The Romance Review

Hiding one's identity is needed when one's sexual escapades are frowned upon by the stuffy business establishment. Miranda Cahill is working on her doctorate in English literature. Her chosen PhD subject is out of the ordinary. She postulates the erotic in Victorian times are firsthand accounts, not porn. Other scholars look down upon her because this is not "real literature".

I found this book to be very well written. Ms. Sarari does a fabulous job of showing the conflicts between personal and professional life. In addition, she brings to light a possible explanation of Victorian erotica which is thought provoking. Using her two characters, Miranda and Mark, Ms. Sarari explores the secretive underground sex culture. The writing technique is what charms me in this story. Miranda finds an old book which is a diary of sexual escapades from a "lady" of the manor. The increasing sexual exploration in the diary mirrors Miranda's adventures behind her mask. The parallels are well done and both end quite satisfactory. Without giving spoilers, let's say that Miranda and her diary's writer both find themselves seduced in similar manners by a masked man.

The sex in this story is smoking hawt. Every scene is arousing and elicits a moan of pleasure from the reader. Ms. Sarari certainly kinks up the sex. It is not BDSM, but it sure as hell is not vanilla. She plays with several fantasies, including incest. There isn't really incest, just a couple degrees of separation which only makes the sex even steamier. Ms. Sarari is known for her powerful erotica filled with delicious seductive imagery. This erotica is a well written and provocative. Highly recommended to erotica readers who enjoy a good plot and character building.

By day Miranda is a demure, conservative doctorate student working on her Victorian Erotica thesis. By night, she is a sex kitten who is eager to explore her voracious sexual appetite.

Sounds pretty amazing right? Yeah, captured my attention right out the gate. Too bad I didn’t realize it was going to be nothing but sex without real substance in this book. I love smut as much as the next Erotica reader, because let’s face it, it’s the sex that intrigues us into reading it in the first place. But too much of a good thing can be bad.

I have read some really great erotic romance novels and some really bad ones. This one falls somewhere in between. It had some really great highlights like how she learned to be content with who she is and realize that her appetite although insatiable in the right context is quite special. The scenes between the couples were great and some done in great detail; even down to the point of smell. I think Miranda is very brave and I do applaud her taking hold of her desires and running with it; even if it was extreme because today in our society some things are still taboo.

What really turned me off with this book was the uncaring disregard for her safety, which after half way through the book she realized how unsafe some of the situations she put herself in was. Then it was every sex scene took about four to five pages (if not longer) then it’s a page and half of reprieve then sex again. I ended up skimming them because it was pretty much the same things over and over again; especially after she read from the diary or hearing about someone else’s sex life she gets horny and would need release. Side note: I believe her being “betrayed and abandoned” by her first lover is slightly exaggerated as it was one night and really has nothing to do with her insatiable lust.

In the end it was hard for me to connect with this book because of the seemingly never-ending sex, which can be great in some context but not for over 200 pages. Also, reader beware: READ THE DISCLAIMER before diving into this book.

I was gifted a copy of this book from the JeepDiva in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and ratings are my own and I was in no way compensated.

goodness, i finished this ages ago & forgot to mark it as read. i enjoyed this very much. the combo of literary references & homage to Victorian erotica was quite lovely. loved the pure range of sexual encounters. such a delightful romp. i would have given it 5/5 if we had stayed away from the romance & just had the characters experience pure lust. "more raunch, less romance" is my mantra.

Lisabet Sarai writes some of the hottest, smartest erotica around and this book is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed both the sex and characterization in this well-written novel.

It definitely kept me interested but it was a little too raunchy for me at times.

If you enjoy Sarai's trademark steamy sex scenes, with BDSM and multiple partners tossed in for good measure, you'll love this book! I rated it highly because she also has a very good story to tell here. So it's not just erotica, because there is a definite plot line, and a HEA at the end of both stories.

Both, you may ask? Yes, this is the story of a contemporary woman who is doing her post-grad research on Victorian erotica, with her thesis that much of it was actually diaries, rather than male-written fiction, because of the details that only a female would think to include in something so obviously erotic. A male fiction author would never have included details about the woman's children, or her place in society. In doing her research, she discovers what she thinks is a blank diary, but turns out to have been written in disappearing ink, when her cat spills her wine on the book and words appear.

So we get the sexual exploits that she, herself, is experiencing, as well as the sexual exploits of the long-ago woman who wanted to record her deeds, but not have them discovered. And for both women, there is a HEA. My only warning is to read this when you're alone, so no one notices you squirming in your seat at the erotic nature of the exploits of both women! Then enjoy.

Miranda finds herself bored by relationships and sex. She feels unfulfilled, so she uses the diary of a woman from the Victorian era who wrote of her exploits. Miranda awakens her hidden desires and seeks new adventures. It is during these encounters she secretly meets a man who turns out to also enjoy a secret life. He is a colleague and they find their HEA. The story is super steamy. My only criticism is I wish the narrator was able to alter the voices in keeping with the accents and genders of the characters.

Well written tale of erotic encounters. Not much plot but plenty of very spicy action.
Narration wasn't the best as male voices were almost a monotone and lacked any passion or emotion.

Miranda was 'burned' by her first lover and has had a problem ever since. If she is attracted to someone, then she freezes up and can't speak or interact without being wooden. She is researching Victorian stories from an unusual angle and manages to draw their influence into her own life, sometimes with crazy risks. Mark is interested in Miranda but is prepared to give her space to sort out her issues. Will he be as understanding when her activities come to light?

This is a very enjoyable and well-written book, with lots of references made to Victorian literature, which were both tantalising and informative. A hot and erotic story of someone exploring their sexuality. Full of incredible detail and history, this is much more than 'just' erotica. Definitely recommended.
