My Soul to Keep

Rate this book

Sharie Kohler dazzles with the dark, sensual world of the Moon Chasers, where two half-breed lycans are locked in deadly combat over the fate of the world—and their own hearts.

Sorcha is no longer the pitiful teenage orphan who roamed the streets of Paris after her pack was destroyed, but despite all she now has—wealth, beauty, strength—she is still haunted by memories of Jonah, her fellow half-breed who broke her innocent young heart years before, and who now believes her dead. Determined to drive Jonah from her dreams forever, Sorcha vows to kill the witch whose curse first condemned the lycans to soulless immortality . . . doomed to be ruled by their dark passions, yet never truly able to love or be loved.

Still devastated over the girl he failed, Jonah has found purpose as a demon slayer. When a stranger starts stalking the world’s most powerful demon witch, he is assigned to kill the huntress before her meddling releases an evil that threatens all mankind.

Face-to-face again at last, can Sorcha and Jonah put their anger and hurt behind them to defeat the darkness . . . and dare they hope to find a love neither dreamed possible?

This is one of those books where I feel like I was lied to. Paranormal romance was pushed heavily for this book, but it was 99% paranormal and 1% romance.

I also just didn't vibe with the writing style of this book. I wasn't connected with the characters at all and I couldn't keep myself glued to it the way I normally am with paranormal romance books. It wasn't engaging for me, which was disappointing.

I know other people will love this book, but I just... didn't.

One out of five stars.

☹️ This isn't my idea of an entertaining read. I found the heroine often annoying, and there’s surprisingly little romance. The pacing feels slow, and there are lengthy, dull info-dumps about demons, witches, lycans, and half-lycans that disrupt the flow.

The story begins with a powerful moment: the MCs are separated after a bomb explosion, each believing the other is dead. They move on with their lives but carry the weight of that loss.

Thirteen years later, Sorcha is grieving her husband’s death. They never had a romantic relationship because he was old and like a father to her, yet she feels an all-consuming need to avenge him. 🤷‍♀️

To find the creature responsible for his death, Sorcha hires a white witch. However, a demon possesses the witch and reveals that Tresa, the witch who started the lycan curse, is the one who killed her husband. Not even considering the demon’s evil hidden agenda, Sorcha starts training to find and eliminate Tresa.

Jonah is now a demon slayer chosen by God to fight demons and protect white witches. He learns from his witch friend Darby, that Sorcha plans to kill Tresa. He must stop her, or the unleashed demon will destroy the world.

Finally, Sorcha and Jonah meet after 13 long years of missing each other. Instead of a tender scene of reconciliation, there is blame and cruel words before Sorcha runs off.

I wanted a touching reunion scene! 😡

Tresa tells Sorcha why she can't unleash the demon.
Jonah tells Sorcha why she can't unleash the demon.
Sorcha won't listen; she HAS to avenge her husband.

Who cares what happens to the world!

By the halfway point, I felt frustrated. The MCs were still at odds, and despite pages of their internal thoughts about how much they cared for each other, their actions told a different story. I wasn't looking for an enemies-to-lovers plot. 😤

Sorcha's plans are stopped when her evil father makes a reappearance. He forces the MCs to participate in blood matches in an arena against other supernatural beings, and hunters.

In the epilogue, some loving words are said, but there are no actual 'I-love-you's. They plan to . Sorcha pauses her scheme to kill Tresa, for now...

Darius, a side character, is hunting Tresa to find the witch behind it all. He aims to end the lycan curse and regain his humanity, believing he's destined to be alone. (I DNF'd his and Tresa's book.)

This Jonah and Sorcha's story who we met in the last book. Jonah thinks Sorcha died in the fire and vice-versa. Jonah has become a demon slayer and is close to a witch coven, when one of the witches he treats as a sister warns him that the witch that cursed the lycans is about to be killed, this would be a bad thing because it would free the demon who controls her, and he is really bad so it's like choosing which poison is worse. Now, the one hunting the witch is Sorcha(because the witch killed her elderly, savior father like husband). They both meet again after so many years when Jonah comes to stop her. It is a shock to both of them and things progress. As usual Darius shows up(he's the ancient weary lycan). Sorcha decided she wants to train to kill demons and Jonah humors her for a while and they become lovers. He pushes her away eventually and she is caught by some elements, the hero saves the day. Nice solid story. Enjoyable.

Sorcha has a good damn reason to want this particular witch dead and nothing on earth or hell below will stop her. She’s used all her resources and funds given to her by her murdered husband and finally, she has a lead. Never would she imagine that a ghost from her past would emerge to stop her.

Jonah, a demon hunter, is usually the first one to let a demon out to end its miserable existence on this plane, yet this demon may be a greater threat to the world than anyone imagines. So, he’s contacted by a white witch and informed that the world will be in grave danger if this demon gets out, Jonah is sent to prevent that. He is stunned by whom he is supposed to kill to stop that.

Once upon a time, they were intended to be mated despite Sorcha’s young age yet despite Sorcha’s love for him, Jonah didn’t feel the same way. And the night of the fire, both were convinced of the others death. Finding out that that was not the case and worse yet, they now find themselves on opposing sides of a war.

This book was uncomfortable. Not only knowing their past where Sorcha’s asshole father wants her to have sex with a much older man, a man Sorcha imagined herself in love with, but not feeling any real love connection between the two characters now. This book was very oddly paced. I got halfway through it and the original setting/ conflict with the witch hadn’t even changed. The whole book took place over a day or so. And the ending wasn’t even about the freaking witch! The major plotline or so I thought, was soon forgotten in favour of a fight club situation? I lost interest very very quickly as soon as the badass heroine (or so I thought) turned into a whinny weak creature. Such a disappointment.

Warning: this review comes with some spoilers.

For me, the story lacks in some parts. First, in the protagonist's (Sorcha) development. Except for having her transition, she did not gain any other strengths. The author should have also highlighted her transition not just letting Sorcha narrate what happen in a few sentences. Second, in the call of Sorcha's journey to avenge her late husband. In this part it lacks depth to emphatize with the protagonist and it also lacks resolve as Sorcha gets tangled in other things. The protagonists will to defend her dead husband was weak and lacks the foundation. Third, the reason for the protagonist's journey was brushed away immediately, one time its important, then suddenly its not in the protagonist's mind anymore. Fourth, the romance part was good, the denial and chase was good but still lacks impact for me, I just hoped that there was more romantic exchange of dialogues to better see their affection and longing for each other. Fifth, the story was a little sidetracked for me, like it lost the sense of the journey. Lastly, the resolution did not solve many questions that was build up throughout the story. Like why did Teresa killed Sorcha's husband, why did the demon stated that Sorcha has the power to eliminate it? Was ut just to provoke her and let him out or does she truly possess the gift and why did the demin of teresa chose her? Things like that.

However, The ending was good for me. Finally ending their denials for each other, and finally being together.

My Soul to Keep is the book you want to buy for keeps! Kohler’s series focusing on half breed lycans will make you howl with delight! This fourth installment in her Moon Chaser series is not to be missed!

Sorcha has always dreamed of a better world. Her malicious father dictated her life and determined her future whether she liked it or not. When all she really wanted was her father’s right hand man Jonah. Always Jonah. To Sorcha, he was everything. Her love, her guardian and her protector until one night an explosion killed her family taking Jonah and any hope for happiness with it...or so she thought.

Fast forward twelve years later. Sorcha is now a widow, bent on vengeance to avenge her late husband. A husband she married for companionship more than passion or love, someone who understood and accepted the uncontrollable animal inside her. Someone who could fill the void and the pain of losing Jonah. Sorcha misses her husband terribly and feels responsible for his death. She locates the witch responsible and before she can initiate the killing blow someone stops her. But this isn’t just anyone, it’s Jonah.

Both are shocked to see each other alive since both thought the other had perished in the explosion. Jonah isn’t the same dovenatu, or half breed werewolf, Sorcha remembers and she certainly isn’t the same young girl who needed Jonah’s protection. Jonah knows if he allows Sorcha to kill the witch millions of people will perish when her demon is released. Jonah can’t let Sorcha kill the witch and Sorcha won’t give up until this witch is good and dead. Both are determined to get their way and have plenty of unresolved emotions from their past coming to the surface. This battle is putting their hearts on the line and these werewolves play for keeps.

After you read the first half, you’ll love it. After the second half you’ll love it even more. Kohler does not disappoint, continuing her amazing Moon Chaser series with Sorcha and Jonah’s story. They have super-human strength because they are dovenatus; half lycan, half human, able to shift at will. So the base animal characteristics make for some interesting characters. Yet Kohler works in that daunting task of putting their human side right in the readers face. Sometimes you forget they are paranormal characters, because you’re lost in a world of two misunderstood people, attempting to be normal. Of course, as with all paranormal adventures, they are anything but normal.

My Soul To Keep is a story that has a deep history and unresolved emotions at it’s core. Twelve years earlier, they shared a sweet and gentle relationship. Now, it’s an intense and passionate connection that scares them both. They have been haunted by their past and aren’t quiet certain how to let it go and focus on a future together. Sorcha is not the same young girl Jonah felt he had to protect. She is an independent and courageous woman set on vengeance. It has changed and disguised her from the innocent girl he used to know. Now, she is stubborn and strong, refusing to lose her focus and direction.

Jonah has become a loner since the day he thought Sorcha dead. He moves through life as a demon slayer now, protecting his witch friend Darby and her coven. Watching him discover the woman Sorcha has become is a true delight. This is not the same girl he remembers and his confusion with his feelings toward her is heartwarming and sweet. He is at a loss, since he has always been her protector. He now realizes she may not need such diligent protection. When he finally accepts this fact, he can’t help but become amazed and attracted to the woman she’s become. Jonah is a supernatural hero worth every bit of praise and admiration. You will love him simply because it’s impossible not to.

The story moves so quickly, you won’t have time to put this book down. The beginning is entertaining and passionate, but the last half is suspenseful and thrilling. I simply couldn’t read it fast enough. If you loved any of the previous novels in the Moon Chaser series, you will certainly love My Soul To Keep. This book is an example of how Kohler’s series is simply getting better with age!

WEAKEST BOOK IN THE SERIES.
You know that scene in the movie Moonlight where Cher's character slaps Nic Cage's character when he says he loves her and she yells "Snap out of it!" Well that's this book. The main character Sorcha was so silly, so infantile, so -- useless, I kept wanting to slap her silly and yell those same words to her. Jonah and Sorcha (sheesh even her name annoys me) were introduced in an earlier book and their characters held promise. I had hoped that theirs would be a great story behind their uniting that culminated in a pair that I would look back on and say yeah those two made a great book. However now that the rubber met the road I was praying that Jonah ended up with someone a bit more spunky like say Mila the white witch at the end of the book.

Sorcha has a rather illogical thirst to get revenge on the HWIC (head witch in charge) who created the subspecies. Because of her Sorcha believes her husband was killed as just another bump in the road. Not to mention he was elderly, more of a father figure and never her husband in all ways. He just basically took her in and according to her exposed her to culture and wealth and art. Sorcha was so glad to be away from cruelest dad of the Year Ivo that a Pigeon could have taken her into it's nest and she would have been grateful. Sorcha also carried a torch for Jonah and both Jonah and she believed each other dead in an horrific explosion so of course when they come face to face, no happy reunion for these two. Just blame and recriminations. Him - I thought you were dead. Her - I thought you were dead and you failed to mate with my 15 year old self when I offered. The storyline then jumps to Sorcha (that awful name again) wanting to train to kill demons because she can't keep hold of the witch when she finds her and she can't seem to protect herself when a demon tries to kill her via another source. That thread wraps up in a few chapters with her seeming to have learned nothing and Jonah getting his rocks off repeatedly and then booting her butt into the street. The book wraps up with Daddy Ivo putting them (yes his own daughter too) in a gladiator style fight club. The book quickly introduces other characters (I'm liking Mila), other species and another awful explosion where - duh-duh-duh (cue the music) we don't know if daddy Ivo is dead and done.

I could not wait for this book to end. I liked the start of the series and felt the first few books showed promise but ewwww this one stunk to high heaven. Weakly written, no strong plot development, kinda pointless sex (and I likes me some steamy paranormal loving) and so many threads left untied I am aghast at what Ms. Kohler will delve into next. It was also a too quick read. I think given what she threw out there this book seems to have been more a setting of the table for other stuff to come in the series but she did so in a way that left me with no interest in finding out what that is. Also don't let these 4 & 5 stars fool you on this one. This book at best was 3 stars (and I mean 2.5-3) for being the weakest in the series and a full-on messy mish-mash. I understand the to each his own but I personally am tired of many professional reviewers (you know who you are) giving the buying public these glowing reviews for lack-luster stuff. I also hope Ms. Kohler gets back in the game with a better offering next time worthy of the books in the series

My Soul to Keep (Moon Chasers, Book 4) by Sharie Kohler
Paranormal Romance - Aug. 31, 2010
4 ½ stars

This is a fantastic series. My Soul to Keep is officially the 4th full length novel in her Moon Chasers werewolf series. (There is a short novella in the anthology Haunted by Your Touch coming out in Oct 2010.) What sets this series apart is that the werewolves are not noble creatures of the earth but savage, mindless, and violent. So instead of being celebrated, they are hunted down. All except for the rare dovenatu who are half-breeds. They are lucky because they have the ability to control their animalistic urges. In this story we are treated to a tale of 2 dovenatu with an emotional past history.

Sorcha is a dovenatu who was terrorized by her family. The only one she admired was Jonah who protected her. She idolized him but he rejected her young attentions. When a deadly fire kills all of her pack Sorcha is finally able to find a life when she is found by a elderly and wealthy man. He is fascinated by her abilities. He marries her and shows her how to love and accept herself. However, her joy is short lived when he is brutally murdered by a witch named Tresa who possessed by a demon. The same witch who cursed all her kind into becoming werewolves. Determined to have her vengeance Sorcha tracks down Tresa but is stopped by none other than Jonah!

Jonah is a demon slayer who protects witches from being possessed from demons. When one of the witches warns him that a woman is trying to kill Tresa he realizes he must prevent her. Because if the Tresa dies the powerful demon who possesses her will be set loose and create untold damage. But when he travels to stop the witch slayer he surprised, appalled, and aroused by a tough and sexy Sorcha.

I thought both of these characters had a lot of chemistry. Both needed and did complement each other. I liked Sorcha’s new tough attitude and Jonah is very heroic and noble. Their past history added a lot to the story’s depth. But I did get tired of Sorcha’s single minded drive to kill Tresa even after she has been told repeatedly why it is NOT a good idea to let the demon free. Thankfully she redeems herself later in the book with her courage. I also admired Jonah but there is one change in his attitude when he drives Sorcha away that I felt really didn’t fit his character. While I think both actions did add tension to the story I wish the author hadn’t added them in since it made both of the characters behavior inconsistent even somewhat irrational. If it were not for those 2 issues I would rate this book as perfect! It certainly packs a lot of surprises and introduces some very interesting new characters. Especially, the werewolf hunter who is hated by his own.

A quick and highly entertaining paranormal romance. Sorcha is totally bad ass and Jonah is a hard-hitting knight in shinning armor. This is a book that readers looking for a new take on the werewolves mythology will enjoy!

My Soul to Keep is the 4th book in the Moon Chasers series. It was a slight disappointment for me, as I really enjoyed the previous books and was so happy to see another edition was being released this year. I was interested to read about Jonah and Sorcha who were seen throughout the previous books.

Sorcha is the daughter of the twisted Ivo and meak Danae. Ivo has long since gone a bit crazy, trying to take over the world in one way or another. The prologue takes us back to Sorcha's 13th birthday. Ivo is trying to scare her into her transition to a dovenatu, a hybrid lycan who "possesses control, free will" and the ability to determine when they will and won't shift. They are not bound to the moon, like "regular" lycans. Her father is irritated that she hasn't transitioned and tells her if she doesn't soon she'll be worthless to him. As always, Jonah, Ivo's second-in-command comes to her rescue. Ivo has decided that Jonah is to mate with Sorcha, no matter that she's only a child. They love each other, in their own way. Sorcha hopes they will eventually be together while Jonah only sees her as a child.

Flash forward twelve years, Sorcha believes Jonah died in the fire that took her father and Jonah believes the same of Sorcha. Jonah has "been chosen" to be a demon hunter. Sorcha has lost her human husband to a demon witch. Their paths quickly intersect as she heads off to kill the one that took the life of her husband and Jonah stops her. If the life of the witch held by a demon is taken, the demon will be free to take corporeal form and reek all sorts of havoc.

So, although I was finally rewarded with a HEA between Sorcha and Jonah, there was a lot of duplication through the story. So much so, that I wonder if the book could've been much shorter. I did enjoy the twist on demons, witches and lycans. I would like to say that I'll continue reading, if another book is released in the series, but if I do it won't be a pre-order.

Sorcha is half-human and half-lycan, a dovenatus. So is Jonas, her father's second in command. Sorcha's father is the Alpha of their pack and his word is absolute. Sorcha was promised to Jonas as his future mate, and she adores him. Jonas, though he cares for Sorcha, knows she is too young yet for a relationship.

When Sorcha is fifteen, Jonas turns from her. He doesn't feel she is ready yet for a relationship and her heart is broken. When a fire breaks out, she uses the distraction to run, even as she realizes all of her pack and Jonas are still in the clutches of the fiery inferno. She spends years heart-broken and thinking of Jonas, but eventually marries.

When Sorcha's husband is murdered, she vows to seek vengeance. She trains hard, and hires a witch to help her see who murdered her husband and where they are located. She learns it is a witch possessed by a demon, the same demon who curses her kind centuries ago.

When Sorcha goes after the witch, she is stopped from striking the killing blow by Jonas. She is shocked to see him alive, as she thought him dead. All of her old feelings come rushing back to her, but she tamps them down. How dare he get in her way of her revenge?

Jonas has to stop Sorcha from killing the witch and releasing the demon at all costs, even if he has to kill her. The demon is almost impossible to kill if released and will wreak havoc upon mankind. He thought Sorcha was dead so he is stunned to see her all grown up. He vows to win her heart again, even if they fight every step of the way.

MY SOUL TO KEEP, BOOK 4 of the MOON CHASER SERIES, is a thrilling paranormal romance. This series is phenomenal, full of romance, mystery, action and the paranormal. The characters are complex and riveting and their world they inhabit captivating and interesting. Full of sensual passion, jaw-dropping action, and exceptional writing, MY SOUL TO KEEP is a sure-fire winner. It can be read as a stand-alone novel, but you won't want to miss the rest of the series, MARKED BY MOONLIGHT, KISS OF A DARK MOON, and TO CRAVE A BLOOD MOON.

As a child, Sorcha adored Jonah, her father's second in command, and when he rejected her advances, she ran away from the cruel life her parents forced on her. That act of rebellion saved her life, but she'd watched the fire that destroyed the palace and killed her family and Jonah. That was before her transition--the coming of age for a hybrid lycan/human called a dovenatu--before she became strong and beautiful.

Twelve years later, after her elderly husband is torn apart by a demon, Sorcha sets out for the arctic to avenge his murder.

Jonah has never forgiven himself for not saving Sorcha from the inferno. She had been the only goodness and innocence in his life and he had failed to keep his vow to protect her. His current lonely existence as a demon slayer hardly makes up for years of working for Sorcha's depraved father. Knowing he's destined to die, he accepts a mission to the frozen north hoping to save the world from unimaginable horrors.

When Sorcha and Jonah come face to face in a wilderness cabin in Alaska, sparks start flying instantly. But Sorcha is not longer the innocent child who longed for his love and Jonah is shamed by the sexual need she ignites in him. Unfortunately, any chance of reconciliation is impossible given his mission is to stop her from getting her revenge and she's destined to kill him.

As these two battle demons, witches and ultimately an evil determined to destroy them both, Sorcha and Jonah can't deny their dovenatu animal natures or the emotions that refuse to stay buried in the past.

Over the four book Moon Chasers Series, Sharie Kohler has developed a rich world inhabited by lycans, dovenatus, witches and demons. Each book builds on the last, however, they also stand alone as a satisfying complete story. Fast paced, original, with plot twists the reader never sees coming, MY SOUL TO KEEP once again proves that Ms. Kohler is one of the masters of the paranormal romance genre!

This is a fun werewolf/shifter series! My Soul to Keep is the fourth installment within the Moon Chasers series.

As a child, Sorcha was terrorized by her family. Her father was a strong, slightly crazy, alpha who seemed bent of conquering the werewolf world. Her family viewed her as weak, but Jonah, her father’s right hand man, protected her. Growing up, Sorcha had a crush on Jonah, but he didn’t return her feelings – he always viewed her as a child.

Years later, Sorcha and Jonah meet again. Both had believed the other was dead, but their reunion is anything but happy and peaceful. Sorcha is on a mission to kill a demon possessed witch and Jonah (who is a demon hunter) has been charged with keeping the possessed witch alive. If the sorceress dies, her demon will be released and hell will literally break loose.

The overall storyline of the book was fantastic. The relationship and sexual tension between the main characters was well written. The draw backs: Sorcha was a bit too headstrong and she became very irritating at times. The book, though short, seemed to drag in some areas. Jonah saved the story. He was a wonderful hero.

This series is a fresh take on shifters/werewolves. The paranormal and fantasy elements blend very well. If you are a fan on the shifters, werewolves and witches you must check out the Moon Chasers series.

3.75 stars. I struggled just a smidge through the first half of this book. I'm not sure if it was because it ceased being mostly about lycans and more about witches and demons, even though the two main characters were hybrids. Of course, I know this was a set up for the last two books in the series, but I originally started this series because it was about werewolves specifically. After the halfway point though it picked up and I enjoyed it much more. I'm always torn on how I feel about second chances at love due to one half of the couple being the much younger sisterly type (it's always a younger sisterly type lol). This particular trope was done well in this book though. I love how the author alluded to the loneliness of Tresa and the feeling of desolation as someone as ancient as her having yet to meet that one other being specifically for them knowing how her story ends. Overall the book was good, but not as good as the first three books. I would still recommend it though.

I have to say it was interesting to see who the main couple was in this book. I wondered from the last book if they would show up.

I find it interesting that Jonah always had a thing for Sorcha, but was repulsed by what her father wanted her to do. It makes me think so much better of him for it.

I felt sorry for Sorcha, when she ran she certainly escaped death, but it left her so alone in the world. It was nice to see she was able to find someone to provide a home and safety she never had.

I liked the addition of the witches and where that storyline went, but Darius showing up seemed very random. I really liked Darby and would love to see her show up again.

When things moved to Paris, I just knew who would turn up. I also thought that portion was very odd and didn't really make sense, other than to get everyone back together again.

Pretty good continuation in the series. I’ve missed a story here and there so I find I have a harder time connecting to the world built and some of the secondary characters that may have been introduced in earlier stories. Other than that, I really liked the conflict built between the hero and heroine. They both had extremely different agendas and there was really no way to bridge the gap for them but they had a connection that couldn’t be denied. I did wish to see more of the love story, I felt there were a few jumps where the story could have been developed a little more. Other than that, great story.

All right, so far so...eh...ok I guess. There was nothing much to on really. Jonah was all right and basically the only thing I liked. Sorcha wasn't really all that and a bag of chips. Plus, the ending sucked ass (not in a good way).

I am also wondering when Darius is going to come in. So far, I am just dying to read his book. He needs to have his happy story with some exciting adventure to get his mate. I just wanna read Darius!!!

Book 4 in the Moonchaser series. Now, granted I I haven't read any if the previous books in this but I have read one or two of the short stories I think. This is not a series where you have to start at the beginning - I was not lost at all. This was a good but not great book. I never really felt involved although there were some surprises here and there. Overall it's your standard Paranormal Romance, tortured souls and all.

This one was not as good as the previous three. Jonas was such an interesting character in the previous book, but in this one his character was flat. I will stick with this series but I hope the next one will be better.
