Halpert-McGonaugh Pack #1

Seeing Red: A Halpert-McGonaugh Pack Novel

Rate this book
One night, one chance, a pack masquerade party. It was the perfect opportunity, and Charlotte was going to take it. She had a plan, a harebrained, half-baked scheme, but she was willing to give it a shot if there as a chance she might get her happily ever after.
Some things are worth the risk. Charlotte knew she was taking a big one.

Will the wolf she's had her eye on for some time now accept her offer? Or will this shiftless shifter be left howling at the moon?

This is a Halpert-McGonaugh pack novel.

Warning: this book contains a spunky, curvy leading lady, one possessive alpha male, strong language, a whole lotta snark, and steamy love scenes.

This was one of those books where you cringe—a lot—because the main character is just so...I dunno, out of it and out in left field...and the scenarios that come up are just bad.

This book has a really awful start that is difficult to come back from. I understand the DNF and "Charlotte is the WOOOORST" reviews on this book, honestly. The opening was almost enough to make me figuratively chuck it across the room. Ms. Lynn, I know you like to write "quirky" women, but maybe this wasn't the way to construct a sympathetic leading lady with some personality issues. Maybe don't make them aspiring rapists? Because had Charlotte found him, and he was drunk, and they had sex? She would have raped him.

So.

This story opens with Charlotte, a later 20-something who is pathetically infatuated with the Beta of the local wolf pack. Like, I'm not fully convinced she wasn't trying to collect his toe nails on the sly obsessed. It's New Year's Eve, and she's on a mission: wearing nothing but a trench coat and some FMPs, she's going to find said male and corner him, offering herself to him and (hopefully) mating him.

I just...

WHAT PLANET WERE YOU RAISED ON THAT THIS IS A REMOTELY FEASIBLE PLAN THAT SEEMED LIKE SOMETHING A SANE PERSON WOULD DO? WHO. DOES. THIS? Where is her sensible inner voice that tells her it's fun to imagine these things, but it's 110% not OK to actually do?

Oh, yeah. And she can barely see anything more than a foot in front of her face, and she refuses to wear her glasses on this little mission to force herself on the guy. What can possibly go wrong if you're going into a crowded NYE party situation where every male involved is wearing identical costumes? After a confusing interaction with a drunk male wolf she pisses off, she has a choice: go to the boat house or go to the guest house to find her mark. She takes her chances with the guest house, thinks she finds her man, and proceeds to have wild sex with him...mating him in the process. He mates her back. They both fall asleep. End scene.

This foolishness can not even be blamed on alcohol consumption. This was a totally sober effort and plan. YIKES.

Once morning rolls around, Charlotte finds she has mated someone else, and all Hades breaks loose as she tries to remove herself from the situation.

She sounds like an amazing and mature woman, yeah? Ran off like a scared bunny after connecting herself to someone for life. If this seems reasonable, she then takes over 2 weeks to try and find her Big Girl Panties to put on and just tell her folks, "Hey, guess what? I got mated."

This. Is. An. Almost. 30. Year. Old. Adult. Woman.

She's terrified to tell her parents that like most adult human beings, she had sex with someone, and in this case, ended up mated.

She cannot even bring herself to have a more than 2 minute long conversation with him. GIRL. You jump his bones every chance you get; I think you can spare a 10 minute, "So what do we do now?", talk for the guy. The guy who is literally relearning how to talk with other humans because he spends most of his time in non-verbal wolf mode.

Yes. Strangely, I kept reading this book. I'm a sucker for pain. Walt, the Wolfed Out One, was intriguing enough for me to want to know his story and keep pushing through. Once he finally is to a place that he can step up, he ends the awkward as hell avoidance loop Charlotte is keeping them stuck in and moves things ahead. From this point, the story drastically improves. It even becomes enjoyable in a low-stakes way. There are some genuinely funny moments—especially involving the idiot she was obsessed with—and there's a lot of sweetness in this tale too. Really, this is a story about a couple with a baby on the way and figuring out their housing situation and how to navigate in each other's families. If you can get past that first 25% of the book which seems to be a purgatory of sorts, the rest is smooth sailing.

I just couldn’t ....

The heroine was stumbling bumbling idiot.
Goes to a party to call her clumsy and clueless is an understatement of huge proportions, any way she stumbles her way hey the party trading dumb insults with drunken frat like wolves on her way to,I din know try and F a guy I think she’s known for years ?
I mean come on,whether a shifter can shift or not aren’t they supposed to know them at first sniff ?
Soo years later doesn’t make sense , any more than shifters getting drunk on regular alcohol or liquor.
Any way
She stumbles her way thru this seemingly huge house looking for Jamison 1/2 blind because even though she’s supposedly not “vain “ enough to wear contacts, she’s too vain to wear them with her mask or just couldn’t be bothered to find away around it. Which I really really dumb considering she seems rath r blind w/out them. And was a vain person who wore contacts for over twenty years I had no sympathy for her blatant stupidity. Why am I going off on her soo bad you ask ?
Well we spend two and a 1/2 almost three chapters on her inane inner chatter and bumbling only for her to quite foolishly take the word of a guy she’s already identified as a huge d bag, as to where she should go to find her intended victim erm mate. Only of course to stumble into the room of a complete and total stranger and mate him instead.
I will admit a couple or times her idiocy had me laughing, but I wasn’t sure if I was laughing with her or at her. I’m most definitely fine with at her.
Seriously your desperate to mate this certain guy and your not even gonna put on your glasses and make sure you even know who the heck he is ?
WTH ?!?!?!
How dumb can you be ?
First he goes down on her pressed against the door then has her against the door the pulls back and she falling on the floor and he’s th n having her again there. Huh ?
You’d think they were caught up in passion but she had NO clue who she was with or what he looked like and didn’t care. Even when he mainly/only in feral grunts and growls .
She doesn’t know who she’s with the next day even once she realizes it’s not the poor fool she’d cane stalking.
More silliness ( of the NOT FUNNY kinda) ensued as she runs from her feral mate ,who sounds like he looks like the huge red headed guy from “Game of Thrones “.
Seriously I don’t have the time or patience for some idiot who has more sass than sense who sneaks off to a party to mate some guy but isn’t smart enough to make sure she even knows who the heck she’s mating ,I mean if I’m taking a guy for a life mate be smart enough to know whose bicep, forearm and wrist your gnawing down on like a dog with a choice bone. Then run off to mommies and daddies house you still live in and sleep in your marvel Jammie’s in.
No thanks.
I started off wanting to or trying to like the h but between just how clumsy and clueless and goofy she was it was just too much and her sheer stupidity it was too much. tactless phrases like “honeyhole” and “lady boner” didn’t help .
I couldn’t make it past chapter five.
I know this was harsh and I probably should have waited to review but gods I disliked this girl. And her feral “mate” who sounded like red headed neanderthal who could only utter mine wasn’t even interesting in the least.
Never again. I like two books by Ms. Lynn and I’m stopping w/them.

Sweet and steamy older men young women romance., Loved Walt and Charlotte

Charlotte Canfrey, 28, Cher in her own mind and Lottie to almost everyone else is a werewolf. She like her parents is a dude, not able to shift. Cher has it bad for the son of the alpha. Jameson Halpert is a charming blond Adonis, who likes to stop by her daddy's garage and flirt and tease. Jameson has a thing for her daddy's vette. Cher has fallen for him. Jameson invited her to the Halpert-McGonaugh annual New Year eve party. Cher is determined to make her move on Jameson, once she can talk herself into going.
Jameson proves elusive. She gets on the wrong side of one of his friends. Lottie is directed to the guest house, where she is told Jameson is. She makes her demands, and the blue eyed snarling wolf in the cheesy Halloween wolf mask takes her up on her offer. In the heat of the moment, Cher accidentally claims him, before she realizes she's got the wrong wolf.
Walter McGonough, Walt or Red to everyone but his mama, is a 49 year old wolf run alpha wolf. The sweet young girl who invaded his space demanding he take her smelled to good to resist. When she claimed him his wolf new they had found their mate. When his idgit, nephew Jameson shows up looking for her, he scared his little dumplin' off.
Walt has to pull in his wolf side in so he can woo his mate.
Cher is surprised she is mated to her crushes half feral uncle, but wouldn't change a thing. She feels safe and content when she is with him. How does she break the news that she is mated to her parents, to a half wild wolf shifter who is closer in age to them than her.
Cher is neurotic, snarky, optionally defiant, with a kind heart. Walt is at times more wolf than man. A good man. He loves his mate. He is in awe that she claimed him. He works hard to be a worthy mate.
Then theirs Jameson, the unlikely matchmaker. A charming man child, who is to be the next alpha.
A sweet and steamy older man\wolf and younger women romance. Loved Walt and Charlotte. Can't wait for Jameson's story.

I was so excited to hear there was a new story coming. Didn't even care if it was a new series beginning, just happy we were getting a book fix!
This new world is amazing, I laughed so hard at certain parts.......Lottie just killed me. She's not perfect, she's an everyday woman with a bit more to her, she's more then she thinks.
You'll see when you get lost in her story, she takes no crap and says it like it is. When she decides to take charge of her life she has no clue the havoc she's about to cause, it was amazingly perfect for her.
I got really attached to the other characters, matter of fact I wouldn't mind some more stories in the future......not a hint, just a quiet plea for more!!
But back to the story, not your normal wolf shifter story, never are the norm with Jeanette Lynn, one reason I read her stuff, it takes me to new worlds. This pack was wacky, crazy and pretty much kept me either laughing or going oh no......plus the sexy scenes, whew.....melted me for sure!

I freaking love Jeanette Lynn books, they are filled with humour and comedy and heat and sassy 'real' women who cuss and scream and react.
I know I'm guaranteed a great read when I pick up one of her books and Seeing Red is no different. The story gripped me from page one and i was well and truly hooked.
It was a wonderful read from start to finish and I adored the 'almost' slow burn build up of the relationship between Charlotte and Walt. He was rough and animalistic from the start and she was the girl to tame the savage beastie! ♥️♥️♥️ They made my heart ache with how sweet and spicy they were and for me it was a winning combination.
If you love paranormal romance that is steamy and funny and filled with chemistry then this my friend is the book for you!

Love shifters

I just love Jeanette Lynn's books. All the fun characters that are so close to everyday people. Charlotte is a big beautiful woman who is smart, sassy, and beautifully awkward like so many of us are. She Mates the wrong guy one night. Or so at first it seems the wrong mate. Soon her and her Alpha male Walter Nick name Red find out, it's the best thing that could happen to them. There are bumps and turbulence along the way but hey as we all know nothings perfect. But the struggles are forgotten when you finally find your forever.

4.5 stars of goodness

In general I love pretty much everything this author has written, so I would suggest trying any other books. This book was a 4.5 stars for me. Overall it was a well written book with plenty of cuteness, hilarity, ups & downs, hot moments as well as some unique bits and traits throughout the paranormal aspect. This was just a good book with plenty to sink your teeth into, would recommend.

Great entertainment!
A case of mistaken identity leads Charlotte to the love of her life! After boldly making a move to capture the man of her dreams, imagine her surprise when she’s found someone else entirely.
Her struggles with the reality of the situation are epically entertaining. The Halpert-McGonaugh pack has some fascinating characters in it - I’m eager to learn more...

I loved the humor in this book. There wasn't any angst or drama, but definitely had me laughing and snickering loudly. I loved Rex and Jameson.

Honestly forgot I was reading a Jeanette lynn book. It just didn't feel the same as her other books to me, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Probably my least favorite so far though.
