I grew up in Southern California before moving to the Bay Area right around the turn of the century. I've been here ever since.
It was shortly after I first moved to the bay that I started to write. This is when I first created "The Third Party". Shortly after I started participating in writing contests online.
A few years after moving to the Bay, I also met the woman who would become my wife. I can assure you she is incredible, as she somehow has managed to deal with me, and even love me in spite of my...idiosyncrasies.
Now, here we are, two children later, and a wonderful life. I've finally released some of that writing out to the world, and am working on bringing more as I continue to tell the story of The Third Party.
Time On Earth: This was a super fun and detailed story! While the audience level is more advanced, it almost reminded me of the Goosebumps stories I read as a kid — specifically the ones where the characters turned out to be aliens and such. The ending, too, was very R.L. Stine-esque — he’s known for his cliffhanger endings and shocking last-minute plot twists, and the end result in this story very much reminded me of that. I liked the little bit of humor that was thrown in and, overall, I think the characters and the conflict were very detailed, given the brevity of the story!

Project Fusion: While I’ve yet to read every book in the Jill Andersen series, I am familiar with the characters and background and I really liked how Cunegan wove Jill’s world into this short story. I think Project Fusion runs as an awesome, action-packed short story on its own, but it’s also a *great* introductory into Jill’s world, and I definitely think readers will easily become hooked enough to want to check out the main series. I could definitely see this story playing out in, like, an action movie — the imagery was fantastic. An awesome, epic story for any fan of action and/or sci-fi!

Abaddon: This story gave me big Supernatural vibes, but it was also very unique in exactly *who* was attacking the demons. I love the Point of View used in this story and I think Byers did an excellent job in setting up the Underworld setting. It was also sort of amusing, in a way — the story starts off with one of the demons “crashing through the dark and ornate palace doors” in a panic, and I just love the idea of these demons having a very human-style freak out. This was definitely fun read, and, like the Time On Earth story, had an absolutely *excellent* ending.

Sota: Another action-packed sci-fi read! I’m not usually so into action-packed fight scenes, but this short story was very intriguing and intense as heck all at the same time. It also gave me similar vibes to J.D. Cunegan and his Jill Andersen series, so I think fans of one author would very much enjoy the other. The injuries sustained in the fight scene were described particularly well, and I love how this story wrapped up. I won’t spoil anything else since it is a short story, but it all just kinda wraps up like, “Oh, okay, so this is my life now,” and I love it. Overall, a very entertaining read!

Finding Her Niche: So I’m not sure how big Leslie Conzatti’s bibliography is, but this is the first story I’ve read by this author that isn’t about fantastical mermaids. And, I love her mermaid stories — but I actually really, really loved this too, and think this was an excellent change of pace. Superheroes aren’t really my thing (says the Hugh Jackman stan 🤦🏽♀️), but this was a super fun read, and I LOVE how the ending played out. This collection has been EXCELLENT so far with its last-minute twist endings, but I think the “big reveal” in this story just may be my favorite so far. This was just written in a way that is totally captivating, and I recommend this story to anyone, whether superheroes are your thing or not!

Agents of the Third Party: Red Hand Day: My favorite thing about this story is the main character. He’s an absolutely snarky bastard, and I love him, lmfao. As for the overall plot, it reminded me of, like, an older, adult-audience level version of Alex Rider. It’s another action-packed spy story, similarly along the lines of Project Fusion and Sota, and I think those three stories would attract a very similar sort of audience. This story utilized real-life current events and politics — I literally did a double-take when COVID was mentioned — and I think those parallels to the real world were very cool to read about. Overall, as with Project Fusion and Sota, I would recommend this story to any fan of action and/or spy fiction!

Midnight At The Five And Dime: This story definitely took a turn I was not expecting. It’s more-or-less the definition of, “Well, that escalated quickly,” lol. I do think the second half of the story, and especially the ending, were a little abrupt, but this definitely was not a bad read, and the theme is very sobering. AI is something that is constantly growing and becoming more advanced with every day, and I think this story definitely provides a thought-provoking “What if” scenario.

Arisen: I have never read a ‘zombie’ story quite like this. In Arisen, you have your typical event that triggers a ‘zombie outbreak’ — in this case it’s a pandemic, which, I must say, is very fitting — but the ‘zombies’ themselves massively deter from what most people think of when they think of the ‘traditional’ zombie. I’m not a huge reader of zombie/outbreak fiction in general so I’m kind of partial to the differences, but I’d be very interested to know what a more avid reader of outbreak fiction would think. Overall, though, I think this short story was very interesting, and, as said above, I would definitely recommend fans of zombie fiction to check it out!

Defending Azazel: This story is similar to The Green Mile in that you know what’s going to happen, know he doesn’t deserve it, and yet you can’t do anything about it. I think this story handles ‘controversial’ topics, like morale in the military, superbly well, and, at the same time, it is simply devastating. The last scene, in particular, really hits home — and, as said above, tugs at the same emotions that The Green Mile did. This story just really, really fucks with your conscience and your sense of “right vs. wrong” and, though it is intense, I highly recommend for anyone who thinks they can handle that!

The Union: I think this story is particularly great for any lover of sci-fi. Or, heck, I would even recommend it for anybody looking to get into sci-fi who doesn’t quite know where to start. Unfortunately, I had a lot of interruptions in the middle of this story which made me have to start and stop reading abruptly, and I think this story is best read sitting down, no interruptions, in one go. But it is intriguing as hell and, as somebody who particularly likes time travel/parallel universe stories, I liked this a lot. Definitely an intriguing read!

The Inbetweens: I really, really like the idea this story was trying to convey — parallel universes and other worlds and all that — but I’m not really a huge fan of how it was executed. The Inbetweeners, like every other story in this anthology, is a short story, and I feel like the author was trying to pack Too Much information in not enough space. And, the introduction of the “other world” was a bit confusing — the story starts off talking about World War II and I was led to believe that it was going to be a time travel story or something. Close, but not quite, and I think it was a little misleading. And — this part is 100% just preference — I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style. I still think fans of sci-fi and/or parallel universes should give this story a go! It just wasn’t quite my cup of tea.

* Overall Thoughts:
While there were some stories I liked more than others, I think that is absolutely natural in an anthology, especially one as big as this. As far as anthologies go, I think that, overall, this one was absolutely top quality. Most, if not all, of the authors who participated in this anthology also put together another collection that I read awhile back, which I remember also liking a whole lot. You can tell that each author puts incredible effort into their portion and it really comes together quite nicely.
Each story is absolutely packed with imagery. No matter the subgenre or overall theme of the individual story, I think the imagery was one of the biggest selling points across the board. And, the plot twists! A lot of these stories had twist endings that I found absolutely *delightful.* Twist endings that literally make my jaw drop are some of my favorite things in fiction and I will never get enough. I love when a plot twist slams into you like a freight train! Time on Earth, Abaddon, and Finding Her Niche was especially memorable in their endings, in my opinion!
Among this collection, which was absolutely packed with 4 and 5 star reads, I think that my personal favorites were “Finding Her Niche” and “Abaddon.” As I said above, I love their twist endings, and these two stories had the kind of themes that just clicked the most with *my* personal tastes. But, I truly think this collection has something for everyone!
Overall, I definitely recommend this anthology to any avid sci-fi fan, or even anyone looking to get into sci-fi for the first time! While some of them had slightly similar themes, I think these stories are diverse enough that most readers will find several stories they enjoy!
