A New family in Cutters Gap, they buy a small cabin adjoining the Doctors property (buy it from the Doc) they are a black family and the mountain folk don't take too well to the idea. The Washingtons were influenced by a tale their grandfather told of escaping as a slave and being helped by a person called Birdy who tended the grandfather and cut of leg chains that were binding him.
spoiler alert for the following paragraph. After an altercation whereby Bob Allen shot their teenage son, but later required help due to a medical episode the prejudice shown seemed to be evaporating. Then their cabin is set on fire during the night.... just as they are about to leave the Gap; Bob offers the father a job at his mill helping him and offers to help rebuild the cabin... a family secret is exposed, Bob's grandmother was Birdy who helped the Washingtons grandfather.
This episode is about racism in the cove. Dr MacNeill sells a piece of his property to a new black family, and both the children and the adults of the cove unite against them, even to the point of physical violence. Only those involved at the mission reach out to befriend them. The family nearly leaves the cove, but eventually one of the little girls of the cove befriends one of the new little girls, and in a crisis, the black family returns good for evil.
