I feel hesitant about writing a strongly critical review of a Bullet Journal guide, but as an enthusiast of bullet journaling, I feel obligated to point out a few issues for the benefit of beginners who might read reviews of the book.
I approached the book hoping to find new ideas or different viewpoints to incorporate into my practice. Although I did note a few tips, I found myself writing more critiques. The guide's format is unconventional. For someone just starting with Bullet Journaling, I would expect an introduction to what it is, why people engage in it, its benefits, etc. These topics are indeed covered, but not at the beginning. Instead, the guide jumps straight into giving tips and only later addresses the basics. When it does, the discussion lacks enthusiasm and depth and is not very informative. Furthermore, the guide unnecessarily repeats information.
Bullet Journaling has few rules, but the first three pieces of advice I'd offer are 1. Understand your goals with Bullet Journaling, 2. Start simple and gradually add complexity as you establish the habit and continually evaluate, and 3. If the format does not work, itirate!
The book quickly dives into complexity. For example, it encourages adding an index and later repeats this as an "essential step." I've never used an index in my journals because I keep my layouts simple and design them month by month. This advice seems premature for beginners, who may not yet understand their commitment level or what they're doing. Practice first; then, if it suits you, consider an index. An index implies a level of complexity and preplanning that may not be appropriate for newcomers who are still exploring the format.
Moreover, I want to reassure those who might not consider themselves creative that bullet journaling is primarily a productivity and motivation methodology, or a personal diary, not just a creative outlet. If you prefer a simple tracker without colors, that's perfectly valid
