tear caught on that tremulous but brave upward turn.”

Indeed, not long after the beginning, Anwyn is savagely attacked, , discovered bleeding in an alley by her two Alpha males.
My interest in the story persisted because Gideon and Daegan don’t go strolling in the setting sun on an avenging rampage to soothe their ”male rage, so helpless in a situation like this, a desperate need to give her back what had been destroyed”
Instead, it is a closed door story where they become her jailers as well as her care takers while she’s struggling to come to terms with what happened and her new self, each man exploring his relationship with her.
”What she needed was a cocoon of generous, passive emotion to rock in, like a quiet ocean. In that quiet, maybe she could coax her hiding soul from the dark shadows into which it had fled”

My complaint is that it was too long and therefore didn’t avoid a few reefs.
Confined places are fine for enhanced emotions, deep introspection and character growth but the story and the characters start to choke on their own breath after too long.
The author often kept turning over the same inner turmoil and those moments were useless and irritating. They disconnected me from the characters and pulled me out of the story.
At last, I dislike it when an author explains me the pros and cons and whys of the characters’ actions.

To conclude.
Despite a few reserves, I liked Vampire Mistress and will read the follow-on “Vampire Trinity

Why I read: Received for review from the publisher.

Favorite Quote:Anwyn.” Daegan caught her shoulders.
The vampire’s command resonated through the bathroom, and possibly the entire lower level. Gideon knew generals – not to mention high school teachers – who would give a left nut to freeze motion and rivet attention as Daegan did with two syllables. Who the hell was this guy?

Favorite Naughty Quote: Daegan set aside the lubricant, his hand still working himself. That glistening tumescent organ slid through his clenched long fingers like a living beast.

Vampire hunter, Gideon Green is a tortured soul. He spends his days hunting vampires that have killed innocents, all the while dealing with his brother Jacob who was recently turned into a vampire. Gideon is yearning for something – anything to turn his soul from the blackness that is enveloping it.  He ends up at BDSM Nightclub Atlantis owned by Anwyn – a Domme herself. She knows Gideon is more violent and aggressive than the normal men she lets into the club, but she sees something in him – something not at all unfamiliar to her.

Gideon refuses the three mistresses Anwyn sends in, sending him over the edge in pure rage. But when Anwyn herself walks in, and demands him to become submissive – something shifts in Gideon. Gideon is not a submissive, but he is searching for loyalty, to be used for service. All parts of his body want to rebel, but he hangs onto a thread of hope that Anwyn can strip him down to his base self.

Anwyn felt his yearning, a gas fire that threatened to consume. It was too similar to what she knew and remembered, and she felt oddly stripped as she looked into his face and saw how lost he truly was, this feral creature who’d come to her door, not sure if he wanted to bed for a bowl of scraps or break in and take whatever he wanted.

Anwyn feels something special about Gideon, something she has only felt for one other person – Daegan Rei. Daegan is a very old, very powerful vampire whom has protected and shared a relationship with Anwyn for years. Anwyn has refused to become Daegan’s servant, refusing those three marks it takes. Daegan doesn’t accept no easily, and for him to accept Anwyn to remain human shows he cares for her deeply. Daegan notices the spark in Anwyn’s eye when she looks at Gideon and knows this man is something different.

When Anwyn gets brutally attacked later that night in an alley by rogue vampires, she gets thrust into the world she was trying to avoid. All of Gideon’s instincts scream at him that this is wrong, but his heart knows he can’t harm Anwyn. To keep her alive, he is going to have to face his biggest fears and learn to trust and live with those he has hunted and hated.

Oh Joey W. Hill, where have you been all my life? Writing tons of books I’ve never read? *cry* Vampire Mistress is the first book I have read by Joey W. Hill and I was blown away. I absolutely loved this book. Usually erotic paranormal ménage makes me run and hide. But, I received this in the mail, and many people have recommended this author to me so I dove in. I honestly think this is the first ménage book that 100% works for me. The dynamics of the three people in this relationship are amazing. There is Anwyn, the very dominant female who has a complicated relationship with a very dominant vampire. She refuses to submit herself to become his servant and he refuses to submit his true feelings that he loves her. They both care deeply for each other, but their relationship is on a static hold.

Then Gideon enters the picture – the brutal, tortured Gideon who will lay down his life to protect a female, especially Anwyn, who he has a life altering connection to. But he will also fight to the death against vampires that he has an absolute hatred for. He has a very cocky attitude with a sarcastic mouth that made me smile many times throughout this book. When Anwyn is turned – for him to put aside his presumptions, for him to be able to work and trust Daegan, it is really a remarkable journey Joey W. Will takes him on. These two fierce men are forced to work together to save the woman they love, and in doing so, they start breaking down the walls that each have held up their whole lives.

Anwyn pushes the sexual boundaries in this book, and for me, it is the perfect mix. The way she strips Gideon down, bares his soul – puts him into sexual situations with Daegan, is beautifully done. Joey W. Hill takes these characters just far enough. She gives us very erotic sex, and just a hint of Daegan and Gideon together, as they please Anwyn to make their scenes together extremely erotic. Like I said, I am not huge into erotic ménage – but I became so emotionally invested in these three characters, that I could not imagine it working out any other way.

We also see the journey of Anwyn physically and mentally changing into a vampire and it is not pretty at all. It is horrifying and raw, and adds another level to this book. The Domme Anwyn now has to give up all control and put her trust into these two men.

Their story is not done yet though. Coming this September is Vampire Trinity which will conclude this trio’s story and I am on pins and needles to get my hands on it. I already have the first four books on their way to me and can’t wait to read more of Joey W. Hill’s work. Vampire Mistress will definitely make my favorite list this year. The erotic nature may not work for everyone, and I can’t pinpoint exactly why this book affected me so much.  However, it is a book I very much recommend.

Good Lawd!

Sorry, this book suffers from the Laurell K. Hamilton school of long, verbose sex scenes. It suffers from the cliche "oooo, two alpha males and oh hell NO I AM NOT GAY but ooo, I like it when another male touches me" thang. Maybe that's not a thang, but I find it fairly hilarious.

There was one line, damn, I wished I had placed a marker at the page, which had me rolling on the floor. Wait, I found it. "She'd also seen two situations where two men loved, but never thought of themselves as gay. She liked that. Love shouldn't be stuck in a box with a label."

What the milk and cookies? Oh yes, heaven forbid that any of the brooding, cocky alpha males regard themselves as gay. Noooo, that would spoil things for everyone! That did me in.

The dialogue also did me in, with all the tough alpha guy "witty" bon mots and retorts. If I hung out with these two, I'd walk away from them.

Or tell them to get a room and fuck already.

The shame was I really appreciated the female character. She saved the book.

4.30am - the time I finished this book this morning after intending only to read a couple of chapters.
All three characters in this story have incredibly complex histories. Opposing yet complimentary, attitudes/views so set yet evolving. The three of them thrown together and all trying to discover who they are as a group and also as individuals.
This is a 3-way romance, brutal in content given the inciting event that throws the characters together but I like the hints that their trinity is going to save/give each of them their heart's desire.
While the story remains "structured" by the vampire world, I really like how it focuses almost entirely on the three characters melding, with Anwyn's transformation the central driving plot, with only a touch of the external forces/politics (I expect that to play a much greater part in the next book).
Daegan Rei has me intrigued, can't wait to find out more about his past in Vampire Trinity (the next book in the series). Loved Gideon Green and his gradual evolution from vampire hunter to vampire servant. Anwyn - wow, what incredible endurance and strength.
Vampire Trinity is already beside me and I expect I'll be reading it all today. :-)

I'm sorry to say this because it seems many people really like this book, but I couldn't stand it. I thought all the characters were whiny and annoying. Worst of all, after Anwyn is turned into a vampire, it's as if the same scene plays over and over again! It drags after that big event.
To be fair, the book started interestingly enough. I really thought I was going to like it. Sadly, I did not.

I love the Vampire Queen series and I'm OCD when it comes to reading a series in order but you could start with Vampire Mistress and you would be ok. There are a few mentions of previous characters in the other books but nothing that will have you lost.

IMO this book has the most emotional tug of war going on between the characters in the series so far. You've got three strong-willed characters who are looking for something that's missing in their lives.

Gideon is a loner and hates vampires so he has devoted his life to being the best vampire hunter.

Anwyn is the beautiful owner and operator of Atlantis, a BDSM club.

Deagan is a dark, mysterious and sexy vampire.

Gideon finds himself being drawn to Atlantis and after he doesn't find what he is looking for during 1st and 2nd visit; he gets a visit from the beautiful owner. He knows that she is what he has been needing. But when he finds out that she is in some kind of relationship with a vampire, he pulls away from her.

The vampire in question is the mysterious Daegan. He and Anwyn have been in a relationship for 5 years. Deagan is the only person Anwyn will submit to, but she can't allow herself to totally submit to Deagan to become his servant. So the two's relationship is on an edge of either failing or becoming what they both need. That's where Gideon comes in. He could be the missing piece to the puzzle they need to make all three happy.

The threesome goes through hell together and is trying to make their way back. All three needs to learn how to submit to one another. But with three dominant characters, it won't be easy.

They do not get their HEA in Vampire Mistress, their story continues in Vampire Trinity . I'm very much looking forward to seeing how they overcome their personal hang-ups and learn to be a part of the harsh vampire world and it rules.

Vampire Mistress is not for the fate at heart. It has violence and emotional roller coaster mixed with strong BDSM elements. But if you are looking for a sexy and intense read pick it up today.

I recommend starting at the beginning of the series just so you learn the rules of the vampire/servant roles and get a little background on some of the other characters. But like I said if you wanted to start with this one you won't be lost.

re-read review:

I guess maybe the Anwyn character, a cool and controlled Domme, goes through a total loss of control and then learning to regain that control. I guess we should be riding that rollercoaster of crazy with her and relate to her or identify with her. I get it. I do. But Anwyn isn't written as a woman losing control and gaining it. She's written as a woman filled with self loathing and self pity because she gets everything that she wants but not in the way she wants it. She's written as an immature brat who lashes out at the one person who unconditionally loves her. And thus, we're stuck with a character who is supposed to be a controlled Dominatrix but is actually a petulant, whiny pain in the ass with manacles and a St. Andrews Cross.

The burgeoning relationship with Daegan and Gideon absolutely redeems this book. But, and there is always a but, the Anwyn character serves as a bridge between the two men. Probably more like a link but therein lies the problem. Anwyn's needs and desires define the Daegan and Gideon relationship. Hill creates a conflict between Daegan and Gideon exterior to the whole Anwyn crap and it could have been exploited to create a romance of the heart breaking, earth trembling variety. Sadly that awesomeness only exists in my brain. Maybe I'll write a fanfic.

I presume you know what the book is about. I'm letting you know what I liked or disliked about it.

I started the Vampire Queen Series with this book intentionally. I had read the descriptions and excerpts for the VQ series several times but just kept setting it aside, not sure it would interest me. Anyway, I read all the very good reviews of VQ and figured I'd start here and check it out.

I've read the 7 books of Natures Desire and if there's an 8th one I'll read that too. So I want you to know I'm a big fan of JWH. Truly. But getting back to the VQ Series. I'm just not sure what I think about this read.

I'm wondering if the tone and pace of the Vampire Mistress is consistent to the other books in the series. I'll probably read other reviews and take it from there.

I am certain of one thing though - the grip of this story won't let go anytime soon. I expect in the days ahead I'll ponder this story as I garden and do what I do when I'm not reading.

Once I decide I'll come back and update this review.

This book in the series is so different. Gideon is a puzzle to me, he is one of my favorite characters in this series. He is so tortured and looking for something and ends up getting it literally! I loved the triangle Dagean him and Anywyn formed and they are an unstoppable. Anywyn already connected to a vampire ends up getting turned and Gideon gets marked as her servant so the three of them have major issues. I loved watching how all this played out but I felt it was very stop and go for a long time. I also had trouble with the inconsistencies of Gideons behavior. Even though the Author tried to explain it I still felt like how did he get to this point? It was almost over explained but with no clear reason. But who cares! They still made one hell of a threesome so sexy. The mark on Gideon is beautiful and so representative of their connection. I gave this book 5 stars on account of Daegan!

I love these books as you can see from my other reviews. WOW I didn't expect bad ass Gideon to turn into a pile of gooey sweetness. It was great seeing him struggle of what he was (vampire hunter ) to Anwyns servant. Anwyn however, I found her difficult to like at times. I know she had been through a lot but just whiny. She was turned into a vamp against her will by a vampire that was schizophrenic. Causing her to have some kind of fits. I wished I would have seen the more Mistress side of her. Daegan on the other hand had marked Anywn when she was human but never gave her the third mark. Until later. Between the three of them they battled the council for Anwyn to be accepted and Gideon to be her servant. In the end the three find true love. I had know difficulties in like the ménage between them. They were sexy and hot together. Definitely recommend this read.

I admit that until I read this I was a Joey Hill virgin. Well, glad to say that is no longer the case. This was an outstanding foray into BDSM, menage territory. While I am not big into BDSM, I can tolerate it more from a dominant female standpoint. Submissive females make my skin crawl, so the heroine, Anwyn was right up my alley. Submissive males are a good thing in the bedroom, as long as they make up for it by being super alpha outside of it, so Gideon Green, one of the heroes, fills the bill rather nicely. The other hero, the dominant vampire, Daegan Rei, is just macho sex on a stick. He will screw anything or anyone he can force to their knees. There is definitely some hardcore action in this book, but guess what. Vampire Trinity is definitely in my TBR stack.

This is my second reading of this book. I first read it back in 2011. I read it to refresh my memory in preparation for reading Vampire Master. I enjoyed this book as much as the first time around. This is the first book in the Club Atlantis spinoff series. I want to reread the second one, Vampire Trinity as well because there is some yummy M/M action going on in that one.
The general plot of this story is the making of a vampire. If you've read the earlier novels in this series you know that Gideon is the brother-in-law to the Vampire Queen. He becomes important in this story when Anwyn, owner of the Club Atlantis is attacked by very evil vampires and forced to become one.
The best Goodreads review on this book is by Mandi Schreiner.

Since I'm reading these past the publishing dates, I know this is a setup book to the next one. I was a little bored at times, which hadn't yet happened to me in the series. I knew Gideon would be a complex character, and if I didn't know that there was a second book following, I would have felt "jipped." I also felt that we needed a bit more family (i.e. Jacob and Lyssa) interaction, even if it was only in the form of phone calls. Lady Lyssa, of course, had a fabulous LOL quip, which each book seems to deliver. I am glad that Hill always remembers. I may read again after I finish "Trinity," to see if I missed pieces while "bored," as I tend to skim at times.

I wish I could give this book more than five stars cause it damn sure deserves it. Joey just keeps getting better and better in her story telling.
I loved all three characters for what they brought to the table. My heart ached for all of them. They are so intense, dark in their own ways, and the feelings they possess are overwhelming.
Great read. Run to the store and buy this book. It's worth every penny.
I am so looking forward to Trinity.

Ooooooooohh I can't wait another 4 months to see how this is gonna end! The story leaves off right in the middle, to be continued in the next installment. Vampire Trinity comes out this September and I'm excited to see how the 3 part alliance handles the current situation and their relationships with each other and as a whole. On the edge of my seat here (still fanning myself from some particularly steamy scenes).

Fantastic! I was at first hesitant to read these as although I read a lot of books with strong female leads I usually don’t go for total femdom. The lead in these two books is Anwyn Naime a Domme who owns a fetish club. So I was not prepared to be blown away by this intelligent, sensitive, well written story. But as you may have guess I sit here all agog regretting that it took me so long to read these. Now I will have to get and devour the rest of the books in this series.

It is no secret I love Joey Hill’s Vampire series. However, Vampire Mistress doesn’t hit the same notes as the books leading up to it in the series. What I love most about her books is the transportation to an exotic setting full of beauty. Vampire Mistress takes place in the basement of a BDSM club. While the atmosphere aids in normalizing the sexual chemistry between the characters, I feel I got cheated out of my favorite part of Hill’s masterful writing. The character’s unique personalities and background put a fresh spin on the vampire-conversion-by-force plot.

The main character, Anwyn is the owner of the BDSM club. She has a romantic 5-year history with a vampire where she managed to walk away. Despite falling for him, he never made her his servant. This alone hooked me on the book. Daegan Rei is suave, sophisticated, dominating vampire that makes my heart skip a beat. How could she resist him when I was ready to volunteer by page 50? Their complicated relationship plays out in the most delicious ways, but I won’t spoil it here.

Caught in the web of their vampire relationship problems is Gideon Green. Readers will remember him as Jacob’s little brother who not only hates vampires but hunts them for a living. I felt Gideon was a lackluster version of Jacob. As Gideon reconsiders his life decisions, we learn what makes a man become a vampire hunter. He frequents Anwyn’s club to escape the need to control everything and Anwyn is more than happy to take control of him. However, when she becomes a vampire, he finds himself taking care of her out of a twisted need to revisit the bliss she gave him in her pleasure rooms. He must choose between the relief found in surrender and his moral code as a vampire hunter. He has the conflicted emotions of Jacob without the selfless service to his mistress and skills as a homemaker.

Warning: do not start this book unless you have already ordered the sequel. There is a massive cliffhanger with the promise of issues resolved in the next book. As a huge fan of Hill, Vampire Trinity was already on my shelf. Overall, I want to see how this plays out for Anwyn. She is the strong, modern heroine that I love to read. Getting more time with Daegan Rei between the pages is a bonus too.

Joey is a new author to me and I chose this book because I saw it promoted on another author's FB page AND it was free! Well if the aim of the exercise was to rope me in, they done me good. I really enjoyed this and the well developed characters this story revolves around, my favourite being Daegan, I could get into some serious trouble with him. To be fair Anwyn and Gideon are also great characters and they all have their own back story which is gradually released throughout this and the second book in this tale, Vampire Trinity.
The majority of the book is spent within the walls of Club Atlantis, a BDSM club which is Anwyn's business. I'm not going to say too much about the plot and give the story away but fair to say Anwyn has a serious incident which requires her to be confined within the basement of the club and our two heroes make it their goal to help her through this period in her life. Gideon ends up becoming something he should in theory abor (and he does struggle) and probably if I had read the previous books in the series I may have known more about him. Having said all that I felt the author made an expert job of keeping me absorbed whilst staying within these walls.
If you like Vampire books with plenty of spice I would definitely recommend this book and it's follow up Vampire Trinity. Although I haven't read previous books in the series it would seem that it is not necessary to enjoy the tale of these three characters, I will however be looking to read them some time soon.

Well, well, well. I took a break from the Vampire Queen world after binge reading the first four books. In between, I read the Twilight Saga for the first time in nearly ten years (ugh!). Now Joey W. Hill writes about REAL vampires, ones that are badass, realistic, and just plain sexy.

I met Gideon back in book number two, "The Mark of the Vampire Queen", and he was the typical vampire hunter with a troubled past. Nothing new. Boring. Blegh. When I learned he had his own book (two, in fact), I was hesitant. My first impression of him was dull. Yeah, the sex scene between him, Jacob, and Lady Lyssa was kinda hot, but only because Lady Lyssa was there. *PSST!* I would loooove to be her servant, hehehe.

Anwyn, though, made it all worth it. That woman is just mind blowing. I felt her dominance right from the start. Within two pages she had my attention. She brought out something in Gideon that I was not expecting. Now I love the guy. His smartass attitude is awesome, his baggage is something I connected with, and he just came off the page. I look forward to the next book.

But, after a while everything got sluggish, hence the 3 stars. I love Joey's writing, but nothing major happened. Yes, Anwy is brutally raped and forced to become a vampire, but...something was just missing. I wanted to see more of Daegan. The sex scenes rocked, but like I said. Something was amiss. I guess I just wanted more to happen.

Just a quick few words on this. This is a BDSM Vampire read that is sexy and pull out the red carpet for you.
It took me a bit to read because I wasn't totally int he mindset for a read this erotic, but once I started I really enjoyed d the book. I will have to grab the rest of the book in this series.

This book has a good plot and does a great job of bringing an emotional balance with its characters I like the fact that she made sure it not only had a great erotic story line but that it also had a plot that kept you enthralled. Overall a sexy PNR that I enjoyed!
