And Maybe They Fall In Love

Rate this book
All Elle Coker wants is to fade into the background. As a Reader with intrusive thoughts, she’s got enough on her mind — and it’s hard to blend when you’re in everyone’s head.

An out-of-state internship offers Elle a chance to escape her small-town life and use her Reading as a skill, not a curse. But changing cities doesn’t change who you are; the other interns still see Elle as a permanent outsider.

Enter Christopher, the concept artist with his own problems back home. And the smile that quiets the noise in Elle’s mind.

Elle and Christopher could fall in love. Maybe. But, as two people still trying to figure out how they fit into the world, would it be worth the risk?

This is one of the most unique and charming books I have ever read, and there is so much to love about it beyond its exquisite cover. It is a magical realism romantic comedy coming of age set in a world still controlled by covid rules that adds to the surrealism even though it is also familiar.

We meet the leading characters and their trials before they meet each other. Elle is a Reader, which means she can see other people's thoughts, and is treated different by everyone outside her family (who have their own issues), even the government. Besides seeing other people's thoughts, though, she is dealing with her own intrusive thoughts and their accompanying compulsions. It was a very realistic and personal portrayal that I could resonate with.

Christopher is not a Reader living in a world that just found out that there are people living among them who can read minds, but he has his own issues like family drama and figuring out his future. Add in cute chemistry between these two, a cast of eccentric friends and families, college drama, and a twist ending, and you have this gorgeous book.

Note for more sensitive readers: this book is NA about college students, so there are higher romance levels than YA, but the two MCs don't break any commandments in that category.

This book is perfect for fans of magical realism, college romances, and anyone who wants to read a rare jewel.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

What an enjoyable read. From Hill's whimsical storytelling, to the mental health representation, to the sweet cinnamon roll boy just trying to help his new friend-girl, I loved this book. Set in the time of coming out of Covid and I really enjoyed the very real feelings that came with adjusting to new parameters.
Family strife, relational conflict and a dash of...super power? Whatever it is the fantasy element is new and interesting. I really enjoyed feeling like it was real life, but with the addition of "Readers".
Some of that conflict felt a bit contrived and I ended up a bit frustrated with a few characters and their decisions, but it did make it feel like real life.
The best part? I have quite a few people in my family who struggle with similar things as Elle does, and for that this book was helpful for me to see how to best help them.
This book ends only slightly open ended, so it could be read as a standalone, but I don't want to! Can't wait for book number two and I already pre-ordered one of these for my shelves.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Emma Hill has ENTRANCED me. I am just in love!!!

"And Maybe We Fall In Love" has me tearing up, pouting happily, goofy smiling, giggling, gushing to my husband...

And highlighting EVERYTHING!!!!

My attempt at a little summary:

Elle Coker is a "Reader," meaning images and thoughts from others' minds float into her own. On top of dealing with other people's thoughts, she has her own intrusive, anxious "Afterthoughts" that make it hard for her to function.

Her path crosses with Christopher, who is trying to find his place in the world, wondering if his art could ever become something meaningful and dealing with insecurities of his own. And while he knows that he can't fix Elle's struggles, perhaps together they can make each other better.

😭😭😭

Emma has beautifully crafted a story with sweet wholesome romance, mental health rep, and finding strength amidst anxiety and mental hardship. And her writing is just so well done.

Though my personal struggles are different than Elle's, I relate to her in so many ways and am finding this story to be so healing.

These characters are both just so insanely lovable it makes me want to scream 😂

I'm happy that I already have a copy of Emma's second book, "It Would Have Been A Great Story"

about a little over a month ago, i won an arc for And Maybe They Fall in Love from the author.
i was so ecstatic because literally a few days before the giveaway, was when the author hit my radar, and i had an anticipated read for 2023...the anticipation did not disappoint!

if you're looking for a new adult, magical realism romance, please do mark your calendars for February 14th, 2023 because this is one you'll want to be ready for

this was just one of those reads where i immediately knew that the story is going to be quite different and very unique ... for instance, the love interests doesn't meet until 42% in but the individual journey up until that point had my full attention. with the family dynamics, sibling relationships, and a bit of mystery to the storyline, you couldn't help but be intrigued

our mc's, Elle & Christopher, were both very loveable characters. i especially found a connection with Elle very early on, and not because of her "gift" but because of her Afterthoughts, and my own battle with OCD. she's a really strong, driven, and caring character that always looks out for those who mean the most to her, even when she has her own inner battles going on.
Christopher is just the sweetest and purest cinnamon roll! My heart completely melted with his care for Elle, and that just ended up confirming that they are the perfect match for each other

the writing was phenomenal, the story was gripping, the magical elements were surprising (in the best of ways!), and the characters were outstanding.
this was just a stunning debut, and i simply cannot wait to read more from Emma Hill's work!

A rom-com with fantasy mixed in? Hill was speaking my love language from the start!

Elle and Christopher’s story was seriously perfect! I loved the pair of them as individuals, and loved them all the more as a couple. They are goofy, imperfect, adorable characters that made me root for them the whole way! 💙

The writing style was light and conversational (my ideal), and the snark was 🤌🏻✨ (which we all know is HIGHLY important for me). I really enjoyed the magical realism included; it was woven in so well with the every day modern world that you hardly noticed it was there. It felt like a fresh take on mind reading, and I liked that it wasn’t some secret, unknown system you had to figure out as the story went.

Honestly, I feel like I could ramble about this for a while, but I’m gonna leave it here saying, I loved it! It was truly a wonderful read and I couldn’t wait to pick it up again every time I had to set it down!

Ahhh this was so good

I really liked how it’s about more than just the romance, and even after the romance part really starts there’s still the other stuff too and it’s not all magically fixed just cuz they’re in lurvvvv
I feel like most romance books have almost no point to them except for the romance, or at least make everything else fade to the background once the main couple gets together, which is kinda annoying but NOT THIS BOOK

Also the world building is cool and the characters are all so fun and distinct from each other

And Grumbly Muffin is so funny idec, especially with all their constant mishaps bahahaha

So, Emma’s depiction of anxiety is so relatable and genuine, but also gentle and considerate. There were moments where I laughed and cringed at Elle’s reactions because I related to them so much. There were other times that I wanted to climb into the pages and give her a hug. Christopher’s story was one that made my mama heart soar.

Emma’s took our world and gave it a fantastical spin. It was so fun stepping into a post-COVID world, but with mind readers. Her worldbuilding was intention and thought out well. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I will recommend it forever. The only reason it didn’t receive five stars from me is merely personal. I have a harder time reading third person when there are multiple POVs. It confuses me at times. (I might be one of those rare people who prefers first-person, and that’s okay).

Read AMTFIL if you like:
Mental health reps
Cinnamon roll MMCs
Strangers to lovers (maybe😉)
Clean romance scenes
Books that feel like a hug after a hard day

p.s. – Emma is a dear friend of mine, but this review is completely and entirely my honest opinion.

I just finished this story. I read it in less then a week which is fast for me. The book lays in my lap right now and I'm overcome with emotion.

Finally a character I can read and completely understand. A voice that's hard for me to articulate to people. Like Elle I struggle with OCD and intrusive thoughts. Reading this made me feel a bit more confident in this area. Everyone who has OCD has different journeys with it. We may share similar thought patterns and habits but we all are in different stages of our journeys. I understand her. She has given me a voice, she has made me feel less alone and when I say me I mean anyone who struggles with OCD. I won't go into to much detail with what she faces because I want you to read her journey for yourself from start to finish and I won't go into my journey in a book review but I am always open to sharing.

Christopher is an amazing Male MC definitely a cinnamon roll! I adore him so much. I liked that there was a bit of fantasy worked into this story with Elle being a reader and the mystery surrounding certain characters. I was invested in this story from start to finish. Emma has a voice and the stories in her heart are told in such a captivating unique and magical way. She was able to handle some difficult topics like body image, anxiety, pregnancy and birth, alcoholism and such with grace and dignity. Thank you for this I will cherish this story and this character.

This book is a college students romance, with a dash of magical realism. I haven't read much of this genre so it was fun getting into this book and finding out all the difference between our world and the &MTFIL world 😍

It's a very sweet closed door romance between 2 students who are from very different backgrounds, but whom are both kinda lost and don't really know what to do with their life. I feel like there's a huge coming of age composant in this book and I'm really here for it. They're both trying to figure out how to adult, and trying to help each other out, but in a healthy way which is always great see!

The book also dives into very deep topics, such as anxiety, which we all kind of feel at varied levels, but it's always nice to feel well represented in the bookish world! I'm always wary at first, about how the author will present the character dealing with anxiety issues and how they will evolve, but Emma did a great job here ❤️

However, I did feel like the ending was too rushed. It seems like some changes were happening overnight and the conclusion to one of the mysteries of the book felt a bit too easy, if that makes sense?

Buuut all in all, I still recommend reading it if you're looking for a closed door new adult romance ❤️

Thank you Emma for an eARC in exchange for an honest review ❤️

I got this book from the author fest at my library, and when I say I was SO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED, i mean it!!! This was one of the cutest, meaningful, and enjoyable romances I’ve read in a long time. I LOVED the mental health rep in there as well. I love that it was a sweet little love story with a deeper meaning, PLUS a surprise magical element too! I loved it so much. I really enjoyed the writing in this book, and the inclusion of mental health difficulties. I found the character's struggles relatable and well explained. However, although I understand this was primarily a romance book, it includes elements of special abilities that I wish were explored more.

There seemed to be not much happening until the last 10% of the book, and I want to know more about how that concluded, so hopefully that will be revealed in a sequel

Such a sweet, sentimental, and creative coming-of-age story about embracing the “maybes” of life! And Maybe They Fall in Love is set in a familiar version of our contemporary world, complete with the pandemic, with one slight magical twist: some people are Readers with the ability to see others’ thoughts. However, the heart of this story explores everyday issues related to family, relationships, and planning for the future.

The mental health rep was so real and raw, inspired by the author’s own struggles with OCD and anxiety (dubbed the Afterthoughts). Definitely the most powerful and insightful aspect of the story.

The college romance was so sweet and realistic, capturing the hope and hesitation that surrounds new relationships, particularly during an already tumultuous period of life.

The internship plot was a little silly, but the ending has some surprises that affect our understanding of the magic in this world. Looking forward to book 2!

I have 18 quotes highlighted, and I want to share them all!

"And what I think, at least, is that you are worth the maybes."

Contemporary Romance is a very much hit or miss for me and this one was charming in every way. I loved the simplicity of the plot and the little touch of fantasy sprinkled in to keep my fantasy-hungry side satisfied. Elle was such a sweet main character! I think what I loved about her most is that she was "real". She deals with OCD and anxiety, and the "afterthoughts" were a very creative way to put that into perspective for someone who doesn't know what it's like to have those thoughts constantly invading one's mental space. But she cares deeply and I related to her need to take care of her sister and try to fix her mom's problems.

"Don't make life decisions at midnight."

Christopher was a bundle of adorable-ness! I loved his heart and how just sweet and compassionate he is. I also appreciated how he processed the dilemma with his parents and his brother as an 18-year-old. My first reaction was that he was being a little selfish, but it was room for him to grow and I know that at his age, there was still a lot that he didn't understand. But the way he chose to love Elle was just so pure and made me smile.

"White like a rainbow was white. White like every color in the universe had converged at once and it was too beautiful for her to see."

And on the topic of Christopher's brother, Martin and Thea need their own book! I ADORED them and their whole side-plot was near and dear to my heart. I would love a book about them because they were such a solid and adorable couple. Plus, Martin made me laugh so much.

"Beautiful wife, beautiful beer, beautiful peanut butter socks. What's not to be happy about?" ~Martin

Overall, I adored this romance and cannot wait for more books from this up-and-coming author!

Content Info: (PG13) Romance consists of a few make-out scenes (no grabby hands) | No cursing | No gore.
Trigger warnings: Infertility | Adoption | Anxiety & OCD | Divorced parents

Such a sweet, tender debut novel that perfectly reflects that tentative-yet-excited-and-a-bit-awkward falling for someone for the first time when you're 18/19 vibe.

I loved the mental health representation (even as someone who's never struggled with Afterthoughts, I really felt for Elle, and Hill wrote her in a way that made it easy to understand how tough it is for her) and the all-too-self-aware slow burn romance between Elle & Christopher.

There was something about this book that just felt like a warm blanket draped around you– cozy. Maybe it was the family themes. The inner-connectivity of all the characters. The gentleness Christopher had with Elle when her Afterthoughts were bothering her. The hesitancy Elle and Christopher both had, and the diligence they had around respecting each other's boundaries. The conflict of the book, which was mostly internal and centered around accepting ourselves without fear. It was just SO SWEET. And it felt real.

The tie-in of the magic/fantasy element of Elle being a Reader was so well done. It felt like it could really be a thing, and it had been entwined in the story in a way that was impactful without feeling completely otherworldly.

And the little twist at the end had me 👀👀👀👀

Overall, a lovely, enjoyable debut novel from Hill! I'm excited to see what's to come next (and to get to know Caroline and Tyler a bit more!), and to see the continuation of this world and these characters. :)

This book was not at all what I was expecting, and in the best way possible! With a title like "And Maybe They Fall In Love", you think the book will be a romance novel, cut and dry. However, this book had such a major mental health background to it with the added layers of social isolation during the pandemic that it just was extremely raw and emotional. Emma Hill bore her heart and soul into this story, and it shows very clearly. As someone who was in Nursing school and has become a nurse during the pandemic, the thoughts of fear, of uncertainty spoke extremely deeply to me while I read this story. Elle and Christopher are both imperfect characters living and trying to do their best in an imperfect, scary world when they meet each other. I think the part where it questions whether both people have to be perfect in order to have a relationship is extremely poignant and should make people think deeply. You don't have to have what people deem an "Instagram perfect" relationship to have real love, respect, and devotion towards another person. You simply have to have the courage and the heart to try. 5.0/5.0 and I cannot wait to see what else Emma Hill writes after this debut novel!

&MTFIL is magical realism meets romance for two college kids, Elle and Christopher, who meet through an internship. It was a sweet read and I love how it explores themes of mental health and infertility (I don’t think I’ve wanted to defend a character so badly before). While romance is not my preferred choice, this was a delight that brought me back college memories of “will they end up together?” For someone who loves magical realism, Elle’s Reading was fascinating to explore, and I’m excited to see where these ideas go next.

If you’re looking for an under 300 page rom-com with a sparkle of magic, And Maybe They Fall in Love is a great option. Consider supporting an indie author, you won’t regret it.

This novel was such a treat. It was absolutely a story I could relate with as the characters navigated post pandemic life. It touched on deeper issues than just love and tropey goodness (though if you like cinnamon rolls this book is definitely for you too) which I always appreciate in a book. Though I had heard rumor so I wasn’t completely taken aback by this, the magical element hit just right.

My favorite part of this story was how, despite having extra abilities, Elle was just so relatable as a character. She’s innately humanized in this story and it really pulls you in as a reader as you root for her every step of the way.

Read if you love:

♥️ Relatable characters

♣️ Deeper topics and themes

♦️ Young adult romance

♠️ Closed door romance

First off let me say that Emma hill knows how to describe emotions! Some of the ways she describes what the characters were feeling was just straight poetry and had me feeling all kinds of mushy. This book also delved into family issues and some personal issues that a lot of the time isn’t talked about, and Emma did an amazing job shedding light on it and explaining how it really is fot some people and how sometimes finding the right person to be on your team can help in some ways. This book is sprinkled with magic, trauma, secrets, love, growth and humor. I absolutely loved it and would recommend it in a heart beat. I can’t wait for the second book and see what happens next!

This was such an interesting and good read! I would’ve read it in one day if schedule allowed.
I loved the fantasy twist but also thought it was a unique way to shine a light on mental health. Especially since the author bravely shared about some of her own mental health journey in the Author’s Note. Plus I loved the opening dedication: “For myself, to prove that I could. And for you, to show that you can.”

I love supporting local authors and can’t wait to read book 2!

I'm going to start this review off by saying that I don't like romance novels. I never have, it's not my genre. I get bored easily, and I like to read books that throw me into an interesting world, with an interesting plot, interesting characters, and interesting dynamics. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I hate all romance in books, (I have my ships, and I will fight you about them) I just never found romance that interesting, so when the romance is the plot and point of the book, I don't really enjoy it as much.

That being said, I absolutely loved this book.

Even though it is in my least favorite genre, Emma Hill has graced us with her gorgeous writing. And her beautiful stories. There were lines in the story that were just really beautiful, haunting, and powerful.

I loved all of the characters, and I felt deeply for each one. Emma is very good at writing characters that you immediately connect with, love, and feel protective over.

The pacing was great, the story flowed well, and the romance didn't feel rushed. And despite And Maybe They Fall In Love being a romance novel, romance didn't feel like the main takeaway. Instead, it felt like a testament to mental health. A testament to self-acceptance and learning to love yourself despite your flaws and issues. Even though you may be struggling, and you feel like you're falling apart, doesn't mean you're not deserving of love. Accepting your flaws as a part of you and accepting that they're not going to go away no matter who comes into your life and helps. You're not perfect, you never will be, and that's ok. And learning that even though you can't be "fixed," doesn't mean that you are broken.

Plus, seeing how the characters saw themselves, vs how they were perceived by each other was amazing. Elle, thinking that she was a mess, barely scraping herself together, and completely falling apart. And then turning around and seeing Christopher not understanding why anyone would think he was better than her, because she's amazing. But it's not JUST because she's amazing, because it's ALSO about how HE feels like HE'S a mess and not worthy of HER! MY HEART-

And yes, even though I don't love romance novels, was I still in full ship mode? You bet. I instantly shipped Elle and Christopher. They're so stinking cute together. I was squealing, kicking my feet, clutching my heart at every little thing, and giggling like an idiot. They made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Christopher is SUCH A LITTLE GENTLEMAN AND GREEN FLAG!!!!

And Maybe They Fall In Love really is a beautiful story, and I absolutely adored it. It's cute, funny, but also real, and emotional. The writing itself was gorgeous, and everyone should read it. Even those who don't like romance novels, because holy shit.

Emma Hill's words are magic. And they have magicked me into liking a romance novel. I can't wait to read It Would Have Been A Great Story!!

PS. I was absolutely LOSING MY MIND anytime TALI was mentioned!

Two stars off for seriously uncomfy content I want to flag, but five stars for the whimsically cathartic chapters I did enjoy!

✨uber creative fantasy element that oddly was one of the MOST relatable things I’ve ever read
✨stellar sibling dynamics (and inspiring micro arcs within that) for each pov
✨following your dreams & finding your pace in the world as someone who sees things verrry differently (for others)

I had a Holy Spirit discernment hunch that we”d only get about a third into this one ;) though take not Ikm not sure how far this was, it just felt like a third. I was on a kindle app hehe.
So! Read this a while ago and wanted to help anyone else from my kind of style and taste and vales/faith get a bit of a perspective.

Make of it what you will, this book handles: anxiety, intrusive thoughts, self harm, ocd, divorce, infertility, worries about neglect of a younger sibling, paranoia, etc. Ok, that’s a hefty amount, but yet this book was just so ….light somehow. (What I read at least), though there were struggles and I felt the messy frustration of our mcs. People you wanna hug or bring food or stand alongside to see their hearts free! (In a contemporary book. Normally I don’t enjoy this genre ;))

Loved the sibling dynamics. Also adoption subplots!

Content (of the make-me-put-it-down-kind):
🚨teen romance, in appropriately. Like, making out, guys. Attraction and feelings….A heavy amount for me.
Going out and back to apartment alone, kissing up to semi detailed. It felt steamy to me, but like mainly cuz I don’t wanna read teenagers getting that crazy on the coach, who hadn’t even been on more than one date. (Wouldn’t have changed my stance if they’d been together for years though to be honest.) Adult who comes in is just like, hey it’s your life, girl, you’re an adult (they are like 18) only word of advice is if you want to play with a boy, pick someone else. This one is a good egg.” Something like that. I am sorry to misquote! I don’t have it anymore. So take that bit with salt. Of course I have no idea how things turn out/progress/are handles or any of the lessons learned. I had to retreat to save my eye gate and blushing and yeahhhh. Not for me 😊
NOTE: things may be worked out, since seen as sin, and redemption experienced about these aspects. I cannot say I had to stop. Hehe.

My advice would be, if yuo chose to pick this up: roceed inch by inch. Stop where you're meant to. I'm not sure how far the content goes. The plot was also getting very repetitive, which was “noticed” by our mcs, but nothing was moving forward but our teen duo. I wasn’t asking for this level of kissing though. 😳🤢 (UPDATE: kissing and intimacy is, of course, not gross. It's sacred. But shown in this way is....disturbing.)

Call me self sheltered! 🙋🏼‍♀️Guilty!

But yeah, just wanted to let y’all know so you don’t go in blind. Love the creativity and the feel and the concept. A shout out to a super fun experiance in that part. Thank you so much, author :D

I really enjoyed this sweet little romance. Hill constructed a believable, sweet story about the struggles of youth and the unexpected love that can bloom between them. Elle and Christopher were likable, compelling characters that could have a seat at my card table any day of the week.

Here is what I liked most and least about the novel:

LIKES:
- Elle's internal afterthoughts were a great window into her irrational mind. I love how she was as frustrated with them as I was. It made her feel that much more real to me in the best way
- I loved how both Elle and Christopher were connected to Rosie in some way. It made the attraction between them feel fated, in a sense. Because she was the one who brought them together
- I loved the Doodle House dynamic btw all 3 occupants. As different as they were, they were very much in the same boat and it showed.
- Elle and Christopher ❤️ Could I just say how adorable they were? Their relationship felt so genuine and real. It wasn't rushed or it didn't just fall in their laps with no thought put into it. There was A LOT of thought. A lot of care and caution, which they both demonstrated in the best way.

DISLIKES:
- Rosie, but not all of her. There were a lot of things I liked about her. The dislikes weren't enough for me to to DNF the book, so I take these as minor, perhaps personal annoyances, that most readers would not be put off by at all. I didn't like how she was protective of Chris, it didn't make much sense to me as to why she was. And why she wasn't the same for Elle. I also didn't think it was realistic that she only spent one day in the hospital after giving birth. Normal stays are 3 to run all the necessary checks and tests before discharging a mother and child. That kind of took me out of the story a little. And I am still unsure how to feel about her part in the ending.

My rating: 4.5/5 stars
NA | romance | OCD representation

This is a special book. In this slow-paced, character-focused story that stars two young college students just trying to navigate their world, Hill tackles some heavy struggles in a simple, easy-to-understand way.

I loved the characters, their real struggles and fears, the most tender love story that got me in my feels... great job, Emma.

Read it for:
✨ OCD representation
✨ A touch of magic realism
✨ Navigating difficult family relationships
✨ Imperfect people in imperfect relationships
✨ When your safe place is a person
✨ The sweetest love story... maybe

Elle is a young college student with the ability to Read minds. She also struggles with Afterthoughts (a creative way to portray the intrusive thoughts and compulsions that are part of OCD) Then she meets Christopher, who just got out of high school and is scared to pursue his dream of making art for a living. They both have secrets they're trying to hide and fears that are holding them back, but maybe, just maybe, they could fall in love.

I think this story will be so validating and comforting for those who share the same struggles as these characters, and eye-opening for those who don't.

I don't struggle with Afterthoughts like Elle, but I related to both her and Christopher's worries that there are so many things that could go wrong, so why even try? They taught me that life is full of uncertainty, but letting our fear of failure hold us back is even worse.

I'm taking this as my new motto: "You are worth the maybes." 💜

And Maybe They Fall In Love was 4.5/5 for me. It began slower and so I had a harder time sinking into it, but once the love interests finally meet, the story really picks up its pace. Elle has a lot on her plate with her parent's recent separation, her concern that her little sister’s needs are not being met by home, and not knowing what she wants out of life. On top of it all, she suffers from debilitating “after thoughts” which give her compulsions to wash her hands until they’re bleeding and raw, worrying about how clean and safe things are, and often doesn’t eat because of the unknowns surrounding everything. She feels that no one would understand, including her therapist who sweeps her concerns under the rug. Yet, when Elle meets Christopher, he’s different. He doesn’t see her as broken, he only wants to help. It is easier said than done of course, but his determination is refreshing. Elle and Christopher meet through an internship where he is an upcoming artist and she has been brought on to make sure the other interns aren’t overwhelmed. Why? Elle is a “Reader,” a mind-reader. Not only is she weighed down by the burdens of her own life, she also knows what is going on with everyone else in her vicinity. You can understand how awkward that might be for a budding romance. I enjoyed the book and even though I’ve never experienced Elle’s Afterthoughts to the same degree as she does, I found her relatable.

After hearing the basic synopsis of this book in an Instagram reel, my interest was piqued, but because I’m a skeptic, I decided to try the Kindle sample before committing to buying it.

I was barely through the third paragraph before I purchased the book.

The writing voice was just so strong immediately. It was smart and knowing, and I knew this would be a book focused on people and relationships, and that the perspective would be good and important. And it really, really was. I loved it. I basically read it in one sitting, only stopping to sleep.

There were a few plot things I didn’t completely love, and I think a few things deserved more attention and others a little less, but, really, these are nitpicky opinions that don’t take away from how much I enjoyed it. I loved how much it explored the difficulties of being able to read minds, the OCD/anxiety aspect was well done, and each POV had a distinct feel to it. There was a lot of subtly to the humor (still not over "he smiled like someone who would help with physics homework, if anyone needed it"), and there were a lot of wholesome moments too.

So, basically, you should give And Maybe They Fall In Love a chance. I think it’s well worth it.

Though I ended up enjoying most of this, I struggled to get into it at first I think its because I couldn't quite figure out if it was going to be a rom-com, something more fantastical or mainly a contemporary coming of age story, and the pacing in the first half of the book was a bit slow at times. However, I did really enjoy the banter, the humour, some of the characters and a big part of the romance, and I enjoyed the themes surrounding mental health. That was nicely done, and its a very heartwarming story. If it wasn't for the spice level being just over what I feel comfortable with reading, I would've opted to pick up the next book.

Content warnings (minor spoilers)
Coarse language: none, if i remember correctly
Violence & gore: none
Sexual content: this one was a bit more on the spicy side, which is why i won't be picking up the next book by this author; handsy teenagers making-out and considering 'spending the night' is not my thing

I loved this book! Chapter 1 had me hooked, and by chapter 2 I had already cried for the sweet and struggling FMC.

I thought it was well written and had a lot of lines that captured my attention - and characters that captured my heart.

Plot wise, I felt like all the internship stuff was on the fringes of the story. It was mostly character conflict/plot, which is totally okay but makes me wonder what was going on with the internship behind the scenes. It brought the characters together so I would love to know its purpose. But that’s just me being immersive and wondering :)

I am really interested to hear the stories about the other characters in the author’s upcoming second book of the “maybe” duology!
