The Last Vampire #1-3

The Last Vampire: Books 1-3

Rate this book
There’s a smokin’ hot dead guy locked in my garden shed.
That part’s bad enough. But now, he’s trying to get out.

Growing up, my father always told me that I’d come to a bad end, just like my mom did when I was a kid. Hearing that kind of stuff when you’re little eventually gets to a girl, but I can’t say I ever expected my ‘bad end’ to involve an angry vampire with a severe case of iron deficiency and a panty-melting English accent.

Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. Ever since my mother was assassinated, I’ve felt like there was something vast and frightening hidden beneath the fabric of the world. Something none of us are supposed to know about.

So far, finding out I was right hasn’t been nearly as satisfying as I’d hoped. I guess the trick will be staying alive long enough to shout ‘I told you so’ from the rooftops.

But before I can do that, I really need to figure out if the vampire who just bit me is one of the good guys or not.

USA Today bestselling author R. A. Steffan lives in New Mexico, where the sunsets paint the mountains purple, and roadrunners roam the desert endlessly in search of their coyote victims. When she’s not busy writing stories about people loving each other in all sorts of different and interesting ways, she can be found taking care of her small menagerie of critters.

A rebel to the core, she is currently sticking it to the man by illegally harvesting graywater from the kitchen and bathroom sinks to water trees outside. This fearless disregard for societal norms extends to her writing, as well. There, you will find polyamory along with straight, gay, bisexual, and non-gender conforming love of all flavors. You will also find families of choice, profound friendships, adventure, danger, and good triumphing over evil.

That, and sex. Lots of sex. Most of which is not the vanilla variety.

2.5 round up

I wrote individual reviews for each book in this compilations. But my overall take away is that there is no reason for it to have been padded and broken into 6 book that have to ALL be read for a single pay off in the last book. I call these serials, as opposed to series and wish they were labeled as such. Though I'll take credit for not putting together that these all have the same title So maybe I should have figured out sooner that it's a single continuous story.

Part 1

Meh, I didn’t hate this. The writing is fine and I appreciated some of the humor. But the relationships aren’t developed at all. The hero and heroine literally have two less than 10 minute conversations (she literally has a 10 min alarm set during the second one) and then he’s rescuing her, they’re jumping into bed, and they’re apparently a couple for life. And I don’t just mean that makes the sex feel rushed. Even the friendship feels out of nowhere. Then the book ends on a giant cliffhanger. So, I’m pretty “meh” on the whole thing. I also didn’t particularly care for the narrator. There was nothing objectively wrong with the performance, but I found it a little on the whiny side.

Part 2

I’m finding that I don’t much like Zorah. I find her whiny and prone to too-stupid-to-live decisions (the narrator’s style might have something to do with this impression), and I’m finding that the woman-gagging-for-sex feels like it plays too closely into the subtle Western myth that woman can’t be trusted with their own sexuality because they’re just inherently weak to their own impulses. Plus, being part succubus was just really cliched and predictable. I do find some of the banter between Rans and her funny and there’s really nothing wrong with the writing itself. I’m just not much liking the main character and I’m a bit bored with the story as a whole.

Part 3

Having finished this 3rd book in the series (the last I have, since I was listening to the compilation of the 1st 3 books), I’m still pretty meh on the whole thing. Plus, I’m finding that I really resent that I’ve read 3 books (600+ pages, almost 21 hours of audio) and gotten no conclusions in any of the books. They each just randomly stop. Which, of course, means there won’t be any kind of satisfaction in book 4 or 5. So, I’d need to read or listen to a further 600 pages or another 20+ hours of audio to get a single conclusion. The simple fact is that I’m just not that invested. Hoopla has the audio of books 4-6, so they’re available to me (even if I didn’t want to buy them) but I don’t think I’ll bother. Which means I’ll never know how it ends and have just wasted 20+ hours of time listening to what is essentially half a story.

And let me tell you it is FULL of filler to stretch the story over 6 books; you especially feel that in this 3rd book. I was just bored with a lot of it, especially all the sex/succubus stuff. By which I don’t just mean the sex (there’s not actually that much of it, compared to what could have been), but all the testing this and trying that, the fetish club and play and requisite description of the outfits, her sexy shows, etc, etc. I was BORED. The whole thing drags like the middle of a book…like the middle it is.

I was also seriously tired of all of her “woe is me, no one could love me” doubt of Rans and the veracity of their relationship. It was tedious and silly. The man had already bound himself to her FOR LIFE. I think it was abundantly clear how he felt, so her continued doubt felt like the contrived plot device it was.

Again, the actual writing itself is fine and the audio versions seem pretty well done. It’s not an issue with quality I have, but with the style of breaking books into serials that have to be read as a whole. This is a personal preference kind of thing, but I’m pretty done with it.

Audible listen. Narrator did a good job; overly dramatic at times, but a quality performance. She does make the lead character sound clueless and a bit annoying, but I kind of think that’s how the character actually is, so it works. Overall, I enjoyed the listen!

This set features the first 3 books of this series and does end in a cliffhanger, so you’ll need to read the next books for the full story. I believe the series goes up to 6 books.

I went back and forth between a 3 and a 4 rating; I ended up going with a 4 because I was entertained the whole time. Plus, I really enjoy the overall premise for the story, woman finds out she’s not all human, and finds herself dealing with vampires and fae. Turns out that there are those in the paranormal world that don’t appreciate what type of paranormal she is, so she’s in tons of danger. Zorah, the woman whose POV this whole story is in, finds herself fumbling along trying to survive this new crazy paranormal world she finds herself in. Zorah has many problems to deal with; lots of dangerous individuals out to get her. Zorah’s actions tend towards the not so smart variety. She doesn’t plan, she just acts, which leads to many more problems for her. Zorah can be annoying, but I do appreciate that she has a good heart and is willing to go above and beyond for those she cares about. Luckily, vampire Rans helps her out. All of that is a cool setup! What didn’t quite pull me in to the story was: the story does move a bit too slow at times; I wanted more action, but does pick up as the series goes on. Also, I’m not a fan of stories featuring the type of paranormal Zorah is; makes the story too sexually focused for my liking and the romance doesn’t have the depth of emotion that I prefer, the romance is more of a lust type of thing. Also, I prefer more sensual, passionate love scenes rather than scenes that are more on the raunchy side. The romance does develop as the series progresses, and I do enjoy the connection between Rans and Zorah. I’m interested to see where the story goes, so I’ll continue on. The overall story ideas are fun and interesting!

Book 1

Zorah Bright is a a broke waitress with a fucked-up, dysfunctional family life and a history of being dumped by her boyfriends. Zorah's belief that there's something dangerous hidden beneath the fabric of the world is vindicated when her world is upended. Zorah's on the run to meet her father when she's grabbed by Caspian Werther, a Fae. Turns out Zorah's a succubus hybrid, a demon, and the Fae think that her very existence is a criminal abomination and she needs to be destroyed. Zorah is saved by the handsome Ransley Thorpe, the last vampire. but can he be trusted?

Book 2

Zorah's father had been distant and neglectful after his wife was killed when Zorah was 6 but he's all she has left. So when Zorah finds out the Fae have her father, she needs to know if he'd intended to help her or betray her. Rans warns Zorah he's not good enough for her but who can blame a girl for falling for a guy after he saved her from monsters, protected her, watched over her and said nice things to her? Which is why Zorah wants to make one final, grand gesture before the Fae snuff out her existence. Is this the end for Zorah or will Rans save the day again?

Book 3

Rans saves the day again and Zorah is now safe from the Fae but she still needs answers. So when Zorah's father is sent to Hell by the Fae as a titheling to the demons, she leaves Rans behind and heads to Hell. But will Zorah be able to get the answers she seeks now that her father's mind has been broken by the Fae? While Zorah is in Hell, she learns something so disturbing that she's shaken to the core. Someone Zorah has put her trust in can't be trusted. Which means that Rans may be in danger too. Will Zorah be able to find Rans and warn him?

The Last Vampire is a funny, suspenseful and steamy series that you won't be able to put down. I can't wait to read Book 4 of The Last Vampire series.

Fairies, demons and one vampire

This is a story about the aftermath of a war between demons and fairies that ended more than 200 years prior. Zorah gets thrown into this world when she discovers Rans in her tool shed. Zorah is a waitress whom has become sick/weak over the past several years and doesn't understand why until Rans explains it. Then they are thrown into an action packed few months where they are trying to save each other. Not really knowing whom they can trust, and whom their true enemies are. This collection gives you a great start into this series, it just didn't grab my attention and keep it like others in this same category. Which is why I have the 4 star 🌟 rating.

Book 1
I really enjoyed this book. There’s a lot of foundation laying in this first book which is needed to put everything in place. The humour is great. I was laughing so much! Gwendolyn is amazing, perfect performance.

Book 2
This series is really heating up. The characters are brilliant, Gwendolyn is absolutely fantastic, I could listen to her all day and night. Great storyline.

Book 3
Oh this series just keeps on getting better and better! I love the dynamic of these characters. Excellent writing and a fantastic performance from Gwendolyn. Book 4 here I come!!!!

I have enjoyed reading this author for the first time writing about one of my favorite genres, vampires. The premise is fantastic: A young woman discovers a vampire, Ransly, in her tool shed. She is soon attacked by fae who want her dead because she is unknowingly part demon, violating a-hundred-year-old peace treaty. Unexpectedly, the English vampire Ransly comes toorah's rescue.

From moment, an adventure begins that involves stopping a war that will dec both and humans. I'm excited to see Zorah grow into her newfound power and her relationship with the snarky 700-year-old vampire, Rans.

This series of 6 books is one of my all-time go-to reads when I need to escape the worlds inside my own head. You can never go wrong with a sexy British vampire and a snarky human-fae-demon-vampire hybrid. As an author, we don't get much time to sit down and read. I love that with this series, and pretty much all of R.A. Steffan's works, she offers the audiobook as well. And I might add, that her narrator Gwendolyn Druyor is freaking amazing!! She is one of my favorites.

A surprise

I originally started to read this series not expecting much, sometimes skimming just to get through. However the more I read the deeper I got into the characters and the slower the page turning. Thus now I am finding myself actually moving onto the next book as I want to know what actually happened to the cast of characters. Go figure!!

An enjoyable melding of fae, demon, human, and vampire

Not your typical urban fantasy. An intriguing blend of fae mythos, demonology, and humanity. Not a yoing adult book. Very good.

Wow!

For a big RA Steffan fan but not a fan of vampires mostly, I've held off reading this series. My mistake!!! I'm glad I've read these 3 together & that book 4 isn't far off. Keep up the good work guys!

Enjoyable

This has been a fun series to read. The frustrating part is that there are too many books in the series. After 3, I am pretty much done and ready to move on to something else. Especially when after 3 books there is not a HEA.

This was such a pleasant surprise! I went in expecting a junky, throwaway read. But what u got was an interesting, flawed but compelling main character; a dreamy vamp love interest; a fresh take on paranormal world- building; and some wild plot twists.

Didn't get through the first book because the narrator was a poor choice for these characters.
