Nouri had suspected the humans would ignore the treaty. He hadn’t expected to be caught in a poacher’s snare—or to become a ‘pet’ to the young woman who found him. He certainly hadn’t expected to find himself torn between his desire for the Earthling, Cara, and his duties to his people.
Cara hated everything about being a colonist on an alien world—until the day she discovered that the ‘sacred woods’ was as magical a place as it appeared to a young girl’s eyes and rescued a winged, lion-like beast that looked remarkably like the manticore of mythology. It was unfortunate that she came to think of the scared woods as her own special place since the natives considered it off-limits to all humans—not everyone except her.
Born on a bayou, Angelique Anjou’s roots are cajun, but she makes her home now in the foothills of the Smokies, where she lives with her husband and son. As a late blooming Trekkie, science fiction and fantasy are the tales she cut her teeth on, and the genres, next to romance, that are most dear to her heart.
Given the heroine's age at the time, the "licking all over" was a little cringe-worthy.
This story was easy to read, short, and to the point. I love O'connor or should I say (Anjou) so I am a bit biased. Just enough sexy parts to match the length of the story.
I thought I'd read all the authors books so I was so happy I found this one.
You know what's really frustrating when reading a book on a Kindle? Getting to 68% and seeing "The End" Although this book finished earlier than I would have liked, I really enjoyed the story. I liked the characters, the world, and the resolution of their situation.
Not my favorite by this author. I didn't really care for the hero that much, he seemed so bitter for no good reason.
Cara and a bunch of other people from Earth landed on Nouri's planet and made a treaty re the land that was allotted to this new colony with the added caveat that they never enter the forbidden forest - which of course a lot of people ignored including Cara. While Cara is in the forest Nouri reads her mind and becomes a mythological creature she had been thinking of. Nouri and his people are like Chameleons, able to change shapes to whatever they want. Nouri is entranced by Cara but the only problem is she's 14, which is marrying age for Nouri, not the people from Earth. About 10 years later, he still can't get her off of his mind and sees her again in the "forbidden" forest.
I'm planning on reading the author's other books, even though I didn't like this story as much as I liked her other ones.
The book was really a nice read. I was totally engrossed in the world building and characters until the end. This book could have been a higher rating if the end wasn't so abrupt. I'm sure the author could have made the book longer and gave a more encompassing ending that tied all the problems together since a lot of the political problems are left hanging. As a reader I feel insulted since the main reason for the protagonists to stay apart is completely nonsense at the end of the book where no repercussions are discussed as a result of the couple's joining.
