MP3 CD Format As a forty-three-year-old, newly divorced, single mom, I know two things for starting over sucks, and magic isn't real. At least that's what I thought. I mean, starting over really does stink, but when it comes to magic, I have to rethink everything. I've spent the last year since my ex left me going through the motions. Get up. Work. Care for a grumpy teenager. Cook dinner. Go to bed. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Nothing changes ... Until it does. After bidding on a box of old books at an estate auction, I'm experiencing changes. And I'm not talking about menopause. My garden gnome Linda has come to life. No, really. Her name is Linda, and she never shuts up. A chonky cat with a few secrets of his own has adopted me. And a gorgeous professor of the occult tells me I'm a witch. Right now, I'm not sure who's crazier--me, Linda, or the hottie professor. If this is my new reality, it's nature's cruel midlife trick. I'm learning fast that Earth spells might be easy, but they aren't cheap. All magic exacts a toll, and if I don't master the elements, the elements will be the death of me. Literally.
About Renee: USA Today Bestselling author Renee George writes paranormal mysteries and romances because she loves all things whodunit, Otherworldly, and weird. Also, she wishes her pittie, the adorable Kona Princess Warrior, and her beagle, Josie the Incontinent Princess, could talk. Or at least be more like Scooby-Doo and help her unmask villains at the haunted house up the street.
When she’s not writing about mystery-solving werecougars or the adventures of a hapless psychic living among shapeshifters, she is preyed upon by stray kittens who end up living in her house because she can't say no to those sweet, furry faces. (Someone stop telling them where she lives!)
She resides in Mid-Missouri with her family and spends her non-writing time doing really cool stuff...like watching TV and cleaning up dog poop.

Earth Spells are Easy by Renee George Grimoires of a Middle-Aged Witch series #1. Women’s Adult paranormal fiction. 43 year old Iris finds out she’s a witch. Now her garden gnome is talking and trying to train her and she’s gained a familiar named Bob. And wow, Keir tells Iris his whole life is dedicated to her alone. No pressure, but Iris needs to figure out her powers before it’s too late.
Kooky and intriguing. Linda the gnome is sarcastic and Bob doesn’t need a litter box. And we definitely need to know more about Keir. Fast moving and easy to read, it’s a paranormal witch series that I will absolutely read more of.
I am not the target audience for this, according to the subtitle : A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel "It was oddly comforting having one aspect of my life that didn’t revolve around my divorce, my kid, or tru-craft." "“What happened to me when I was born is a rarity now, even as it was back in Merlin’s day. Druids do seek out those of the tru-craft and act as guides. We seek to get as many to the other side of their magic without dying. It’s one of our many acts of faith. But what I have with you, the way we are connected only happens once every millennium. You are the Arthur of this time.”" "He looked away. “I wish I could tell you.” “But telling me changes the future,” I said. Keir nodded. “What I can say is that what’s coming will require you to be at your full strength, so you have to do everything possible to conquer terra-craft. It is the only way to protect yourself.”" This “cosy supernatural “ has some snappy dialogue and some clever “monsters.” I will have more to say in my review of Spell on Fire …. Coming soon
At first I didn’t know if I would like the book as the first couple of chapters were a bit sad, but then pops in a German rude garden gnome and then it’s fantastic! I started laughing once that character started popping up literally in the garden and the house of the main character. I liked the twist at the end as well, which definitely grabs at you to read the second book. The main character is also lovable, especially because her internal monologue is hilarious and her interactions with her “protective” guardian. I really enjoyed these characters, and the world this author created.
This first book of Renee George's new PWF series is so, so good! Laughing my head off at times, sobering at others, but completely gripped from start to finish.
Iris is a freakishly awesome heroine and, let's face it, Keir is hot as all get out.
I can't wait for the next book because I really need more!!
Iris has just gotten back her freedom after a year and now she has a talking gnome in her garden. She and her sister go to an estate sale, and she meets a Keir whom her sister has been trying to get her to look at his book but he sort of helps her at the sale and she gets a box of books she was interested in but once she gets home and opens the book she finds information that leaves her shaking her head. She learns information from the book that provides her with some things she had no idea about. Iris is shocked when things start to happen because of the book and her spark of late in life magic that she doesn't understand but Keir who happens to be a teacher at the college is working with her because he's known her from birth as she works with Linda to help with her spells she is not paying complete attention to what she is supposed to be doing and wreaks havoc on herself and the town. This book is absolutely intriguing and the characters are entertaining, with lots of drama, suspense, mystery, danger, and adventure. I received an ARC via BookFunnel without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
Gee, she was middle-aged and for that, she got divorced, and more, oh not just menopause, but a new...ability or job or curse. She was not sure what to call it yet. At an attempted set up by her sister, she met Keir who was to mean a whole lot in her future and we aren't talking romance. Well, that is to be determined. A set of old books from an estate sale set off her scary new abilities. (She just had to learn how to use them in a cram-for-finals time frame.)
There are lots of characters to meet, some human, some who-knows-what. Some friend some foe. Figuring what side they were on was not gonna be easy. Meanwhile, her teenaged son was going through a lot from the divorce and his dad's decisions. Her family of siblings are on her side and want to help her live life to the fullest. Then there is Linda. A garden gnome--or living when she is teaching with her learn-from-mistakes method.
Action, surprises, bad guys, good guys, temptation and so much more. A true world-built-by-Renee. Great start to a new series. Can't wait for more.
Technically Bob isn't a cat, but he looks like one, so it counts. I really liked this book! Iris is in her early 40s and just divorced. She feels like her life is falling apart. She's an editor (yay!) and has a teenage son. Then her sisters drags her to an estate sale and she finds out she's a witch. Her garden gnome is really a gnome and Iris has a few days to learn how to use her magic or she'll literally burn up. She also has a druid named Keir who can turn into a Puca. Keir is great. I really loved the idea of coming into power later in life. That you have to learn to wield that power correctly. I can't wait to read the next one.
This book was so-so for me for awhile, but the last third of it sucked me in and now I would read the next. This is a fun story at first and it is mildly intriguing to understand the whys of Iris’ witchy-ness. But things took a twist and I was all in. At the end something pops up that makes me ok with the next book!
my first review didn't save so i am having to dig down deep in the memories for this, lol. i did really enjoy this book, i do remember not being sertain about the forthcoming relationship with the hot professor... that seemed a bit stalker-y. But Linda is worth any amout of sketchy relationships. She was the best! i want a garden gnome if they are all like her, lol. Worth the read, and i am excited to keep reading the series. i can't wait to see what Renee George comes up with next!
Lots of laugh-out-loud moments, a few scary ones, and a romantic kiss of two. An excellent beginning to a new series.
I am so looking forward to reading more in this series. Why? I love the characters.
Iris - 43 years old and starting fresh. She doesn't know what hit her. One minute she's signing divorce papers, the next she's told she is a witch, and if she doesn't get her powers under control she will turn to ash. That is, if she doesn't kill everyone else by making the mountain explode. Great incentive, right?
Linda - the take-no-crap garden gnome. Bob - Iris's new cat/familiar Keir - The hottie professor. He is there to protect her, guide her, and might have a habit of kissing Iris once in a while.
The book was smooth and super easy to read. Being over the half-century mark I could easily relate to Iris. Below are two quotes from Iris's thoughts that resonated with me and most likely any woman over forty.
Note to self: No celebrating until the bladder is empty.
Dear Designer, I thought ruefully, pockets belong in all of women's wear.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a more mature heroine, lots of humor, and a magical twist or two.
Iris' life gets turned upside down. After finalizing her divorce, she finds out that she's a witch and her garden gnome, Linda comes to life. She is trying to deal with her regular life while trying to learn to control her magic.
There were times that this book made me laugh out loud. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
"Earth Spells are Easy" is book one in the "Grimoires of a Middle-Aged Witch" series by Renee George. I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to continue in this series. Iris is a middle-aged woman recently going through a divorce. She feels like she is going crazy and is having a lot of weird stuff happening to her. The humor in this book is awesome, and love love love Linda the Garden Gnome. I laughed out loud quite a few times while reading this. If you need a book that makes you laugh and smile, then this is the one for you.
Love the beginning of the series. We meet Iris who is on the other side of 40 who suddenly finds herself talking to a garden gnome that used to be solid stone. Next Iris goes to an estate auction and has a box of books call to her and she meets a very handsome Druid that will help her with the grimoire she just found. Iris needs to learn an encyclopedia amount of knowledge in the next four days to make sure she survives to the 5th day. Great world building and the dialogue between the characters is witty.
Iris’ life has taken a downhill turn, most recently with the signing of divorce papers. Imagine her surprise when a garden gnome starts talking to her and informs her that she is an earth witch. Add in a new familiar and a hunky protector and all she has to do is learn to control her powers before they turn her into dust. Why can’t life ever be easy? This was a fun and entertaining read.
Life is stale for newly divorced and single mom Iris. After winning a box of strange old books at an estate auction, she discovers she's a powerful witch. Her grumpy garden gnome Linda tries to teach her, and lovable cat, er, imp, Bob makes himself right at home. Plus handsome and charming Keir Quinn turns out to be more than just a professor. With the weight of all this new magic stuff and the stress of her divorce, Iris must find a way to master her magic before either someone else comes to suck it out of her or she burns herself out with her lack of control.
This was a fun and fast paranormal read. I always love stories where the heroine is a middle-aged parent with some intelligence and wisdom. She's frazzled by her husband cheating on her and their divorce, and the effect it's had on their teenage son. Iris also has a great relationship with her family, and it's wonderful to see their closeness and to know she has support. Linda the gnome is hilarious! She's my favorite part with a close second to Bob. Though I bet if Bob could cuddle up to me in real life, I'd be charmed just as thoroughly as Iris! There is still a lot to learn about the magic and the supernatural world in this story, but it is the first book of the series, and there's plenty of time to learn along with Iris.
I liked her style, and her interactions with her 17-year old son (taken, as she avers, from real life). The story is cute, if corny, with a stone gnome who comes to life as her mentor, and a no-food, no-poop imp posing as a cat, whose only job is to love her.
On the other hand, it's very poorly edited, which I always find particularly bothersome, I mean, what's hard about proofreading? But this is one of those authors bent on crankin' 'em out--which also bothers me. If you have 139 published books, as George does, you may be making money hands over fists, but as literature--? Pffft.
I naturally gravitate to books with/about/by witches, but most of them aren't very good. Sigh*
Some good and some bad. The idea of a perimenopausal witch was a great idea but I feel like the author either hasn’t experienced it or is making assumptions. Hitting 40 doesn’t mean you pee yourself… even when your bladder is full. And what on earth is a ‘braxton hicks coach’ 😂 I even tried to Google it as I’ve never heard of one (and I have 3 kids…) and Google had no results either! Some nice accurate mentions of the craft - always nice to see the 5 elements mentioned rather than 4. All in all a good book but the questionable parts stopped it being more than a 3 star

Damn disappointment… I liked the premise, loved the beginning, thought Iris was funny and her dynamic with Linda promising.
Sadly, the quality of the writing drops off dramatically halfway through, several typos and missing words plus when it gets to the actual action, everything is completely rushed. I feel like we spent more time exploring Iris‘ feelings about her divorce than her new magical abilities. Unfortunately, I won‘t be continuing this series….
Earth Spells Are Easy begins the Grimoires of a Middle-aged Witch series with a delightful, funny, magical journey with Iris as she faces some… unique challenges in life after her unexpected divorce. Sure she might be free but she’s also confused, hurt, and most definitely at a crossroads. One trip to an estate sale, one extraordinary book, and an introduction to a professor of the occult will spark magic within her that she’s never believed in, reveal that she is indeed a later life witch who is coming into her powers, and will bring not only unusual creatures into her life but danger as well.
I had fun with Iris, Keir, Linda (the garden gnome), and Bob (the imp/cat familiar)… and this story is a great introduction to this world as we watch Iris, with disbelief, encounter all sorts of new abilities. There might be romance in her future but for right now she’s trying to understand and get her Earth magic under control. Plus, fight off some really bad elementals who are after her magic.
I loved Iris’ snarkiness and often found myself chuckling out loud at her comments and antics. Linda, well, has exactly the personality I’d imagine a garden gnome would have… should one suddenly come to life in front of me. And Keir, I can’t wait to see how things are going to turn out with Keir as the series moves forward. Earth Spells Are Easy was definitely an entertaining few hours spent in a world that is a bit topsy-turvy for Iris until she begins to believe what her eyes (and skills) are showing her. If you love PWF then you’ll want to check out the start of this new series. I’ve got the next story already downloaded and ready to dive back into this world.
Earth Spells Are Easy by Rene George is the first book in the Grimoires of a Middle-Aged Witch. This is a paranormal, fantasy romance and is a fun and fast read. A little quirky and humorous.
Iris is in her forties and has just gotten divorced. She is trying to juggle work, a teenage son, and life in general, all while trying to get over her ex. At this point, she is just going through the motions but that is all about to change. She goes to an estate auction and bits on a box of old books which just happens to contain a Grimoire. Things are starting to get weird. Her garden gnome named Linda has come to life and won’t stop talking, and Linda is trying to train her. There is a cat hanging around that is a bit chonky and has secrets of his own. Oh, and she is being set up on a date with a good-looking professor of the occult who tells her she is a witch. Iris really thinks she is going crazy. She is starting to learn that the spells are easy, but they exact a toll and if she wants to survive, she needs to figure this out, and quick!
This is a great palate cleanser book filled with snarky humor, a kooky gnome, and Bob, Iris’ familiar. The pace is fast-moving and the magic system is interesting. Cozy and entertaining.
The plot is intriguing and the characters are all lovable. This is a great start to the series and I can’t wait to continue. Iris is a believable character that is relatable and her son is great too. Oh, and a touch of romance as well, what’s not to like!? 4.5 stars
Iris and her son are trying to make a new life for themselves after a bitter and strange divorce. But what does a talking, moving garden gnome she named Linda, a cat Iris named Bob and professor Kier have in common? This new series has a lot going for it! We are treated to laughs, intrigue and magic all the while watching our main character, Iris come into her own. Iris' sister convinces her at first against her will, to come to an estate sale. Her hidden agenda was to get her newly divorced single sister out of her funk to meet a friend and coworker professor Kier under the guise of editing his upcoming book which is what Iris does best. When the handsome professor meets Iris at the estate sale and steers her to a box of books, she bids on it going over the price she set for herself. She felt she was drawn to that box and must have it. Add to all this, the garden gnome talks to her, a shock at first, and tells Iris she is magic and only has a short time to learn how to handle and control her magic or she will just turn into dust. What would become of her son? So through some funny misadventures and mishaps, she doesn't have much time can she master her magic in time? And what is that book in the box she was told to look at that sends tingles to her fingers? This is a must read series if you want some intriguing, paranormal laugh out loud fun! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Know what has a middle-aged witch, a pudgy cat with no butt hole, a grumpy German garden gnome, and a sexy professor with secrets….this book!
Iris finds herself in her early forties, divorced, and raising her 17-year-old son. Her sister takes her to an estate sale where she is drawn to a particular antique book, and that is when things get a little crazy. She is informed by Linda that she is a witch and must master her craft quickly or there will be dire consequences. Oh, and did I mention that Linda is Iris’s cranky German garden gnome? With the help of Bob, her recently adopted cat, Kier, a professor with mysteries of his own, and of course, Linda, Iris has to get her magic under control before it destroys her.
Wow, this was such a fantastic story! I loved that the main character comes into her power at a more matured age. Renee also did a magnificent job making her characters realistic and funny! Iris is hilarious! She and Linda’s bantering had me in stitches. And Bob, that character is so precious that I really want a Bob in my life! I also liked that the book kept you guessing about the secrets surrounding the characters and how it would affect the plot. Loved Kier’s character! Again, it was nice to see a main male character in his 40s that is swoonworthy. This book had just the right amount of action, too. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes urban fantasy or books with magic and witches. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
This is a great first book to a new series, and a great addition to the Paranormal Women's Fiction books. Iris is a 43 year old recently (very recently) divorced woman with a teenaged son. Oh, did I mention she just learned she's a witch? A very powerful witch at that. Right now, with everything else going on in her life, she has to learn to control the magic that she never knew she had. Or turn to dust.
The characters are well written and the possible romance between Iris and Keir is slowly building which is good because at 43, just divorced, with a teenaged son and newly discovered magic, no one should just run into a romance. Linda the gnome is grumpy and sometimes not so nice to Iris, but there are times when you see that she really cares for Iris and just wants her to learn to control her magic before it is too late. As for Michael, Iris' 17 year old son, he is a typical teenage boy.
I loved this book and cannot wait for the second book. Renee George has hit it out of the park, again. If you've never read one of her books, this "Earth Spells Are Easy" is a great place to start. If you have read some of her books, you know that you should grab this one right now, before doing anything else, because all of her books are "can't miss".
