My Brother's Problem

Rate this book
In the midst of finishing her education and working toward a stable career and a promising future, Elodie met the man of her dreams. Her life seems to have finally leveled out after surviving a rough upbringing with significant help from her older brother. But when her relationship takes an unexpected and dark turn, she’s forced to dig a little deeper into the life of the man she loves in an attempt to uncover who he really is.

Detective Latham Williams swore his life to ridding the streets of dangerous criminals in a desperate attempt to leave his city in safer conditions than the ones in which he’d grown up. His childhood was plagued by his own neglectful parents and having to learn how to care for the girl next door, his best friend’s sister, who was being abused herself. When he learns that Elodie is dating a prominent criminal defense attorney, Latham’s concern for her safety and her sanity causes even bigger problems for both of their lives. Latham tries to navigate his tension-filled friendship with Elodie without putting her further in harm’s way, without stepping on her brother’s toes, and without sacrificing the attention that his job requires.

But what Latham doesn’t realize is that Elodie doesn’t need saving. She’s got secrets of her own. A darkness of her own. She was willing to look beyond minor disagreements and to understand that all relationships have their struggles, but she refuses to spend her life as a victim. She’s spent her time in that role and she isn’t going back. Now, she’ll let that darkness out once more to see if she can save herself a second time.

In this dual perspective, dark romance, three lifelong friends spiral through hateful accusations, uncover the secrets locked behind years of traumatic relationships, and try to learn who can really be trusted when they all realize they’ve become tangled on different sides of their city’s most notable crime boss.

WARNING

Drugs and murders and romance, oh my! Ember Nicole’s debut novel My Brother’s Problem is perfection. It’s guaranteed to make you feel all the things, leave your heart pounding, and make you want to race to the end. It’s twisty and turny, and chapter 28 will make you black out. Run to Amazon or KU now!!

Y’all.
If you’re here because you enjoyed Jersey Boy and The Broken Bounty Series, and you thought, “Oh, I need more of this author.”
Listen.
This one is not like those books.
This one is hard to read.
It was a bitch to write.
I hate it just as much as I love it.
Please, if you decide you’re going in anyway, enter with caution.

Why this book isn’t talked about more is beyond me. Very underrated. This book is filled with a lot of mental and physical abuse as well as rape, murder, and drugs. Oh and throw in some romance and intense sex scenes. Very intense but very real life. I hated Nick!!! Hated. Easton and Elle’s sibiling relationship was how every brother and sister should be. But it killed me on how they were brought up and everything about their father. Latham had my heart from the beginning. Their friendship and relationship was everything! Elle should have stepped away from Nick MUCH sooner. Thought this would be more of just a romance novel and ended up getting a murder mystery romance that did not disappoint.

I'm still reeling in all the feelings this book brought out. It is dark and full of trauma, but aren't all the most worthwhile roads paved in pain? Ember Nicole seems to think so because she took absolutely zero mercy with this one. Elle is one of my new favorite FMCs! This girl is the epitome of strong. Latham, first and foremost-every woman needs a Lay! I absolutely love a cocky alpha-hole (pun intended) and he brings that in spades. I'm convinced no one does chemistry and banter better than Ember Nicole. Her internal monologues are absolutely hilarious and pure perfection! If you haven't read this book yet GO. DO. IT. NOW. You can thank me later. *Be sure to read the trigger warning first though!

AMAZING!!😱😱 what a nail biting debut novel for Ember Nicole! Elle and Latham share a complicated and intertwined relationship after growing up next door to each other. We follow their journey as Elle tries to run from her past to a brighter future that might not be all that bright. What a gripping story that had me hooked from the start!

**4.5 rounded up**

This book is very intense. I can understand that if you haven’t experienced some of the events that are discussed, you might not understand or you might even be disgusted. And if you have experienced some of the things Elodie has, it could be very triggering. However, I feel like the events that happened in this book (and the world, for that matter) should 100% be discussed. Think “It End With Us” but better, more intense, more mature, and NOT romanticized.

Every character was toxic (yes even daddy Latham at times). I’m positive I wanted to slap everyone at least once (some more than others, iykyk). The plot was a slow-burn, but it was necessary to tackle Elodie’s past before getting to the HEA.

𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐒:
Brother’s best friend
Childhood friends to lovers
Morally grey characters
Toxic relationships
Touch her and get unalived

𝐓𝐖: rape (on & off page), physical abuse, damaged past, emotional abuse, manipulation, gaslighting, murder, prostitution, drugs

This is by far the most underrated book I have ever read

This is a new to me author, this is her debut book and it reads like she has been writing books for years. The plot is crazy intense and action packed and I highly recommend everyone read this.
I read this in a matter of hours - literally inhaled the words

This does have dark elements with list of TW for both on and off page so check those out first but everyone else - enjoy the crazy

This book seems to be COMPLETELY under-rated. I picked it up from a suggestion of another reader here.
Now, there are TWs that you should check for, BUT, to be honest, they are not so strong as to prevent most from reading.

This was adorable, sweet, romantic, scary, and anger inducing.
There are a few things that the reader may get hung up on (background on a few characters, mostly) but overall, I suggest this for a breezy light read that is thoroughly entertaining.

Not often does a book really touch my emotions deeply, but this book was a rare story that did. It hit my emotions so hard that I had to take breaks from reading it a few times. Because of that it was difficult to try to come up with a review for it. After a lot of thought on this I can say I hated this book. I hated this book because it truly made me anger. I hated this book because I overwhelmingly wanted to yell WTF at the lead characters on many occasions. Because of that I have to say the author did a great job writing this! Whether you like it, love it, or hate it, you’ll be moved by it. Sometimes the greatest compliment you can give an author is that they moved you.

This isn’t the type of book I normally read. Which is why I was extremely shocked as I read it how engaged I found myself in the story and the character development. I strongly suspected this book to be your classic smut. Maybe give us 10-15 pages of intro then dump sweaty 6 packs & throbbing eggplants on the readers. Many times, I had to stop & ask myself what is this book? It felt like a crime mystery more than a romance. For me I loved that part of the story. Worry not smut mamas you will find your sex; it just took some time. I think overall the spice is medium level but what you get is extremely condensed & very hard & raw. Not my juice, but I think for many readers they’ll drink it by the bucket. This book beats trigger warnings like a hammer into the back of your skull, so if you’re troubled easily this book is not for you! If you like extreme trauma & psycho people, this will be your new comfort series!

For many reasons this is hard to rate. The story building & mystery are amazing. The characters pull you into their world in a great duel POV delivery, but at points for many reasons, it was difficult to read without wanting to hit someone. Overall, I think it’s a great book if you don’t mind the extreme nature of the story, but the characters made me angry a lot at them so maybe just shy of a homerun. I’m happy I read it & I will gladly read this author again but be prepared to have your emotion run through a woodchipper! You've been warned! 😉👍

I’m sorry…. WHAT. My mind is blown. Idk where I expected this story to go but I did not expect a lot of this. Elle truly was broken this woman had lived through such horrific circumstances her entire life and her strength to keep going and to keep fighting is beyond incredible. I relate to Elle and Easton’s relationship so much the fact that he always took care of her and they only had each other until Lathe moved in next door. LATHAM that man is just to DIE for. He was so intense and so…. DADDY 😂 This was a emotional rollercoaster for me I cried, I screamed, I may or may not have threw it across the room at some point 😬, I laughed, I loved. Ember I always end up hating you at some point in your books but it’s always with so much love for the way you bring out my emotions and pull things out of me and heal them just a little more. I’m so thankful to be a Heathen…. Now wish me luck while I dive into book 2 😂☠️

“I told you I was going to hurt you princess.” And that you did Ember.
I came to a realization while reading this book that Ember is just an amazing story teller. A lot of authors are really great at coming up with this elaborate plots with twists and turns but they don’t have the magic to make you FEEL like you’re about to jump off the cliff with the characters. Ember has the ability to do both - come up with heartbreaking stories, but also submerse the reader so deeply into that story that their heart breaks right along with the characters. This book, like her others, ripped me open and sewed me right back up. I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted so much in an e-book before. I highlighted every time a piece of my heart broke off and I’m not sure I have any left.

Rating: 5/5
Spice: 2/5
Spice/Plot Ratio: 20/80
Tropes: Dark romance, brother's best friend, slow burn
TWs: Murder, DV, SA, rape (to FMC), violence (always check for more I may have missed)
Misc: strong female main character, possessive and protective male main character, dual POV, suspense, HEA

I loved this book! This book is dark and would be a tough read at times for certain triggers. Ember Nicole gave a very realistic and gritty view of DV. The plot from start to finish kept me incredibly interested in how everything would pan out. I usually don't like friend-t0-lovers, but the relationship between Latham and Elodie was tragically beautiful in every way. The spice was minimal but when it did occur, it spanned a few chapters. And the tension created was amazing. I loved this story, the writing, the character. Everything.

This book caused me to have high blood pressure. I wanted to strangle most of the characters at times and everything felt so out of control and chaotic. I absolutely loved every minute of it.

This is a truly beautiful, dark, frustrating, and heartbreaking. Ember truly blew me away with the twist towards the end of the book that I didn’t see coming. Read your trigger warnings before diving into this one folks - it’s hard at times but if you can handle it… it’s 100% worth the heartache.

I have no idea where to start with this book, WOW!

It gave me everything; angst, laughs, connections, spice and a dabble of insanity… chefs kiss! 🤌🏻

I LOVE the relationship that Latham, Elle & East all share, bonded through trauma and it is b-e-a-uuuu-tiful! 🫶🏻

I’ve immediately downloaded the sequel & can’t wait to get stuck in 😍

Just WOW. Ember Nicole you love make us suffer!! This was a roller coaster of emotions! I can’t believe this was her debut novel, I’m you fan 🥰😂 The whole story was amazing, very dark, and unexpected as well. A lot of my emotions were there, while reading I hate some characters and love others. Latham is a sexy toxic person, and Ellie is a beautiful broken mess. Never expected the twist at the end. I’m looking forward to read book 2 and all your books honestly!

I… but like… and they… then he… and she … AGHHHH!!!

Absolutely love this. Obsessed with it. In love. Hurt? Yes. But the ending was so worth it 😭😭😭

Lay is honestly perfect. Idc what anyone says, he is PERFECTION. I adore him! The way this man will do ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING to protect her … ugh 🥹

Elle.. baby, come here, let me hug you 🥺❤️ love the way she carried herself- actually, we need to talk about some things… iykyk— but other than that, she’s a beautiful soul who must be protected at all cost 🫶🏻

And the spice - WITH THE RIGHT PERSON - was spicing when it spiced 🥵🥵

Nick, you piece of shit, go fuck yourself dude. And if I’m being honest, what you got IS SOOOO NOT what you deserved. You should be glad that I wasn’t the one in Elle’s place, you lying ass, manipulative ass, gaslighting ass, insecure ass little dickless piece of trash.

Okay, thank you.

My Brother’s Problem-Ember Nicole
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
TW: DV, SA, violent sexual encounters
Tropes: Dark romance, thriller, friends to lovers, brother’s best friend, childhood friends to lovers

What. The. Fuck.
The roller coaster of emotions this book took me on.
I need a cocktail.
I need a Xanax.
I need a massage (preferably with a happy ending because DADDY LATHAM HELLO??)
This book was dark and twisty and made me feel an untethered feminine rage that crept up from the depths of my SOUL and burned with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. It made me sad and insanely happy and also made me laugh out loud right after I gasped out loud at the sheer sexiness that is Latham Williamson.
You ride the wave of loving and wanting to dropkick every character (well, okay ALMOST every character) in this book again and again. One of the most unputdownable books I’ve read so far this year!!

this was my last read of 2022

i had no info really about this book going into it, this was my first indie author read.

i normally have issues “getting into” books but i had zero issue with this book, from the first chapter i was hooked.

I thought this was strictly a romance book but its alot more than that! there are so many plot twists, mysteries, drama, dark af moments (check TW for this one folks), and alot of character growth.

This story is definitely darker, the characters have a trauma filled past that some readers dont enjoy. If your a dark reader gal like me, this ones for u.

I loved the relationships in these books, it features such an adorable group of friends & family. I loved the dynamic between the 4 main characters.

one thing i didnt love….nick. no further comments.

On the romance side, i absolutely swooned. From page 3 this book is jam packed with angst and the slow burn of a lifetime. The FMC and MMC have such a beautiful relationship from beginning to end of this book…towards the end is my fav tho😏. Latham absolutely set the standard for men, the way he cared for the FMC is absolutely GOALS.
I thought this book played between spice and plot SO well. This was definitely on my top 10 for 2022 reads. I wanna start reading more indie authors now because of this!

would i reccomend? 100% yes
spice level? 3.5/5🌶

Indie author, Ember Nicole’s debut novel, My Brother’s Problem, is a brilliant and gut wrenching love story that will force you to stay up past your bedtime to finish! This book is full of spice, angst, as well as a dark-and-twisty underbelly, that will leave you rooting for Elodie and Latham from chapter one all the way through the final pages. Ember Nicole’s literary voice is hauntingly beautiful, and I’m on the edge of my seat awaiting more stories for her to tell.

This book will forever hold a place in my heart. The emotional connection I have to Elodie and Latham’s relationship made me so emotional. Latham is her home, her safe space, and the amount of love I have for both of them is infinite. Having these amazing characters and then mixing in the suspenseful, jaw dropping plot? Say less, I was hooked from page one. I went through an emotional rollercoaster following the progression of Elodie and Latham’s relationship while simultaneously trying to stay one step ahead of the plot and figure out who was behind it all.

IMPORTANT PSA: go pick up My Brother’s Problem by indie author Ember Nicole.

This dark and suspenseful romance is her debut novel and a shockingly good one at that. A definite must read for dark romance readers, but I also just generally recommend this book. Read the trigger warnings first though, there is some darkness here.

I am not a dark romance reader (unless maybe I am and just don’t know it?!) and I loved this book. I picked it up late last night and could not put it down. Was up all night. The characters were well-developed, the plot sucked me in right away, and the writing was excellent. I predicted all the twists and turns, but not because the plot was predictable. Instead, Ember did a masterful job of dropping little breadcrumbs that lead right to the answer right when she wanted me to have it.

Full disclosure, I won a signed copy of this novel from its author in a giveaway that she hosted on Instagram.

This book is a rollercoaster of emotions. It delves into sensitive topics that may make you uncomfortable, but it's crucial to have these conversations. We need to acknowledge the reality of the world we live in. Let's embrace discomfort and grow together.

Sometimes, we find ourselves immersed in a world where every character has some toxic traits, even the unexpected ones like Latham. This story may have had a slow-burn plot, but it was crucial to unravel Elodie's past before reaching the happily ever after we all long for.

I was deeply enthralled by the profound romance depicted in this book, infused with poignant emotions and a gradual development that endured the test of time. The exquisite bond between Elle and Latham from start to finish is genuinely mesmerizing, yet the conclusion particularly resonates with me 😉. Latham has established a benchmark for gentlemen with his compassion and empathy towards Elle. This literary work flawlessly harmonizes passion and storyline, engrossing you until the ultimate conclusion.

The tension growing between the two the entire book had me gigglin and blushing🤪 I am such a sucker for childhood friends to lovers/ next door neighbor/ brothers bff 🥺 Latham is the absolute fucking standardddddd
Absolutely enthralled by Easton being so supportive of them even when he was bleeding out 🤣 it’s such a breath of fresh air for the sibling to be so supportive right out of the gate. Can not wait to read My Sisters Solution !!!!

My Brothers Problem by Ember Nicole was an exciting introduction to this newly found Indie author! The first book in a two part series, MBP has everything from angst to spice to mystery with a sprinkle of longing and romance.

This story follows Elle as she deals with an emotionally and physically abusive boyfriend (a lawyer) and falls for her childhood friend, who happens to be her brothers best friend and a detective. Please read the trigger warnings as there are many, some off page but still worth taking into consideration.

The MMC, Latham, is an alpha-hole who, IMHO, is dynamite. I want a Latham. I want the way he is with Elodie- how protective and thoughtful he can be. This story also features Elodie’s brother and best friend as supporting characters, and they give to the story instead of taking away from it.

I loved this read and I’m so excited that the follow up to it is being released soon!! Grab this one and read it first!

This book was absolutely incredible! I couldn’t believe this was Ember Nicole’s debut book. Truth be told, I read this as a ARC in November, but when I say this book is a read again, I’m not kidding.
My Brothers Problem gave me all the damn feels.

Ember brought these characters to life and made me fall in love with them all, except for Nick fucking Philips.

Elle is a damn badass and I have nothing but respect for her. Lathe was absolutely swoon worthy through every single encounter. Everyone deserves a sibling like Easton, and everyone needs a best friend like Callie.
I read this book like one would watch a movie, I screamed at the characters, I clutched my blankets and wanted to throw my book at the intense moments, and I’m not even going to go into chapter 28, but damn 🥵.

Bottom line, if you haven’t read this book, you definitely need to. You really won’t regret it.

I was between a four and five star on this, I loved Elle till around chapter 5 and then I was mad at her till chapter 26/27. Chapter 28 things started moving fast and HOT! I had my suspicions from the start about what secrets she was keeping from Lath that the synopsis hints at. There was plenty of twist and turns in this and I almost didn’t catch on till Lath did towards the end. I usually don’t read slow burn but the mystery in this kept me intrigued till the very end. If you love dark romance, murder mystery/crime, and a female lead that steps up and takes initiative then this book is for you! Check your warnings on this, it’s dark and twisted! I like my books to hit all my emotions and Ember did not disappoint with the way she spun this story!
