I liked this book a lot better than the last one. No annoying actresses, just the characters we've come to know and love. Sam is dealing with the start of a new school year, which is hard enough, but then her best friend gets ribs broken by a bull and ends up in the hospital. Sam is worried about her and also worried about not having other close friends at school, especially if Jen's dad decides to homeschool her again. Then she and her stepmother are also looking at a mustang as a possible new horse for her dad, but the horse may be more work than her dad wants to add to his busy schedule.

So many great character dynamics. We learn more about a cowboy at the ranch who struggles with stuttering, but writes simple but beautiful poetry. I loved how Sam was able to honor his work and give it an audience. While I was and still am worried about Jen, I was glad to see Sam take Brianna's advice and decide to stretch herself at school a bit more, and even be kind to someone who has been perpetually mean to her. It was also interesting to see her dad connecting to a new horse. I'm curious to see how that relationship works out over the last books in the series.

Looking forward to the next book! Only 4 more left!!!

Content Advisory:
Rachel Slocum says something catty to Sam about her clothes.

Sam's best friend Jen gets rammed by a bull (it has no horns) and ends up with broken ribs and a hospital stay. The scene where this happens may be mildly emotionally intense for very young readers because Sam is very scared for her friend and there are concerns about a rib puncturing a lung. No lungs get punctured, but it's still a serious injury and Jen is still in the hospital by the end of the book.

What is it with authors making up weird colors for the horses they write about? The Spanish Mustang given to Sam's Dad is described as a "blue roan pinto" -- but then is described as being mostly white, with small patches of blue roan.

Well, that's gotta be a one in a trillion horse, because when blue roans go pinto, they are mostly blue roan with small patches of white.

And what the FUCK is the Phantom doing wandering around all over the place without his herd? Challenging rogue bulls, no less. In an area with quicksand.

Has Terri Farley forgotten EVERY SINGLE THING about Mustang behavior? Yes. Yes, she has.

The bits about a stuttering cowboy and the crazy bull were nice, but the rest of this devolved into absolute lunacy.

This was one of my favorite series from my childhood books 11-24 I did not have the pleasure of reading them during childhood I am reading them now.

Summer is ending, and Samantha's dad's birthday is right around the corner. When her stepmom picks out a mustang for his present, Sam thinks it's a perfect idea. But will her dad agree?

When my sister was younger, she used to keep trying to draw the horse on the front cover of this book. Blue is, admittedly, very pretty, and I like that Wyatt finally has his own horse again.

I completely forgot that Jen got so badly hurt, and so traumatically too! That sequence was harrowing to read.
